The Brooklyn Paper now posts a full copy of its print edition online on Thursdays. The print edition is numbered page 1, page 2, page 3, page 4, etc. On Fridays, the print edition is dropped off at about 250 street locations, and on Saturdays, it's delivered to homes in some Brownstone Brooklyn neighborhoods.

SENATOR ERIC ADAMS' PHONE PROBLEM

As of 5:00 p.m. yesterday, Wednesday, August 10th, New York State Senator Eric Adams has been having problems with phone service at his district office. The Verizon strike is preventing the problem from being resolved in a timely manner.

PARKING RULES FOR MONDAY

Alternate side of the street parking regulations normally in effect to facilitate street cleaning will be suspended for Monday, August 15th,  for the Feast of the Assumption. All other regulations, including parking meters, will remain in effect.

KILLER (ALLEGED) OF LEIBY KLETZKY DIAGNOSED

 

The man charged with the July kidnapping of eight-year-old Leiby Kletzky from Borough Park and Leiby's subsequent murder and dismemberment in the man's Kensington home was evaluated by psychiatrists last week by court order and diagnosed as having "adjustment disorder and a personality disorder with schizoid features." At that time, he was deemed mentally competent to stand trial.

He was transferred from Bellevue Hospital to Rikers Island on Monday. His next court date is October 14th.

Picnic lunch (organic hot dog and veggie burger, our own spring greens salad, Long Island Potato chips and natural soda or juice) will be available for $10, bring a bag lunch if you prefer; we'll also have sandwiches, snacks and sodas for sale at our Organic Farm Market. FELONIES IN KENSINGTON FROM AUGUST 1ST THROUGH AUGUST 7TH THAT WERE REPORTED TO THE 66TH PRECINCT

There was one crime for last week, a robbery in front of 402 Cortelyou Road, between E. 4th and E. 5th streets, on August 4th, at 9:00 a.m. A twenty-six-year-old female had her cellphone taken from her hand by an unknown man in his twenties. There were no injuries. No arrest was made.

This report was sent to us by the 66th Precinct's PIMS unit.

THREE WEEKENDS OF SERVICE CHANGES ON THE G TRAIN

On three weekends--August 27th to 29th, September 24th to 26th, and October 1st to 3rd--New York City Transit will operate shuttle buses along portions of the G subway line because of track maintenance work.

Alternate service plans are:

• August 27th-29th: G service suspended between Hoyt-Schermerhorn and Court Square F station, replaced by shuttle buses
• September 24th-26th: G service suspended between Bedford-Nostrand Aves. and Court Square F station, replaced by shuttle buses
• October 1st-3rd: same as September 24th-26th weekend

72ND PRECINCT POLICE BLOTTER: THE SHORT VERSION

The Brooklyn Paper is now publishing its stylized version of a police blotter for the 72nd Precinct. The precinct covers the neighborhoods of Sunset Park, Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights, and Stable Brooklyn.

This week's blotter reports damage to parked cars and the theft of some items from a car. It doesn't report any incidents of murder, rape, robbery, felonious assault, burglary, grand larceny, or grand larceny assault. The absence of these crimes would be wonderful news, if true. However, since we've never seen a week in which one or more of these crimes isn't committed, we called the precinct to ask if the blotter is complete. It isn't.

The CompStat report of crime statistics for the precinct is posted on Mondays, a week after the closing date of the report. The report currently posted is for the week of July 18th through July 24th, a week prior to the week covered by The Brooklyn Paper.

LEIBY KLETZKY'S ALLEGED KILLER PLEADS NOT GUILTY

Psychiatric evaluation has determined that Leiby Kletzky's alleged killer is mentally competent to stand trial, the Brooklyn district attorney’s office announced today. The alleged killer pleaded not guilty in Brooklyn Supreme Court. Being found mentally competent to stand trial means that he

"understands the nature and charges against him, that is he able to understand he's being criminally prosecuted, he knows what those charges are, and is able to participate in his own defense. It is not a rendering on sanity or insanity, it is only on competency," said Defense Attorney Jennifer McCann.

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes said "there are absolutely no circumstances which would lead me to accept a plea bargain." [International Business Times]

The next court appearance will be on October 14th.

Also today, Congressperson Jerrold presented Borough Park Shomrim with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for its role in organizing the search to find Leiby before it was discovered that he had been killed.

PESTICIDE SPRAYING POSTPONED

Due to inclement weather, the Department of Health has postponed spraying for mosquitoes in the following Brooklyn zip codes: 11215, 11218, 11219, 11225, 11226, 11232, and 11238. The alternative spray date for these areas will be tomorrow, 8/4/11, between 8:15 PM and 6:00 AM. DOHMH recommends that whenever possible, stay indoors during spraying. PESTICIDE WILL BE SPRAYED IN THE STREETS TOMORROW

will be sprayed tomorrow night

through Thursday morning.

The Health Department will spray pesticide from trucks tomorrow (Wednesday, August 3rd) in Brooklyn, starting at 8:15 p.m. and finishing on Thursday morning at 6:00 a.m. The aim is to reduce adult mosquito populations and help reduce the risk of West Nile virus. If it's raining or there are high winds, spraying will continue on the next evening that the weather permits.

The spray is "a very low concentration of Anvil®, 10 + 10, a synthetic pesticide."

The Health Department recommends that, whenever possible, people stay indoors during spraying. 

The area to be sprayed is bounded by

• Washington Avenue to the East,
• 20th Street, Prospect Park West, and Eastern Parkway to the North,
• 45th Street and 5th Avenue to the West, and
• Ft Hamilton Parkway and Caton Avenue to the South.

Ramadan Mubarak (Blessings of Ramadan) to our Muslim readers and friends!

During the month of Ramadan, the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It was sent down from heaven as guidance for men and as a direction and a means to Salvation. 

Ramadan began this year on August 1st and will end on August 29th. It is observed through fasting, worship, reading of the Quran (the holy book), spiritual reflection, generosity to others, and strengthening of family and community. Every day from dawn to sundown during Ramadan, Muslims who are past the age of puberty abstain from food and liquids.

Ramadan is the most sacred of Muslim holidays.
