KENSINGTON SHELTER FOR HOMELESS FAMILIES NEEDS DONATIONS OF CLOTHING, TOILETRIES, AND TOYS

Donated clothing, toiletries, and toys are being collected for the families in Kensington's family homeless shelter. Only the items that are listed below are needed. Nothing else can be accepted now because of the limited amount of storage space.

The women and children need clothing for spring and summer in the sizes listed below. The clothing has to be in excellent condition: no stains, pilling, holes, or other signs of wear and tear.

Toiletries have to be in unopened packages. Items in travel sizes are welcome.

Requests for donated items remain in effect until Catherine and Tracy send out an updated e-mail. They are neighborhood residents who have volunteered to serve as liaisons between the shelter and the Kensington and Windsor Terrace neighborhoods.

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING SUSPENDED FOR SNOW REMOVAL

Yes, it's true: after the past few days of milder weather, we're predicted to get 3 to 5 inches of snow between 10 p.m. tonight and 2 p.m. tomorrow. 

Soooo, alternate side of the street parking regulations--normally in effect on weekdays and Saturdays so that streets can be cleaned--will be suspended on Friday, March 10th, to facilitate snow removal.

Parking meter regulations and all other parking regulations will be in effect.

Garbage and recycling collection have been suspended.

GALA PARTY AND AUCTION TO BENEFIT P.S. 230, A LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

SIP into Spring, an annual party and silent auction for P.S. 230 at Hill Country Barbecue, supports the school's arts programs, facility enhancements, and special assemblies.

A ticket to SIP Into Spring entitles you to barbecue, drinks, soda, and live music.

You'll also have the opportunity to bid on items like Disney Park Hopper passes, certificates to local restaurants, including The Adirondack and Hamilton's, and certificates to other local businesses, including Sun Dojo and Blitz Dojo.

SHOWING UP FOR RACIAL JUSTICE, KENSINGTON CHAPTER MEETING (FREE)

Showing Up for Racial Justice Meeting
Thursday, March 9th, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Kensington chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ Kensington) will host a meeting at Brooklyn Commune on Thursday, March 9th, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

SURJ is a national network of groups and individuals that organizes white people to work for racial justice by using the tools of community organizing, mobilizing, and education. SURJ provides white people with an opportunity to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice.

Space at the meeting site is limited; RSVP for the meeting so that the organizers can figure out if they will have room to accommodate everyone.

If you can't make it to the meeting, you can still indicate your interest in

• being trained to do rapid response work when there is ICE activity in Kensington,
• helping with outreach to neighborhood businesses and faith institutions to be part of the Kensington Hate Free Zone,
• hosting small discussion groups in your home on racial justice and self-education, and/or
• being part of a steering committee for SURJ Kensington to help coordinate projects, meetings, and communication.

Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR) will host a Silent Auction at Stand Up For Pits (SUFP) with Rebecca Corry. The show will take place on Sunday, April 30th, at Manhattan's Gotham Comedy Club.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY SPEAK-OUT IN KENSINGTON PLAZA

International Women's Day Speak-out

Wednesday, March 8th, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

International Women's Day, observed annually on March 8th, is a global day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Women and their allies will act together on International Women's Day for equity, justice, and the human rights of women through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity--the International Women's Strike.

The strike is an international day of action that has been planned and organized by women in more than thirty countries. In the United States, the organizers of January's Women's March on Washington have named this one-day economic strike A Day Without A Woman.

On that day, women are encouraged to take the day off from paid and unpaid labor, if they can. 

On that day, everyone is encouraged to avoid shopping in stores and online, except to patronize small, woman-owned, and minority-owned businesses.

On that day, everyone can wear red to show solidarity with the strike. 

On that day, everyone would protest and demonstrate. In Kensington, Occupy Kensington is hosting a speak-out in Kensington Plaza from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. All are welcome.

                             Introduction to Aikido for Youth
                      Tuesday, March 7th, 5:20 p.m. to 6:20 p.m.

To kick off its new aikido program for ages 7 to 12, Brooklyn Aikido Center is offering an opportunity for youth and their parents or guardians to learn more about aikido and about the Brooklyn Aikido Center dojo and program.

On Tuesday, March 7th, from 5:20 p.m. to 6:20 p.m., the center will offer a trial/demo class for ages 7-12 at a cost of $10 per child.

Following the introduction to aikido and the Brooklyn Aikido Center program, the children will participate in a shortened class experience that consists of warmups, basic falls, and a technique or two. The class will conclude with a brief adult demonstration.

SAFE DISPOSAL EVENT: GET RID OF HARMFUL HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS AND ELECTRONICS SAFELY

Safe Disposal Event

Sunday, April 2nd, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The NYC Department of Sanitation holds a SAFE Disposal Event (Solvents, Automotive, Flammable, Electronics) in each borough to provide residents with a one-stop method to dispose of harmful household products safely.

Materials accepted at the event include common household products, such as auto fluids, motor oil, automotive batteries, batteries, electronics, mobile phones, compact fluorescent bulbs, thermostats, thermometers, strong cleaners, medications, medical items (including syringes and lancets), paint, and more.

Appliances, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, and tires are not accepted.

The event in Brooklyn will take place on Sunday, April 2nd, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be at Prospect Park Park Circle, at the corner of Parkside Avenue and Prospect Park Southwest. Cars can enter along Parkside Avenue from Ocean Avenue and Lincoln Road.

The event will be held rain or shine. Because so many people participate in these events, be prepared to be on line for a while.

Only New York City residential waste is accepted at SAFE Disposal Events. No commercial vehicles will be allowed. Residents must provide proof of their New York City residency, such as a New York State driver’s license or utility bill.

MONETARY REWARDS FOR YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY BRANCH

New York City residents can nominate their local library branch (or a branch that's near work, school, or anywhere else in the city) for the 4th Annual NYC Neighborhood Library Awards.

Being nominated gives a library branch a chance to be a grand prize winner of $20,000 or a finalist who wins $10,000.  Five grand prize winners and five finalists will be chosen.

Nominate only one library, and nominate it only once. Nominations can be made until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, March 13th.

Read about the Awards Guidelines and Selection Process before you fill out a nomination form.

Nominations will be accepted in these ten languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, Polish, Spanish, and Urdu. Click the link that will take you to the nomination form in your preferred language.

The library branch that you nominate has to be within any of these systems: Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Library, or New York Public Library (which operates in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island).

When you fill out the nomination form, explain why that library branch should win. Give examples of how it helped you or changed you or the effect you saw it have on other users. Winning isn't based on the number of votes; it's based on the quality of the nominations.

The winners will be selected and announced in June.

People who don't live in New York City but use the city's libraries can also submit a nomination.

Community Board 12's monthly general meeting will be held tonight, Tuesday, February 28th, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.

Do you have any concerns, questions, solutions, needs, or problems that you'd like the community board to address? Arrive at the meeting before 7:00 p.m. so that you can sign up to speak during the public comment period at the beginning of the meeting. You'll have three minutes to present your topic.

General meetings of Community Board 12 are normally held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, from September through June, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Amico Senior Center.

Every neighborhood in New York City is represented by an all-volunteer community board, which serves as the neighborhood's liaison to city agencies. Board members are appointed by the neighborhood's city councilperson and the borough president.

The goal of a community board is to help resolve issues involving pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, housing, land use and zoning, outdoor lighting, potholes, sanitation, libraries, crime, police presence, social services, rodents, trash collection, public litter baskets, street and sidewalk conditions, etc.

CHILDREN'S ART & BANGLA RECITATION CONTEST (FREE)

Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts Inc. and M&M Academic Support Tutoring Center will jointly present Children's Art & Bangla Recitation Contest on Saturday, March 4th, at 2:00 p.m.

La Leche League Meeting
