About P.S. 130
P.S. 130 is a public elementary school serving over 700
students in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn. Their students come from dozens of
countries, speak over 22 languages, and embody a myriad of ethnic, cultural,
and socioeconomic backgrounds. More than 90 percent of their students qualify for
free lunch under the federal Title I program. It is the most ethnically
and racially diverse school in Brooklyn’s District 15.
The PS 130 PTA Music Committee supports music education at
the school and brings visiting artists directly into classrooms. This year’s
roster of visiting high-profile teaching artists includes JD Allen, Jaimeo
Brown, Martha Redbone and Min Xiao-Fen, plus presentations by parent members of
the committee.
P.S. 130 remains dedicated to keeping music in the classroom
as an essential part of its mission. The school added a second music
teacher to our faculty this year. All students receive general music
instruction, including 3 years of keyboard study; electives include guitar club
and band. The new Upper School building also includes a music suite with
a band room and 2 practice rooms. To equip these rooms, the school
received 3 new pianos and a complete collection of new band and rhythm section
instruments from the Department of Education.
Admission is free to all, but donations to the P.S. 130 PTA
will be graciously accepted. These funds will support the work of the
PTA, including their music and arts programs.
