ELDERLY NEED VISITORS

From Selfhelp Community Services:
Selfhelp Community Services, which is located at 419 Church Avenue between E. 4th and E. 5th streets, is looking for people to visit our Holocaust survivors in their homes once a week. Our clients live all over Brooklyn, and they can be seen any day of the week and in the evening. The only restriction is that this isn't a good opportunity for families with children under 10.

I know everyone is inundated with volunteer requests, but people who responded to my appeal last year have found their relationship with their older friend very very rewarding.

Please contact me if you are interested, and thank you.

IF YOU CAN SKYPE OR IF YOU CAN TRANSLATE

Selfhelp Community Services on Church Avenue needs people to volunteer in its office to
  1. assist its senior citizen clients in using Skype to contact faraway relatives or friends. Knowledge of Russian, Spanish, or any dialect of Chinese is a plus, but it isn't required.
  2. assist in translating for its senior citizen clients who are Spanish-speaking or Chinese-speaking.
If you can help with either or both of those, call Fran Tarshish at Selfhelp at (718) 633-1300, or send an e-mail to her at ftarshish @ selfhelp.net.

Selfhelp Community Services is a non-profit organization
that works with senior citizens.

VISITORS NEEDED FOR HOMEBOUND HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS

Selfhelp Community Services needs volunteers to visit housebound senior citizen Holocaust survivors in their homes in various Brooklyn neighborhoods for just an hour a week.

In the Friendly Visitors Program, the client and the visitor can enjoy such activities as playing chess, playing cards, talking, sharing family photos, making scrapbooks, discussing current events, learning each other's history, taking a walk--and anything else that interests both of you.

If physical visits aren't possible, phone visits can be arranged.

Seniors come from diverse backgrounds, so Selfhelp is looking for volunteers who speak Russian, Hungarian, Polish, or English.

To talk more about the Friendly Visitors Program, call (718) 633-1300 or send an e-mail to Fran Tarshish at  ftarshish @ yahoo.com.

SELFHELP COMMUNITY SERVICES GETS FINANCIAL HELP

Kensington's Selfhelp Community Services received $5,000 today from the Brooklyn Community Foundation's (BCF) Caring Neighbors Fund. Time Warner Cable gifted the money to BCF to disperse to Brooklyn organizations for programs that help senior citizens maintain their independence and live at home for as long as possible in a safe, stable environment and that address such concerns as social isolation and deteriorating health.

Selfhelp Community Services' programs
enable the elderly and other at-risk populations to live in their own homes, independently and with dignity. They'll use the funds for their Chore Services for Brooklyn Elderly program for frail low-income seniors.
