MESSAGING RESISTANCE: THE TERRACE VISIBILITY BRIGADE

Terrace Visibility Brigade

Wednesdays, 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Terrace Visibility Brigade, a group of pro-democracy neighbors, displays timely political messages on banners and signs on the 11th Avenue bridge, above the Prospect Expressway, every Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Like-minded people are welcome to participate. 

The Terrace Visibility Brigade is part of the nation-wide Visibility Brigade movement, which has one or more chapters in almost every state.

Margaret Neill, the founder of this chapter, explains the impetus and the continuing need for it.

My husband Don and I have been doing this every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. for 16 weeks, taking a break over the holidays. We are both artists who want to do our part to help bring people together during this divisive time in our country.

I got activated in the resistance during Trump’s second term. I started learning about activism thru the great leaders at Target Majority on the  Upper West Side, the Indivisible Leaders, Brooklyn Indivisible, and the daily letters of Heather Cox Richardson and others, like Jessica Craven, who all advocated for working in your own neighborhood, hyperlocally.

Soon, I came upon The Visibility Brigade through a bridge action over the BQE by Brooklyn Visibility, part of Indivisible Brooklyn. I decided to spread the word on more bridges and to pick another bridge right in my own neighborhood. And so, I registered and became the leader of the 11th Avenue bridge over the Prospect Expressway (between 18th and 19th streets) with the Nationwide Visibility Brigade. We are on the map. 

There are actions on McDonald Avenue at Fort Hamilton Parkway and Church Avenue and at Church Avenue on Ocean Parkway with Freedom Fridays, which I could also join, but I thought I’d try to activate neighbors closer to me.

We need to learn about each other and also come together during this divisive time in our country. We all can learn that there are ways we can push back and that we must. The words of Heather Cox Richardson ring in my ears: there are more of us than them and we can help to build a better future.

So, in that vein, I endeavor to bring joy and exuberance to our resistance and help others know they are not alone.

More and more people are joining. The kids really enjoy it. We usually have home-baked cookies. Plenty of signs and hot chocolate.

Likewise, I am also working on a food drive to help bring groceries to the food pantry of The Center for Family Life in Sunset Park (https://www.centerforfamilylife.org/), a settlement-type nonprofit that is doing amazing work for the vibrant immigrant community all around us.

I am noticing that people seem to find some relief in connecting their feelings to action, and it’s great to be part of that transformation.

The next meeting between the public, the 72nd Precinct Community Council, and officers of the 72nd Precinct will be held on Thursday, March 12th, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (rescheduled from Tuesday, March 10th).

People who live or work in Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights, South Slope, and Sunset Park are invited to the meeting to discuss past crimes as well as to learn what the precinct is doing to prevent future crimes.

Find out about the types of crime that have been taking place, their frequency, any enabling factors, and how to prevent them.

Members of the public are invited to voice their concerns about criminal activity, including armed robberies, rape and other forms of sexual assaults, home break-ins, burglaries in local stores, bank robberies, speeding drivers, stolen bicycles, package theft, and other crimes.

Join us for the BROOKNITTERS FOR MINNESOTA "Melt the Ice Hat" Knitalong.

The cost of attending is $5 which will go directly to the fabulous folks at Needle + Skein in MN who drafted the hat pattern.

 All proceeds from the sale of this pattern go to the immigrant aid agencies who will distribute the funds to those impacted  by the actions of ICE.

Each person who attends should bring their own yarn + knitting needles. We have plenty of stitch markers and yarn needles if needed. See below for supply info:

BIKERS AND WALKERS: ANSWER A SURVEY ABOUT THE CITY'S PLAN TO EXPAND THE GREATER GREENWAY NETWORK

New York City is home to North America’s oldest greenway, Brooklyn's own Ocean Parkway. It's also the home of the nation's oldest bike path, opened in 1894.

Several New York City agencies are currently working together to enhance and expand the 506-mile greenway network, with the goal of providing high-quality, continuous biking and walking facilities in all five boroughs.

The Greater Greenways Long-Term Expansion Plan is a citywide initiative that the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the New York City Department of Transportation, and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation are leading.

A 90-page PDF of the full plan is available at https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/greater-greenways.pdf. It is presented in two chapters: "Greenways of Today" and "Greenways of Tomorrow." 

What is meant by "greenways": continuous, multi-use corridors designed for human-powered and electric-assist transportation and recreation.

Defined and named through community-driven planning, greenways often follow natural or man-made linear spaces such as railways, highways, rivers, waterfronts, and parkland.

A survey and interactive map support this expansion plan. You can provide feedback by participating in the five-minute survey about the design of future greenways across New York City. The survey closes on Monday, March 2nd, at 5:00 p.m.

Apply to join a talented cohort that will gather in Brooklyn this spring in a safe space to dig deep and write together over a weekend, guided by author and cultural organizer, Roohi Choudhry, a resident of Kensington, Brooklyn.

Over the summer, we’ll curate a public performance and discussion event focused on how to channel personal narrative into a movement. Along the way, you’ll receive one-on-one coaching and feedback.
