KWT CANINE WATCH: LOCAL DOGS AND THEIR HUMANS ARE IN THE NEWS

"Residents are using crime fighting dogs to patrol the streets of Kensington and Windsor Terrace."

                                    WABC Local News

"K9Watch isn’t a dispatch service; volunteers simply walk their pets at night as they normally would and loop around area train stations. Women who wish to be escorted home, simply have to flag down a dog. They’re easy to spot with their bright yellow bandanas."

"you don't even need to own a dog to participate—interested volunteers are encouraged to simply walk around the neighborhood (in pairs)."

Brooklyn: Kensington/Windsor Terrace
Neighbors Launch K9WaTch to Create Safer Community
In Response to Ongoing Sexual Assaults in Our Neighborhood

On Saturday, November 12, 2011 from 5 to 7 pm, Kensington/Windsor Terrace  (KWT) neighbors and their dogs will gather at Brooklyn Commune (601 Greenwood Avenue, at Prospect Avenue) to launch K9WaTch (http://k9watch.org), the Kensington/Windsor Terrace Canine Watch. K9WaTch volunteers and their dogs, identified by brightly colored bandanas, will monitor the neighborhood streets in the evenings in an effort to regain safety and security in our neighborhood. K9WaTch was formed as a volunteer collective in October 2011 in response to assaults, attempted assaults, and muggings in the KWT area of Brooklyn. After weeks of planning and recruiting more than twenty volunteers and their canine partners, the K9WaTch program starts this weekend. K9WaTch volunteers will offer a nightly presence in the neighborhood. The launch event includes volunteers and their dogs and will provide photo and interview opportunities.

“I appreciate the feeling of community here and the work that people are doing in our neighborhood organizations. So when I heard that women were being attacked, it seemed only natural to participate in trying to make us all safer,” says Joy Rich, an organizer for K9WaTch who has been a KWT resident for twenty-four years, as well as a member of KARMABrooklyn's Resident Advisory Board and its blogger since its founding in 2009.

A group of concerned neighbors met up after connecting on our neighborhood email list, and decided to join forces to make our neighborhood safer by forming K9WaTch. Dog owners and non-dog-owners alike will don brightly colored bandanas and create increased neighborly presence at subway stops and on dark streets in the evenings. Our presence as a caring neighborhood collective discourages crime by creating awareness and promoting watchfulness in our community.

MOBILE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

K9WaTch (KWT Canine Watch) is a free, all-volunteer safety service that will harness the power of neighborhood residents who are already outside in the evening--people who are walking their dogs.
The service will start when there are at least twenty dog owners registered to participate. That goal has almost been reached. Dog owners, please fill out a Volunteer Application on the K9WaTch website!

Volunteers are also needed to help spread the word about K9WaTch by distributing flyers and by talking about it at community meetings.

The group has been encouraging dog owners in the Kensington-Windsor Terrace area to walk their dogs near our local subway stations--the two ends of the Fort Hamilton Parkway station and the Albemarle Road end of the Church Avenue station. They can stay at a station for a specific amount of time (fifteen minutes, thirty minutes, or whatever amount of time they can spare), stay until a train arrives, or escort women home.

People without dogs are also welcome to participate by pairing up with another K9WaTcher.

Six local businesses and one community organization are sponsoring KWT Canine Watch. All of them donated to this cause without hesitation. The sponsors are Cynthia King Dance Studio, Sean Casey Animal Rescue, brooklyn-real, Chino's Deli, Parkview Realty, Brooklyn Commune, and KARMABrooklyn.

Volunteers are also needed to help spread the word about KWT Canine Watch by distributing flyers and by talking about it at community meetings.

CANINE WATCH IS FORMING TO ESCORT WOMEN HOME

KWT Canine Watch (also known as K9WaTch and Kensington-Windsor Canine Watch) is being formed by neighborhood residents right now in response to the dozen or more nighttime sexual attacks against women that have taken place in the past six months--one as recently as last night. The walking-home service will harness the power of neighbors who are already outside in the evening--people who are walking their dogs.

Dog owners in the Kensington-Windsor Terrace area are being encouraged to walk their dogs near our local subway stations and escort women home so they're not on the street alone. People who don't have dogs are also welcome to participate by pairing up with another K9WaTcher.

The process is simple: When you take your canine companion for an evening walk, put on the official brightly-colored KWT Canine Watch bandana so that women looking for an escorted walk home can easily identify you. Walk near the Fort Hamilton or Church Avenue subway stations and wait to see if any women need an escort.

The commitment asked of you will be minimal--but it's so important to keeping our streets safe. Your help is truly needed to get this effort up and running. At least twenty committed dog walkers are needed before the service can begin.

The three places of concern are the two ends of the Fort Hamilton Parkway subway station (at E. 5th Street and at Prospect Avenue) and the Albemarle Road exit of the Church Avenue station.

To volunteer, fill out the K9WaTch Volunteer Application and indicate if you
  • have a dog and would like to volunteer as an escort
  • do not have a dog and would like to volunteer as an escort, paired with another person
  • would like to help organize the K9WaTch program
  • would like to help organize the K9WaTch program but cannot be an escort
Your help is also needed in spreading the word about K9WaTch. Download and print copies of the K9WaTch flyer, post them in store windows, and hand them to people who are walking dogs and people who aren't walking dogs.
