The Yoon Sun Choi Quartet will wrap up this season's series of outdoor music concerts organized by Operation Gig this Sunday, October 2nd, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

From Operation Gig: 

"Local jazz vocalist Yoon Sun Choi brings her unique improvisational approach (and her crack quartet) to the grounds of the beautiful Japanese house."

Operation Gig! has been providing outdoor, live music performances on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. The series of concerts, held on the porches of houses in Ditmas Park, started in July 2020 to offer a venue where musicians could perform during the pandemic and to provide a safe space for people to gather to enjoy live music.

No entrance fee is charged, but donations to the musicians are welcome, either at a performance or at the tax-deductible Operation Gig Musician Guarantee Fund on GoFundMe.

Meet with the 72nd Precinct Community Council in person on Wednesday, October 12th, from 7:30 p.m. to 8: 30 p.m. Talk with the precinct's Commanding Officer (Deputy Inspector Ernesto Castro Jr.), the Community Affairs Officers, and the Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCOs) for each sector in the precinct.

 

Everyone who lives or works in Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights, South Slope, and Sunset Park is invited to the meeting to discuss past crimes and what the precinct is doing to prevent future crimes. Learn about the types of crime that have been taking place, their frequency, why they were able to happen, and how to prevent them.

Members of the public are invited to voice their concerns about criminal activity: armed robberies, rape and other forms of sexual assaults, home break-ins, burglaries in local stores, bank robberies, speeding drivers, stolen bicycles, package theft, and any other crimes.

Pumpkins and mums (chrysanthemums) have arrived at the East 4th Street Community Garden. At its fall flea market, you can buy pumpkins and mums as well as books, clothing, toys, housewares, and knickknacks.

The flea market will take place on Saturday, October 1st, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Sunday, October 2nd, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The event is in support of the garden, part of GreenThumb, the nation’s largest community garden program. The garden has been serving Kensington and Windsor Terrace since 1998.

The garden is a peaceful place that's open to the public from April 1st through October 31st on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

FROGGY PARK MURAL: A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS MORE IN DONATIONS IS NEEDED

Update, 9/26/22: The goal has been reached as of this morning--although Friends of Thomas J. Cuite Park won't turn away additional donations!

Friends of Thomas J. Cuite Park has commissioned Brooklyn-based artist Jaima to paint a community-themed mural (see the mockup above) on the wall at the Seeley Street entrance to the park. Froggy Park, as it's popularly known, is located on 19th Street, between 11th Avenue and Seeley Street, in Windsor Terrace.

The Friends' fundraising campaign is raising $1500, which the ioby Partnerships for Parks Match Program will match, for a total of $3,000. The fundraising deadline is September 30, 2022, and, as of this moment (8:00 p.m. on 9/25/22), $749 more is needed.

Jaima has already started creating the colorful, bold mural whose goal will be to create "a sense of community spirit, inclusivity and a love for nature."

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING SUSPENDED ON ROSH HASHANAH

 

Alternate side of the street parking regulations for street cleaning will be suspended on Monday, September 26th, and Tuesday, September 27th, for Rosh Hashanah.

Rules for parking meters will remain in effect; they are suspended only on major legal holidays: New Years’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

NO WEEKEND F TRAIN FROM CHURCH AVE. TO CONEY ISLAND FOR MANY MONTHS

"Beginning Friday, 9/23 until early 2023, passengers should expect that from Friday at 11:45 PM until Monday at 5 AM, there will be no F train service between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Church Ave due to the installation of CBTC signal modernization [communication-based train control]," according to New York City Councilmember Shahana Hanif's September 18th newsletter.

F trains will run between the Jamaica-179 St and Church Av stations, but they won't stop at these stations from Fridays at 11:45 p.m. until Mondays at 5:00 a.m.:

LIVE MUSIC CONCERTS OUTDOORS THIS WEEKEND

Operation Gig offers outdoor concerts to the community. It's mounted forty-three concerts this season. To pay working musicians a respectable fee when donations from the audience don't suffice, it established a Musician Guarantee Fund, and that fund now needs to be replenished.

Yoon Sun Choi Quartet
Yoon Sun Choi has spent more than two decades capturing listeners with her uncompromising, freewheeling and beautiful style and the breadth of her musical vision. A Korean-Canadian improvising vocalist and pianist, Choi has been based in New York City since 2000. Her main musical projects are with her longtime collaborative duo with pianist Jacob Sacks, her solo voice/piano work.
