Con Edison just issued an alert requesting that all New York City customers conserve electricity by turning off equipment that isn't being used, keeping air conditioners set at 78 degrees, and running washers, dryers, and dishwashers only at night. If you lose electricity, call Con Edison at (800) 752-6633 or report it online.

Con Edison’s overall electric use peaked at 13,189 megawatts at 4 p.m. today, beating the all-time record of 13,141 megawatts set on August 2, 2006.
