TWO DAYS WITHOUT ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING

 Alternate side of the street parking (street cleaning) regulations will be suspended on Thursday, April 29th, and Friday, April 30th, for Holy Thursday (Orthodox) and Good Friday (Orthodox).

All other parking regulations, including those for parking meters, will remain in effect.

Parking meter regulations are only suspended on these major legal holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

 

COMMUNITY LITTER CLEANUP ON OCEAN PARKWAY

Neighbor Pete Gomori is organizing another litter cleanup on Ocean Parkway.

The weather is getting nicer. How about a cleanup event on Saturday, April 24th, from Ditmas Avenue to 18th Avenue, on the east side Ocean Parkway mall.

Meet at the southeast corner of Ditmas Avenue and Ocean Parkway at 10:00 a.m. Tools, gloves, and garbage bags will be provided.

The cleanup will continue until 11:30 a.m.

DONATE CLOTHING IN FRONT OF IHM CHURCH IN MAY

 

Clothing Donation Pick-up

Sunday, May 16th, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

 

A truck from St. Vincent de Paul Society will be collecting donated clothing in front of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Sunday, May 16th, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

 

Donations of new and gently-used clothing and shoes for women, men, and children are welcome. Used clothing and shoes must be clean and must be in wearable condition. Stained, ripped, worn-out clothes won't be accepted.

CIVIL RIGHTS AND BLACK LIVES MATTER DEMONSTRATIONS SEMIWEEKLY IN KWT (KENSINGTON/WINDSOR TERRACE)

 

 Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter Demonstrations

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

 

Demonstrations in support of civil rights and Black Lives Matter are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Colonel Donald Cook Square, the triangle park at the intersection of McDonald Avenue, Fort Hamilton Parkway, and Caton Avenue (map). 

 

The demonstrations are peaceful and family-friendly, and participants must wear a mask and be socially-distanced.

 

Bring a sign, a drum, and/or a bell with you, if you can. Extra signs might be available at the demonstration.

'Tis spring!

We are off to an early start! Over the past three weeks, we have planted peas, radishes, beans, cucumbers, and a variety of leafy greens. This year more than ever we are being mindful of our soil, by rotating crops, turning over our cover crops (largely nitrogen-fixing vetch), and adding lots of compost.

We had our fruit trees pruned in early March, and we are opening up a few new small flower beds on the hillside. A group of our members will be planting heirloom flowers and vegetables with the intention of saving the seeds.
    
Now we invite you all to come by for our Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 24, from 11 until 2 for a number of activities:

• garden walk-through
• plant swap and stoop sale
• compost giveaway (bring your own bags!)
• more grab-and-go freebies

You can also join Aaron Morales from our compost committee for a virtual Compost 101 workshop on April 22nd and April 24 at 7 PM:
Aaron will lead you through the ins-and-outs of composting and show what happens to your food waste when you drop it off at a local compost site. Compost 101 will cover three main ways to compost, perfect for small spaces. One of our founding members, Eileen Anderson, will also have her work displayed at the Brooklyn Quilters' Guild Earth Day Fence Show at Prospect Park West and Windsor Place from 11 until 4 on April 24th (same day as our event!). Not to be missed!

In addition to collecting public food scraps, we also have our own on-site composting operation; we grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs in over a dozen communal garden beds; we host public events, visiting classes, and youth science experiments; and a lot more. All of this 100% relies on volunteer labor and donated funds to keep our compost composting, our garden green, and our built infrastructure sturdy.

 

Some of our projects for this summer include building new raised beds, improving our rainwater harvester system, installing a patio in anticipation of hosting workshops on our site, and updating our compost system in order to increase capacity.

OUTDOOR SINGALONG ON CHURCH AVENUE WEEKLY ON SUNDAYS

Singalong with Yoshie

Sundays, 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

 

For children from birth through five years old--"and anyone else who likes to sing"--Yoshie Fruchter will hold singalongs on Church Avenue every Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., weather permitting.

 

The weekly singalong will be held outdoors, and it will be COVID-safe and socially-distanced. The program was scheduled to start on April 11th, but it was canceled because of rain.

 

The price of admission is $10 per child ($5 each for siblings).

Speak with Captain Jason Hagestad, the 66th Precinct's Commanding Officer, about your crime concerns at this week's public meeting of the 66th Precinct Community Council. Community input on crime and other policing issues is crucial.

 

Captain Hagestad has been the Commanding Officer of this precinct since January.

Community Councils are the liaison between the public and the NYPD. Meetings provide an opportunity for residents and business owners to talk with the precinct's Commanding Officer and other officers.

** Roadway Use Study of Prospect Park Drive, to  Make it More Park-Friendly Now That it is Car-Free

** 100K Eco-Friendly Diapers for Families in Need

Participatory Budgeting (PB) got canceled last year because of the pandemic, and it got canceled this year too. But four City Councilmembers worked together to find a way for their districts to participate in it anyway. District 39, which includes Kensington and Windsor Terrace and is represented by Brad Lander, is one of the four. 

 

Everyone living in District 39 who is at least eleven years old or is in at least sixth grade is eligible to vote, regardless of any other status.

More than $1.5 million from Councilmember Lander's annual budget will be spent on community-based projects suggested and researched by District 39 residents. Decide which projects you want the money spent on and vote for them online. Several of the projects are based in Kensington or Windsor Terrace.

Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14th.

One of the Capital Projects is for an existing outdoor recreational facility in Windsor Terrace.

Renovate Handball Courts at Greenwood Playground Renovate crumbling Greenwood Playground handball wall. The children/adults who play there deserve a usable, safe wall. 

Three of the Expense Projects will be based in Kensington. They address several significant issues: hunger, nutrition, women's income, clean air, and housing rights.

Neighborhood Farm Stand + Women’s Crafts Outlet

People in Need will help address food insecurity by providing access to fresh farm stand produce in southern Kensington, which currently has no local options, as well as a place for local women to earn income and gain financial independence by selling their own crafts.

 

More Trees for Kensington Streets

NYC Street Tree Consortium will plant approximately twelve (12) new street and community trees in Kensington, where there are fewer trees than in other areas of District 39. Street trees will be planted in existing beds. Community trees are planted in containers and live on public property like schools, libraries, building courtyards, and parks.

 

Kensington Tenant Rights

Fifth Avenue Committee, which has advocated for tenant rights in South Brooklyn for the past 40 years will create and distribute a multi-lingual “Know Your Rights” brochure for tenants in six (6) languages represented in Kensington: Spanish, Bengali, Urdu, Hebrew, Russian, and Uzbek.

Church Avenue Sessions

Live music is back on Kensington's Church Avenue, and it's moved outdoors.

 

Flatbush Jewish Center's music series "Church Avenue Sessions" returns this month with a performance by Matt Darriau's Who Is Manny Blanc?

 

Matt Darriau, the long-time clarinetist with the world-renowned, Grammy-winning Klezmatics and a Kensington resident, leads Who Is Manny Blanc? When Church Avenue Sessions began in March 2017, the group was its first performer.

"Who is Manny Blanc celebrates the music and aesthetic of the little known dynamic 60's Brooklyn musician and arranger. Blanc released an obscure yet astonishing LP in the early 60's called Jewish Jazz. Exotica meets jazz meets surf - from double electric guitars to harmonica driven duck-call dialogue. The LP is one of the earliest attempts at putting klezmer melody in a jazz and groovy context."

The series is normally held inside of the synagogue, but it will be held outside in the courtyard this year.

 

The concert will take place on Sunday, April 18th, at 5:00 p.m. Admission costs $10 and is payable at the event.

Pandemic precautions: Attendees must wear face masks. A maximum of approximately twenty-five people will be allowed in the courtyard to provide adequate space for social distancing.
