BRAD LANDER ON SNOW REMOVAL

From City Councilmember Brad Lander:

Dear Neighbors,

I know it's been an extremely frustrating few days for many of you. My staff has been hard at work, trying to help the scores of people who have contacted my office while I’ve been on my way back from out of town.

From the many of you who have e-mailed or called, I know that the snow (and car and bus) removal seems to be taking much longer than usual. We are still following up with the Department of Sanitation to address some of the major streets in the district (including Henry Street, Prospect Park West, McDonald Ave, and Cortelyou Road in Kensington) and have passed many of your requests about other streets on to them as well.

Unfortunately, we now hear that it may not be until the end of Wednesday before some streets in our neighborhood are plowed, even for the first time.  (FYI-- alternate side parking remains suspended for Wednesday). 

If your street hasn't been plowed or if there is a sidewalk that needs attention, my office has set up an online form at http://www.bradlander.com/snow.  You can also e-mail us at lander [at] council.nyc.gov, or call us at (718) 499-1090.

You should try 311 first, but I know they have been overwhelmed, and slow to respond.  I know that one more web-form is NOT what you need if you’re still stuck on your street – but we will do our best to follow up to requests submitted at www.bradlander.com/snow. Of course, if there is an emergency, you should call 911.

The City Council has set up a hearing to review the City’s response to this storm for January 10th at 1pm. We’ll be asking questions about what happened, why the response seems so inadequate in so many neighborhoods across the city, and what needs to be done for the future. I’ll be eager to hear your stories – however frustrating – as we prepare for that hearing.

REPORT UNPLOWED STREETS

Call 311 to report unplowed streets, abandoned vehicles that are blocking snow removal, and uncleared sidewalks. Also report them to Public Advocate Bill de Blasio's office by calling the Public Advocate Hotline at (212) 669-7250 or by filing a report on his website at http://www.advocate.nyc.gov/content/report-road-conditions-your-neighborhood.

Mr. de Blasio is seeking your input so that he can make an inquiry into the city government’s preparedness and its response to the blizzard and determine what the city needs to do in order to be better prepared the next time.

He is contacting the Office of Emergency Management about its decision to not declare a Snow Emergency during the storm and also contacting the Department of Sanitation about its staffing levels.

UNPLOWED SIDE STREETS

Video, 1:03 p.m., Newkirk and Westminster avenues: "Unplowed side streets keeping BK residents from work"

Some Brooklyn residents are still snowed in as unplowed side streets have prevented them from digging out their cars.

Some who had to show up for work this morning say they had to commute on foot because some unplowed streets just weren’t drivable. Other residents say their streets are still barely even walkable.

Coney Island Avenue is jammed up with abandoned cabs, cars and a coach bus. Vince Vivona, who lives on Newkirk Avenue, said the heavy snow was no match for even a plow: it got stuck in front of his home for hours.

Many residents say they feel short-changed by the borough's snow removal efforts.

NO BUS SERVICE ON THESE ROUTES

SUBWAY SERVICE UPDATE

Q train: no service between Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue in both directions.   

N train: no service between Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue and Whitehall Street in both directions. 

Subways: Service outages on a number of lines, especially those that operate in open cuts, particularly in Brooklyn. Major delays-- and, in some cases, suspensions--in service through the morning and into the afternoon on portions of the Long Island Rail Road and the subway system.

 

Buses: Service remains severely affected. Operating with delays, especially in Southern Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Queens. Some routes shortened due to street conditions.

Limited-Stop buses: service in New York City remains suspended.

TONIGHT'S COMMUNITY BOARD 12 MEETING IS CANCELED

The Community Board 12 meeting scheduled for tonight, December 28th, has been canceled because of inclement weather.

F AND G TRAIN SERVICE UPDATE

The MTA says "Full F Line subway service has been restored; G service is expected to resume Tuesday morning." However, as of this evening at 9:52 p.m., "Due to inclement weather,  train service is running with delays in both directions."

SANITATION DEPARTMENT PICKUPS SUSPENDED

All garbage and recycling pickups have been suspended by the Sanitation Department so that it can clear away the massive amounts of snow deposited by yesterday's blizzard. For the most up-to-date information, call 311 or check the department's website.

FERAL CAT CARE

Our neighborhood's feral cats can be protected from the cruelties of winter weather--like yesterday's blizzard. The Neighborhood Cats website explains how to build a winter shelter for feral cats, provides a list of ready-made shelters available for purchase and locations for buying straw, and describes how to prevent water from freezing.

66TH PRECINCT COMMUNITY COUNCIL: DATE CHANGE

Due to a scheduling conflict, the next meeting of the 66th Precinct Community Council has been changed from January 20, 2011, to January 27, 2011, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. 

Location: 5910 13th Avenue, between 59th and 60th streets.

The 66th Precinct Community Council normally meets on the third Thursday of the month, from September through June, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All residents of the community are invited to attend the meetings. For further details, call the precinct at (718) 851-5601.

NEW YORK TIMES LAWSUIT AGAINST THE NYPD

If it's successful, a lawsuit filed against the New York Police Department yesterday by The New York Times would make more information about crime available to the public. The Times says there is "a pattern and practice by which the police avoided providing material that the State Freedom of Information Law said must be released."

Two of the requests made by The Times are of particular interest--the NYPD's crime incident reports and hate crimes databases:

One example of the department’s reluctance to give out data involved statistics for minor crimes — offenses like misdemeanor thefts and assaults, marijuana possession and sex offenses other than rape. The department acknowledged last month that it had not forwarded the data to the state since 2002. It was one of only two police agencies in the state that had not done so.

Because those statistics for minor crimes are withheld, this blog's posts about reported crimes only include felonies.

Its welcome is not to shake your hand, but to bust your chops. The regulars are a microcosm of Kensington’s nonallegiance to any particular ethnicity or social crowd.
