Join our office, the District 39 Cleanup Crew, The Kensington Stewards, Clean Up Kensington, and your neighbors on Sunday, August 30, from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM for a community clean-up of the Ocean Parkway Pedestrian Malls, where litter and illegal dumping remain persistent challenges.

Together, we can help keep our neighborhood clean, welcoming, and beautiful. Supplies—including gloves, garbage pickers, and bags—will be provided.

Sunday, September 22nd

10:00 a.m. to noon

A street tree care event will take place in Kensington on Sunday, September 22nd, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, hosted by Clean Up Kensington, New York City Councilmember Shahana Hanif, and Big Reuse.

Meet at Kensington Plaza/Beverley Road Plaza (map) to lend a hand in picking up litter, sweeping the streets, and applying finished compost to street trees in the area.

All cleanup supplies, such as gloves, trash bags, trash pickers, brooms, rakes, and dustpans, will be provided.

The event will start and end at Kensington Plaza/Beverley Road Plaza, located on Beverley Road, between E. 2nd Street and McDonald Avenue.

Clean Up Kensington will host six neighborhood cleanup events for the remainder of July and in August and September.

 

Lend a hand in picking up litter and sweeping the streets. All cleanup supplies, such as gloves, trash bags, trash pickers, brooms, rakes, and dustpans, will be provided.

Clean Up Kensington is a volunteer-driven community group that invites everyone to work together to clear away litter and care for street trees in Kensington.

 

Saturday, July 27th: Meet up with neighbors at 10:30 a.m. at Ocean Parkway and Ditmas Avenue. The route ends with refreshments at Newkirk Community Garden.

Tuesday, August 6th: Meet at 7:00 p.m. at Church Avenue and E. 8th Street. The route starts at Lofty Pigeon Books and ends at Hinterlands Bar. [canceled because of weather conditions]

Tuesday, August 13th: Meet at 7:00 p.m. at Ocean Parkway and Avenue C.

Tuesday, August 20th: Meet at 7:00 p.m. at Church Avenue and E. 8th Street. The route starts at Lofty Pigeon Books and ends at Hinterlands Bar.

Sunday, September 8th: Meet at 10:00 a.m. at Coney Island Avenue and Hinckley Place. The route starts at P.S. 889 and ends at Der Pioneer.

Sunday, September 22nd: Meet at Beverley Road and Church Avenue. This second annual tree care event with Big Reuse will start and end at Kensington Plaza.

COMMUNITY STREET CLEANUP: PEOPLE JOINING TOGETHER TO BEAUTIFY THE NEIGHBORHOOD

 

Community Cleanup in Kensington

Sunday, April 14th, 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Clean Up Kensington will partner with the Sanitation Foundation to clean up a portion of Kensington on Sunday, April 14th, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To join in, meet up at the corner of Cortelyou Road and East 8th Street at 11:00 a.m.

Clean Up Kensington is one of the community groups that's involved in the Sanitation Foundation's NYC Big Spring Clean, and it'll be featured on the Volunteer Hub.

From the Sanitation Foundation: 

We’re excited to announce the launch of a brand new program - the Sanitation Foundation's NYC Big Spring Clean. It’s a spectacular month of cleanups and activities during Earth Month where we champion New Yorkers and help them care for the places they love the most.

 

We’ll be working with 40+ community groups, 50+ schools and over a dozen corporate and non-profit partners to provide the leadership and resources they need to keep their favorite places clean.

 

As part of this massive citywide effort, we are introducing an online Volunteer Hub, which will serve as a go-to resource for New Yorkers to find out about volunteer opportunities near them and get involved.

Clean Up Kensington and a Girl Scout troop will co-host the next neighborhood cleanup event on Sunday, November 12th, from 11:00 a.m. to about 1:00 p.m.

 

The starting point will be The Craft Salon, finishing up at Poetica Coffee.

 

Meet up with Clean Up Kensington, local Girl Scout Troop 2834, and your neighbors at Church Avenue and E. 7th Street to pick up litter and sweep the streets.

You'll be provided with cleanup supplies, such as gloves, trash bags, trash pickers, brooms, rakes, and dustpans.

Join your neighbors in a partnership between Clean Up Kensington and Newkirk Community Garden to clean up a few blocks of Kensington. The neighborhood cleanup is scheduled for Sunday, August 6th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

 

Meet at Newkirk Community Garden at 736 E. 8th Street (corner of Newkirk Avenue) to pick up litter, sweep the streets, and beautify E. 8th Street and Newkirk Avenue.

 

All of the cleaning materials that will be needed will be provided.

 

Bring water and sunscreen, if you'll need them.

Join your neighbors to Clean Up Kensington at the springtime volunteer litter clean-up on Sunday, April 30th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. You're welcome to stay for as long or as short a time as you like.

 

Meet up with the other volunteers on the southeast corner of Beverley Road and E. 9th Street and end up at the newly-reopened Lea.

 

The route begins at Beverley and E. 9th, goes north on E. 9th to Cortelyou Road, turns left onto Cortelyou, goes to Stratford Road, and ends at Lea, located at 1022 Cortelyou.

 

The organizers will provide gloves, trash bags, trash pickers, brooms, and dustpans. But you can bring your own reusable gloves and picker, if you have them.

Join Clean Up Kensington next Sunday, March 5th, from 10:00 a.m. until about noon for a quick and easy volunteer street clean-up. Stay for as long or as short a time as you like.

This clean-up will follow a different route than the three previous meet-ups, starting at the corner of Cortelyou Road and E. 5th Street and working its way down Cortelyou toward Coney Island Avenue. You can see the route on the map at the top of this blog post.

Gloves, trash bags, and a limited number of trash pickers, brooms, and dustpans will be provided, but you're welcome to bring your own reusable gloves and picker, if you have them.

Everyone who participates in the clean-up will get a free scoop of gelato at Sweet Lea afterward.
