A DOG RUN IS ONE OF THE MORE POPULAR IDEAS

Yes to considering these ideas: fitness, dog runs, playground improvements, park improvements, trees/greening, and lighting.

No to considering these: pools, bathrooms, installing WiFi equipment at parks, renovating handball courts, or creating more bocce courts.

Those decisions were reached by the District 39 Participatory Budgeting Initiative's Parks and Recreation Committee. Read more about the committee meeting and discussion on Brad Lander's blog.

YORKIE LOOKING FOR A HOME

Sean Casey Animal Rescue's Adoptable Dog of the Day is Bear, a 10-year-old purebred Yorkshire Terrier who was found in Brooklyn and brought to Sean Casey's no-kill shelter. Bear's poor teeth were in very bad condition, and his coat was matted and dirty. SCAR's vets did a full dental on Bear, removing all of his teeth. They also shaved his matted coat.

Because this sweet little guy has no teeth, he can only eat canned food. Bear is a very loving fellow who wants a loving home to live in.

Bear is neutered, dewormed, treated to prevent fleas and ticks, and is up-to-date with vaccinations. His adoption fee is $200.00, and he'll get one free exam at SCAR's vet's office, one free month of pet health insurance, and a microchip.

LETTER SENT TO IHM SCHOOL AND HOLY NAME SCHOOL PARENTS

This letter was sent home to parents of students at Immaculate Heart of Mary School and Holy Name of Jesus School last night.
Dear [parent's name],

As you are aware, for the past three years our diocese has been fully engaged in the process of strategic planning with Preserving the Vision (Schools) and Christ Jesus, Our Hope (Parishes).Through Preserving the Vision, our cluster parishes, (Holy Name of Jesus, Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Saviour), have been engaged in a regional discussion regarding the future of Catholic education in the area and the need to be proactive in our planning instead of reactive. We (four pastors and principals) have been meeting with Bishop Frank Caggiano, Vicar General, and Dr. Thomas Chadzutko, Superintendent of Catholic School Support Services, since last spring to actively explore this possibility for our area, keeping in mind that all parish elementary school will be academies by 2017.

The diocese has done extensive exploration and studies regarding the changing demographics in our area as well as researched the projections for our neighborhoods. Through these studies it became evident that while we would have a regional Catholic elementary academy in our cluster there would most likely not be a need for the academy to be established at four sites. Currently, approximately 1,100 students attend the four schools in our cluster. The goal of Preserving the Vision is to ensure that Catholic education will be present in the area for years to come.

The parishes throughout our diocese have provided "Self Studies" to the Planning Commission for Christ Jesus, Our Hope. Currently, Immaculate Heart of Mary is engaged in Phase III of this process and has been asked to provide a strategic action plan to the Commission by March 2012.Bishop DiMarzio has asked the parish to address its financial debt to the diocese, evangelization goals, and to work towards a regional Catholic elementary academy in the area. The plan must include a realistic and attainable payment plan addressing the debt.Undoubtedly, this has pushed the timeline that we might have considered previously for establishing a regional Catholic Academy.

In an effort of collaboration and being proactive rather than reactive, in consultation with our parish staffs, trustees, pastoral planning councils and finance councils, we have agreed that both Holy Name of Jesus School and Immaculate Heart of Mary School will close in June 2012.A new Catholic academy under the patronage of St. Joseph the Worker will open in September 2012 at the Holy Name of Jesus site. St. Joseph diligently cared for both Mary and Jesus throughout his life.Perhaps even more importantly he had dreams which enabled him to see beyond what laid before him-he saw possibility. It is out hope that we too can see possibility and dare to dream of what can be for the children of our area.

Immaculate Heart of Mary School will be rented and the rental income generated will assist in the payment plan for the parish's diocesan debt and under the diocesan structure of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Trust, help support St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy. This support will help to secure financial stability as well as allow for creative ways to address effective marketing, and recruitment and retention of students as we continue the mission to provide excellence in Catholic Education with a distinct academic program that will meet the needs of students.

We ask that you hold both school and parish communities in your prayers in the months ahead as we work towards establishing St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy.

GOODBYE ALSO TO HOLY NAME SCHOOL

Not only won't there be an Immaculate Heart of Mary School after the 2011-2012 school year ends, there also won't be a Holy Name of Jesus School. The two schools will merge to form St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy, which will open where Holy Name School is for the 2012-2013 school year.

The New York City Department of Education may be interested in renting the IHM School building for a public school or a charter school.

GROPER ON S TRAIN ARRESTED

Police arrested Stuart Cato, 39, of Queens on Friday for allegedly groping a woman at about 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday as she was leaving the S train's Brooklyn Botanic Garden station. She had gotten on the train at Franklin Street, the previous stop.

The 24-year-old victim said Cato was making obscene gestures toward her on the train, so she photographed him with her cell phone. When she got off the train and was walking up the steps to go outside, Cato also got off the train and followed her. He grabbed her buttocks from behind, she slapped him in the face, and he ran away.

Cato is charged with forcible touching, harassment, and sexual abuse.

GOODBYE, IHM SCHOOL

It's a shock to realize that Immaculate Heart of Mary School--one of the anchors of the neighborhood--will close in only six months. The current eighth grade class will be the last one to graduate.

The school announced at a meeting with parents last night that after ninety-five years of serving the Catholic community, it will close in June 2012.

Ginger Peters tells us that
"The original school opened in 1917 on the site of the current school. That building was demolished following the end of the 1966-67 school year. For the 1967-68 school year, while the new school was being built, IHM students were bused to PS 10, where IHM classes were held. The current school building opened in September, 1968."

Starting in September 2012, children who would have attended IHM will instead attend St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy. It will open in the building now housing Holy Name of Jesus School at 241 Prospect Park West by Windsor Place.

In February 2009, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn announced the proposed merger of IHM and Holy Name, forming one school with a single campus to be located on Prospect Park West. The Diocese might rent the IHM building to generate income for the parish.
