Many of us are deeply concerned by a climate of escalating hate.

Last Friday, an African American woman was brutally stabbed on the subway steps at the Church Avenue/East 18th Street station by a white man who was reportedly shouting racist and misogynist slurs at her.

Only a few weeks ago, a local synagogue was defaced by antisemitic graffiti.

This seems to reflect a trend toward increased anti-immigrant, racist, misogynistic, anti-LGBTQ sentiment and religious bigotry, which we see nationwide and even in New York City.

This is not who Kensington is. For years, we have been a neighborhood made richer by our amazing diversity, where longtime residents of different races, faiths, and national origins have lived, worked, played, and worshipped in close proximity and supported one another as neighbors.

Now is the time for us to stand up and let everyone know we are united against bigots. Our love and respect for one another is far more powerful than their hate.

Join Kensington Stewards and Occupy Kensington on Friday, November 16th, at 5:30 p.m. at Kensington Plaza (located in front of Walgreens at Beverley Road and McDonald Avenue) to bring a message of unity and neighborly love: "We Are All One Community. Unite Against Hate."

SNOW ALERT FOR THURSDAY

A Snow Alert goes into effect on Thursday, November 15th, at noon. 

Alternate side of the street parking regulations will be suspended citywide to facilitate winter weather preparations and snow removal. Payment at parking meters will remain in effect throughout the city.

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is coordinating with New York City Emergency Management and the Department of Transportation on snow-clearing protocol, and all relevant city agencies have been notified.

DSNY will continue to monitor forecasts and will provide updates as the snow approaches.

All winter weather information and information about the City’s response to the storm is on the city’s Severe Weather website at www.nyc.gov/severeweather or at 311.

KENSINGTON'S 66TH PRECINCT SECTOR D "BEAT COPS" ARE HOLDING THEIR FIRST COMMUNITY MEETING

Community Safety Meeting with Kensington's "Beat Cops"
Thursday, December 6th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCOs) for the 66th Precinct's Sector D (Kensington) will meet with residents at a community safety meeting on Thursday, December 6th, at 7:00 p.m. The doors will be opened at 6:30 p.m. to serve refreshments.

This is the first community meeting the officers will hold since they began patrolling Sector D in July.

The NCOs are Police Officer Viviane Perrone (phone: (917) 863-5169, e-mail: viviane.perrone @ nypd.org) and Police Officer Karol Smiarowski (phone: (917) 826-6569, e-mail: karol.smiarowski @ nypd.org. They've replaced the previous NCOs for Sector D, Shawney Chow and Joel Ramirez.
 
For the past few years, the NYPD has divided precincts into sectors as part of its new policing model, which it calls "community policing." The four sectors within the 66th Precinct are Sector A or Adam, Sector B or Boy, Sector C or Charlie, and Sector D or David.

The boundaries of Sector D are Fort Hamilton Parkway and Caton Avenue to the north, Coney Island Avenue to the east, 18th Avenue and Avenue F to the south, and McDonald Avenue and 37th Street to the west.

The officers will update the community about public safety issues in the neighborhood. They'll answer your questions and listen to your concerns, complaints, and suggestions about assaults and robberies on the street, home burglaries, packages stolen from porches and lobbies, street safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, and any other issues.

66th Precinct Community Council Monthly Meeting
Thursday, November 15th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 

Report crimes and other policing matters in Kensington, Borough Park, and Midwood at the upcoming 66th Precinct Community Council meeting. 

The 66th Precinct's commanding officer, Captain David Wall, will update residents on recent crimes in those neighborhoods, but the input of people who live within the boundaries of the precinct is essential. 

At the meeting, the public can learn about the various programs available to the community through the precinct. 

The meeting will be held on Thursday, November 15th, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. It's free, and it's open to the public. 

Boundaries of the 66th Precinct:

The purpose of the 66th Precinct Community Council is to provide the critical interface between citizens and police through regular monthly meetings. Meetings are normally held on the third Thursday of the month, from September through June. The Community Council does not meet in July or August.

P.S. 130 PTA TO HOLD 6TH ANNUAL ART AUCTION; BIDDING IS LIVE

P.S. 130 PTA to Hold 6th Annual Art Auction on 11/17 | Bidding Is Live

The P.S. 130 PTA is holding its 6th Annual Art Auction on Saturday, November 17th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Lark Cafe, located at 1007 Church Avenue, Brooklyn, between E. 10th Street and Stratford Road (map).

Bidding is open to the public and will be entirely online at tinyurl.com/130artauction2018, beginning today, November 12th, at 9:00 a.m. Bidding will end promptly at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 17th.

All proceeds will benefit the P.S. 130 PTA, a Title I school in Brooklyn serving over 800 students.

The auction will feature great deals on more than eighty works of art donated by a range of local and nationally-recognized artists, including
  

• Hiroshi Sugimoto, a contemporary Japanese photographer whose esoteric practice explores memory and time, 
• William Mortensen, the last of the great pictorialist photographers, recently with retrospectives in New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle, 
• Julie Peppito, recipient of the 2001 New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Fellowship for sculpture, 
• Scott Teplin, whose work is included in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art (New York City and San Francisco), The New Museum, The Walker Art Center, and The New York Public Library, and 
• Harvey Wang, who has exhibited widely at museums, including the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the New York Historical Society, and the Museum of the City of New York. 

There is a suggested $10 donation at the door. Drinks and snacks will be served thanks to event sponsors Wine & Spirits, Le Paddock, Butterfunk Kitchen, and the Windsor Terrace Food Coop.

This event is a wonderful way for artists and art lovers to support P.S. 130 and for P.S. 130 to support the arts community. 

The Art Auction is an opportunity to celebrate and continue our tradition of arts enrichment at P.S. 130. We are excited to provide a network of collectors for artists while also raising funds to support important PTA initiatives, including our Art Box program, which provides Kindergarten through 2nd grade classrooms with an Art Box and Art Caddy stocked with art-making materials that are available for self-directed play time.

Kem Joy Ukwu's short-story collection Locked Gray/Linked Blue was one of the finalists for the 2016 New American Fiction Prize and published by Kindred Books, of Brain Mill Press, in 2018.

Unite to Disseminate a Positive Message against Hate and White Supremacy

Occupy Kensington Meeting Sunday, November 11th, 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. From Occupy Kensington: Dear Neighbors and Fellow Activists, Many are feeling overwhelmed, angry, sad, or perplexed after the recent spate of violence, fueled by racist, xenophobic, anti-immigrant, anti Muslim, and antisemitic rhetoric. A few weeks ago, in Queens, white supremacists from The Vanguard posted flyers telling residents it was their "Civic Duty" to turn in "illegal aliens" to ICE—chillingly reminiscent of similar tactics used during the rise of Nazi Germany. Since then, of course, there has been the more widely-publicized attempted violence against prominent critics of the President, the synagogue massacre, and the shooting of two random African Americans by a racist who tried and failed earlier to enter a black church. While it may take years to build anew at a national level, there is much we can and should do immediately as a neighborhood. When white supremacist fliers appeared in Queens, Make The Road by Walking, which has a Queens branch, replaced the offending fliers with their own. City Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer took to Twitter with a video of himself tearing down one of The Vanguard’s signs. These swift counter measures made CNN News and were doubtless empowering for the neighborhood. Such responses also send a message of neighborhood unity to white supremacists. Occupy Kensington is well-situated to mobilize in the event of a similar incident here. Not only is much of our membership well-educated on immigration issues but we also have hands-on experience from two flier-posting/distribution campaigns. Please join other Occupy Kensington members for a meeting on Sunday, November 11th, at 7:30 p.m., at 309 E. 5th Street. Bring your thoughts on confronting the current situation at a neighborhood level as well as ideas on (a) an immediate flier posting to boost morale and promote neighborhood solidarity and/or unity around pro-immigrant, anti-racist values and (b) a preparedness plan for rapid response in the event of an incident (including, but not restricted to, our own flier posting). TOWN HALL ON PUBLIC SAFETY AT OCEAN PARKWAY/PROSPECT EXPRESSWAY/CHURCH AVENUE

Town Hall on Public Safety at

 Ocean Parkway/Prospect Expressway/Church Avenue

Monday, November 19th

6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

After a truck driver struck and killed a pedestrian last spring at the Ocean Parkway/Prospect Expressway/Church Avenue intersection, Councilmember Brad Lander and Assemblymember Robert Carroll held a Town Hall about the deadly location.

The Town Hall was held in partnership with the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) so that the two agencies could get feedback from the community.

Decisions about the Prospect Expressway, a state highway, are made by the New York State Department of Transportation. On the other hand, Ocean Parkway and Church Avenue are city roads regulated by the New York City Department of Transportation. So when changes and improvements are needed, the two agencies are required to collaborate for the common good.

The agencies had implemented some short-term actions, such as adding missing speed limit signs and adding more signals on the approach to Church Avenue.

NYCDOT and NYSDOT have now finished their phase of data collection. They've put together a report with traffic safety measures that they'll share with the community at a public Town Hall. After the community hears DOT's recommendations, DOT will answer questions and listen to feedback. 

The Town Hall will take place on Monday, November 19th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the P.S. 130 Upper School.

JOB OPENINGS AT WINDSOR TERRACE FOOD COOP

If you're looking for some satisfying part-time work in the neighborhood, you might be interested in becoming a store manager at the Windsor Terrace Food Coop.

Store managers oversee the store during hours of operation. They'll be engaged on a full-day or a part-day basis. Duties include

• supervision of coop members on their shifts,
• training of coop members to perform their duties,
• record keeping,
• accepting vendor deliveries, as appropriate, and
• assisting with ordering/purchasing.

The exact duties of the store managers may vary, depending on the requirements on the day the store is being managed. All managers will be appropriately trained for their roles.

Compensation is $20 per hour.

The days that the coop is open are Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays.
