"The Power of Community:
How Cuba Survived Peak Oil"
Monday, January 20th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Cuba made itself essentially independent of fossil fuel out of necessity. It would be best for a nation to do that before a crisis arises, but this crisis wasn't predictable and wasn't of their own making: the Soviet Union of Socialist Republics collapsed in 1991 and dragged Cuba's economy down with it.
Cuba's oil imports were slashed by more than fifty percent and food imports by eighty percent. Slowly, Cuba and Cubans recovered from the devastating hardship by emphasizing sustainable growth.
"Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil," a fifty-three-minute video released in 2006, is the opening featured film in the series "FOOD MATTERS," a monthly film and discussion series hosted by Prospect Farm.
This free event will be hosted by Prospect Farm and Brooklyn Commune and take place at Brooklyn Commune.
