Clean Up Kensington will host six neighborhood cleanup events for the remainder of July and in August and September.

 

Lend a hand in picking up litter and sweeping the streets. All cleanup supplies, such as gloves, trash bags, trash pickers, brooms, rakes, and dustpans, will be provided.

Clean Up Kensington is a volunteer-driven community group that invites everyone to work together to clear away litter and care for street trees in Kensington.

 

Saturday, July 27th: Meet up with neighbors at 10:30 a.m. at Ocean Parkway and Ditmas Avenue. The route ends with refreshments at Newkirk Community Garden.

Tuesday, August 6th: Meet at 7:00 p.m. at Church Avenue and E. 8th Street. The route starts at Lofty Pigeon Books and ends at Hinterlands Bar. [canceled because of weather conditions]

Tuesday, August 13th: Meet at 7:00 p.m. at Ocean Parkway and Avenue C.

Sunday, September 8th: Meet at 10:00 a.m. at Coney Island Avenue and Hinckley Place. The route starts at P.S. 889 and ends at Der Pioneer.

Lofty Pigeon Books, Kensington's newest independent bookstore, will have its soft opening on Saturday, August 26th, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and its grand opening on Saturday, September 9th, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Lofty Pigeon Books will be a general-interest neighborhood bookstore. It will sell books for adults as well as children, will carry gift items, including stationery, greeting cards, home goods, toys, and games, and will be a gathering space for neighbors, featuring literary events, open mics, storytime, and book clubs.

 

Hours of operation for the week of Saturday, August 26th, through Friday, September 1st are

• Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• Monday: closed
• Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Thereafter, the open hours will be

• Mondays through Fridays, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
• Saturdays and Sundays, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

 

When online ordering is set up, it will provide access to all in-print titles for either shipping or in-store pickup.

INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE WILL OPEN IN KENSINGTON THIS SUMMER

 

Briana and Davi would like to introduce themselves and their bookstore to you in the post below. The bookstore will open in the neighborhood soon.

 

Indie Bookstore Veteran and Third-Generation Brooklynite Team Up to Open Lofty Pigeon Books in Kensington, Brooklyn

 

The husband-and-wife team of Davi Marra, who has been a bookseller for 23 years, most recently as the book buyer and manager at WORD Bookstores, and Briana Parker, a third-generation Brooklynite who has spent the past ten years in publishing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, are opening Lofty Pigeon Books on Church Avenue in Kensington, Brooklyn.

 

The couple met working at The Corner Bookstore on the Upper East Side in 2008, and they’ve harbored dreams of having their own store one day ever since. They plan to open Lofty Pigeon’s doors in August and host a grand opening block party in September.

 

The 1,200-square-foot space will have a diverse and responsive selection of more than 5,000 books as well as gift items, all tailored to the community.

 

A large kids section will serve the area’s families, and literary events, open mics, storytimes, and book clubs will make the community-focused space a gathering place for the neighborhood.

 

The duo launched their crowdfunding campaign on Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 29.
