Help clean up Kensington! Join our office, the District 39 Cleanup Crew, The Kensington Stewards, Clean Up Kensington, and your neighbors on Sunday, August 30, from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM for a community clean-up of the Ocean Parkway Pedestrian Malls, where litter and illegal dumping remain persistent challenges.

Together, we can help keep our neighborhood clean, welcoming, and beautiful. Supplies—including gloves, garbage pickers, and bags—will be provided.

Freedom Fridays is a weekly community grassroots action at the intersection of Church Avenue and Ocean Parkway in Kensington. The goal of Freedom Fridays is to keep America free and share hope. 

 

This week's Freedom Fridays action is in support of the Hands Off NYC Community Weekend of Action, the goal being to protect neighbors by resisting federal and military intervention (the National Guard and ICE/U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) in New York City's neighborhoods.

From Freedom Fridays:

Join us to pass out whistle kits, zines, hold signs, dance in the crosswalk and show the drivers and passersby on Ocean Parkway that resistance is normal, accessible, and joyful!

Meet up with other community residents on the northeast corner at 5:30 p.m. and stay as long as you like. Bring signs, if you have any or can make any.

Runners will follow this route: 

south on Washington Avenue, right onto Empire Boulevard, right onto Flatbush Avenue, around Grand Army Plaza, south on Flatbush Avenue

 

right onto Ocean Avenue, right onto Parkside Avenue, into Prospect Park at Machate Circle, onto East Drive, a counter-clockwise loop of Prospect Park exiting at Machate Circle

 

south down Fort Hamilton Parkway onto Ocean Parkway, south towards Coney Island, right as Ocean Parkway turns into Surf Avenue, left on W 10th Street towards the Coney Island Boardwalk, up a sidewalk ramp onto the boardwalk, and right towards the finish before W 15th Street.

NYCRUNS Brooklyn Marathon & Half Marathon

Sunday, April 24th

The NYCRUNS Brooklyn Marathon & Half Marathon will start in North Brooklyn at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 24th.

 

On the day of the race, street closures will be in effect as early as 1:00 a.m. and as late as 2:00 p.m. The day before the race, parking restrictions will be in effect. Details about street closures and parking restrictions haven't been announced yet. Information about them will be posted on the race's website at https://www.thebrooklynmarathon.com/race-day.

The half marathon ends at Prospect Park, but the marathon continues onto Ocean Avenue, Parkside Avenue, and southbound Ocean Parkway to Avenue P. There, it'll turn around and head northbound on Ocean Parkway to Prospect Park.

COMMUNITY CLEANUP OF OCEAN PARKWAY

Join local residents in cleaning up the block of Ocean Parkway between Ditmas Avenue and Cortelyou Road on Saturday, July 31st, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Meet at the northwest corner of Ocean Parkway and Ditmas Avenue.

 

In case of rain, the clean-up will be canceled; a cancellation notice will be posted on The Kensington Stewards Facebook page.

COMMUNITY CLEANUP IN JUNE ON OCEAN PARKWAY

 

 

The May 30th community cleanup event on Ocean Parkway has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 6th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., because tomorrow's weather forecast is for rain, rain, and more rain. 

 

Meet at the northwest corner of 18th Avenue and Ocean Parkway at 10:00 a.m. and help clean up the west side of the Ocean Parkway mall from 18th Avenue to Ditmas Avenue.

COMMUNITY LITTER CLEANUP ON OCEAN PARKWAY

Neighbor Pete Gomori is organizing another litter cleanup on Ocean Parkway.

The weather is getting nicer. How about a cleanup event on Saturday, April 24th, from Ditmas Avenue to 18th Avenue, on the east side Ocean Parkway mall.

Meet at the southeast corner of Ditmas Avenue and Ocean Parkway at 10:00 a.m. Tools, gloves, and garbage bags will be provided.

The cleanup will continue until 11:30 a.m.

OCEAN PARKWAY CLEANUP: COMMUNITY RESIDENTS NEEDED

 

Ocean Parkway Community Cleanup

Sunday, October 25th, 10:00 a.m. to noon

The next community cleanup of beautiful, historic Ocean Parkway will take place on Sunday, October 25th, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

 

The Kensington Stewards (TKS) and the Albemarle Neighborhood Association (ANA) are co-sponsoring the cleanup and will provide the supplies.

After meeting on the east side of the intersection of Ocean Parkway and Beverley Road (the side of Ocean Parkway that's closer to E. 7th Street) at 10:00 a.m., volunteers will clean up the east side of Ocean Parkway between Beverley Road and Avenue C. Join them at any time between 10:00 a.m. and noon.

 

Wear a mask, and be mindful of social distancing.

LITTER CLEANUP ON OCEAN PARKWAY: NEIGHBORS WORKING TOGETHER

Ocean Parkway Street Cleanup

Wednesday, July 15th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Ocean Parkway is a beloved and historic boulevard, used for living, strolling, jogging, sitting, playing chess and checkers, driving, and bicycling. The nation's first designated bicycle lane is on Ocean Parkway.

Ocean Parkway will be made even more beautiful and appealing tonight through community members working together to pick up litter.

Neighborhood residents will join together from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to pick up and bag the litter on the east (odd-numbered) side of Ocean Parkway, between Church Avenue and Beverley Road. 

Meet on Wednesday, July 15th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Ocean Parkway-Church Avenue intersection.

Wear a mask to protect others and gloves to protect yourself. Bring trash bags and, if you have them, brooms, rakes, and a reacher/grabber that looks something like this.

DRIVING ALERT FOR THE BROOKLYN MARATHON

                    NYCRUNS Brooklyn Marathon & Half Marathon
                             Saturday, October 19th, 7:00 a.m.

Parking, driving, bicycling, and walking problems always accompany the NYCRUNS Brooklyn Marathon & Half Marathon. 

This year, the races, organized by New York City Runs, Inc., will be on Saturday, October 19th, starting at 7:00 a.m. Half marathoners will have 4 hours and 30 minutes to complete their race, and marathoners will have 6 hours and 35 minutes for theirs.

The race kicks off at the Brooklyn Museum on Eastern Parkway. It'll travel through Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Windsor Terrace, and Kensington, and it'll finish in Prospect Park.

From Machate Circle (also known as Park Circle), runners will go south along Ocean Parkway. Half marathon runners will turn around at Quentin Road and full marathon runners will turn around just after Avenue P.

After the turnaround, runners will run north on Ocean Parkway to Prospect Park. At Machate Circle, they’ll enter the park and run nearly the entire way around it along East Drive and West Drive before crossing the finish line on Center Drive.
