If you have a child who attends P.S. 130
or who is zoned for P.S. 130,
attend an important meeting about the school's future
on Tuesday, July 15, 2014
at 6:30 p.m.
in P.S.130
at 70 Ocean Parkway
The
District 15 Community Education Council will be holding a meeting at P.S. 130 next Tuesday. At the meeting, parents will discuss the possible zone changes for the area as well as the
proposed plans for the new school on Caton Avenue and E. 7th Street, P.S./I.S. 437.
One
possibility under consideration is the expansion of P.S. 130 to use both buildings to create an upper and
a lower school, using the new P.S./I.S. 437 building as
an upper school and the current P.S. 130 building as a lower school, similar to the P.S. 230
model.
Having an upper and a lower school at P.S. 130 would have these positive effects:
- Diversity: maintain the diversity of the population vs. splitting the zone and thus the community and resources.
- Overcrowding: relieve overcrowding immediately when the P.S./I.S. 437 building opens in September 2015 instead of a grade-by-grade integration starting only with kindergarten--and possibly first grade--in 2015.
- Resources: provide a larger population of students (1,025 vs. 325) with new resources, such as a gym, science lab, art room, library, auditorium, etc.
- Community: utilize an already organized and hardworking PTA, SLT, and general parent and school community versus starting one from scratch. 130 has great momentum!
- Programming and planning: provide programming and planning benefits for upper school students and teachers who will be in the same space as a middle school. (437 will also house 6 through 8 Intermediate School.)
- Pre-K: possibly provide space for additional full-day Pre-K.
