Q&A with the Sanitation Department

Thursday, June 26th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Sanitation Department representative Bruno Iciano will be the guest speaker at the Albemarle Neighborhood Association's monthly community meeting, the last one until September. Mr. Iciano is known for coming up with answers to people's tough questions as well as knowing which city agency or department to turn to for action.

Attend the meeting so you can tell Mr. Iciano about our neighborhood's problems, such as

• public litter baskets getting filled beyond their capacity quickly,
• the Sanitation Department removing needed public litter baskets,
• residents illegally throwing their household garbage in the baskets,
• businesses illegally putting their garbage in the baskets,
• businesses failing to sweep the sidewalk or street in front of their building, as required by law, and
• graffiti defacing public and private buildings and street furniture, in violation of the law.

The meeting will be held outdoors, in the street, on Albemarle Road, between E. 4th and E. 5th streets. If rain is a possibility for the evening, the meeting will be in the lobby of 415 Albemarle Road instead. Bring a chair with you if you'll want to sit down.

Foodtown and ANA will provide light refreshments for free.

Danielle Selig, missing

The NYPD has issued a Silver Alert for the disappearance of Danielle Selig. She is white, 44 years old, from Manhattan Avenue and Greenpoint Avenue in Brooklyn, has Down syndrome, and can't speak.

Ms. Selig is 4'6" tall, weights 90 lbs., and has red hair and green eyes. She was last seen in a doctor's office at about noon yesterday (Saturday, June 21st) at Gallatin Place and Fulton Street in Brooklyn. She was dressed in a pink shirt, pink pants, and white gloves.

Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety at Ocean Parkway Intersections

Monday, June 23rd, 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday will be the one-year anniversary of the death of pedestrian Ngozi Agbim at the intersection of Ocean Parkway and Church Avenue. Dialog, proposals, and actions to make walking and bike-riding safer on Ocean Parkway continue as the long-standing dangers of venturing onto Ocean Parkway remain very much on area residents' minds.

At a public meeting tomorrow night, Assemblymember Jim Brennan and representatives from the New York State Department of Transportation will present a plan that's intended to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety at Ocean Parkway intersections from Avenue C to Avenue I.

Methods that would be used to help reduce accidents include installing pedestrian refuge islands, upgrading signage, adjusting signal timing, and more.

Neighbors, you're needed at this meeting to evaluate the merits of the plan, comment on it, and suggest alternatives.

Mario Caggiano

Mario Caggiano is an enthusiast with a zest for excellence in any endeavor that he undertakes.

As a proud veteran of 15 years in the NYC school system, he has been a coach and leader to thousands of students. As a Physical Education, Biology, and Health teacher, he has made a career out of motivating students to achieve.

He also counsels children with his New York state certificate in substance abuse and alcoholism counseling certificate (CASAC-T). Presently, Mario is back at Coldwell Banker where he and his wife Michelle work together as "Team Caggiano," recently winning "Agent of the Year" with seven-figure sales revenues.

As a proud Italian-American, Mario likes to spend his time with his wife Michelle and their beautiful children Valentina and Antonio.

Alyssa Ciccarella

Mika Dashman 

Mika is an attorney and a mediator who has lived in New York City for 17 years and in Windsor Terrace for the past 4. She was raised in the Hudson Valley where she developed her lifelong love affair with fresh produce. She has been a member of the Kensington/Windsor Terrace CSA and regularly shops at the farmer’s markets on 11th Avenue and at Grand Army Plaza.

She has enjoyed being involved in the development of the co-op from early on, and is looking forward to helping to bring it to fruition.

Marie-Alyce Devieux 

Marie-Alyce is a proud Brooklyn native who has lived with her family in Windsor Terrace for the last seven years. She is currently a member of the 4th Street Community Garden and board member of the Smart Kids R Us Group Family Day Care.

She is a past board member and Trustee for the Open Meadows Foundation.

Rosanna Gowell

Rosanna Gowell has lived in Windsor Terrace for over 35 years with her husband, daughters, and grandchildren. She is currently a member of the Park Slope Food co-op. She has spent her professional career as a social worker and continues to be involved with the NYC Dept of Education.

Mark Horberg

Mark's interest in forming a community food coop started at the first public meeting with Walgreens. He and his wife Risa have lived in Windsor Terrace for several years. He has a background in the environmental field and is currently a manager at the NYC Department of Health.

David Mann

David has lived on Windsor Place since 1985, and has belonged to Park Slope Food Co-op since 1999. Following his retirement from healthcare, he has tried to find lessons for WTFC from other local food co-ops.

Terry Moogan 

Terry has been a member of the Park Slope Food Coop since 1982 and would love to see a coop open closer to her home in Windsor Terrace. She has spent her professional life in various capacities in publishing.

Jack O'Connell

Jack and his wife Gretchen have raised two children and lived in their Seeley Street home since 1985. He has been involved in the endeavor to create a Food Cooperative in Windsor Terrace since its beginning. He presently serves on the Board of Trustees of North Shore LIJ Health System, Media in the Public Interest and most recently as Chairman of the Empire Justice Center of New York.

Christine Petro 

Christine has been a member of the Park Slope Food Co-op since 2011 and has lived in Windsor Terrace for 10 years. She is committed to creating better access to affordable, regionally-sourced food in Windsor Terrace and a community-owned and operated enterprise.

She works as the Director of Education Programs at the Gowanus Canal Conservancy and is a member of Community Board 7.

Granville Shaw, missing

Granville Shaw has disappeared from Lenox Road and Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn. He is black, 75 years old, and 5'5" tall, weighs 150 pounds, and has salt-and-pepper hair.

When he was last seen, he was wearing a khaki shirt, blue jeans, brown shoes, a gold wristwatch, and glasses.

Mr. Shaw has dementia, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Spring Fling

At this year's Spring Fling, kids will delight in

• crafts, and
• games (pin drop, bean bag toss, ring toss).

Kids: dunk the principal, teachers, and dads without getting in trouble!

Everyone is invited--for a fee of $5 per pie--to enter as many pies in the pie-baking contest as they want to, in hopes of winning a trophy. At least one of each person's pies has to have a crust, and pies from stores can't be entered. Turn in your pies by 5:00.

The pie judges will be David Massoni of Talde, Georgia Read of Hamilton's, and Olivier Dessyn of Mille-Feuille Bakery.

At 6:00, the winner will be announced.

Over at the spin art station, everyone can make their own t-shirt spin art.

Local food vendors Dub Pies, Krupa Grocery, Piccoli, and Hamilton's will be selling their wares.

"STOMP" FOR THE ANIMALS: TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR A FUND RAISER FOR SEAN CASEY ANIMAL RESCUE

At this upcoming fund raiser for Sean Casey Animal Rescue, select pieces from the highly-entertaining "Stomp" will be performed. That will be followed by a showing of "Rescue! Brooklyn," the well-received documentary film about the wonderful shelter that has saved the lives of so many animals and showered them with so much love.

The evening's events will take place on Monday, June 16th, at the Brooklyn Music School, 126 St. Felix Street. The school is located right behind Atlantic Terminal.

To help stock the food pantry of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, the church's Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will collect non-perishable food tomorrow in front of Foodtown, 382 McDonald Avenue at Albemarle Road. The food's recipients are our neighbors who are in need.

Non-perishable foods have a long shelf life, with expiration dates far into the future. Some of the foods are canned tuna fish, canned beans, dried beans, canned fruit, dried fruit, juice, peanut butter, jelly, crackers, nuts, canned vegetables, boxes of rice, boxes of past, and more. The healthier, the better--low salt, low sugar, whole grains....

The church's food pantry needs these as well as personal care items every day of the year.

LGBT-THEMED TROLLEY TOUR ON JUNE 14TH

"Gay Green-Wood" Trolley Tour
