NEW YEAR'S DAY PARKING RULES

Alternate side of the street parking regulations for street cleaning will be suspended on Sunday, January 1st, for New Year's Day and Monday, January 2nd, for New Year's Day (observed).

Rules for parking meters will also be suspended. The rules are suspended only on these major legal holidays: New Years’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Even though alternate side parking is suspended, any other posted parking time limits and rules have to be followed.

Suspension applies from midnight of the day before the suspension until midnight of the day of the suspension.

CHRISTMAS TREE AND WREATH CURBSIDE COLLECTION AND MULCHFEST

 

From the New York City Sanitation Department:

Christmas Tree Collection

DSNY will collect clean Christmas trees (and wreaths!) from Friday, January 6, 2023 through Saturday, January 14, 2023 — weather permitting.

Remember, Christmas trees and wreaths are collected separately from your trash and recycling. They are scouted at the curb to make efficient collection routes, so yours may not be picked up immediately.

Before your Christmas trees and wreaths can be collected, you MUST:

• Remove ALL lights, ornaments, tinsel, and stands. Remove stands from trees and metal frames and wires from wreaths.
• Make sure they are not wrapped in ANY plastic or placed inside a plastic bag.
• Leave them at the curb between the designated dates (January 6 - 14).

Trees and wreaths are chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into rich compost for NYC's parks, institutions, and community gardens.

Artificial Trees

Donate or sell used artificial trees in good condition at donateNYC.

You can also take apart your tree to recycle the base and trunk (pole) with your metal, glass, plastic and cartons. Remove all lights, ornaments and tinsel before placing at the curb.

Otherwise, set it out as garbage on a regular collection day. Look up your collection schedule.

Make Your Own Mulch

Use evergreen boughs and branches from your Christmas tree as mulch to enrich the soil in your garden or street tree beds. Just cut off the smaller branches of your Christmas tree and remove the twigs from evergreen boughs. Lay three to four inches of these trimmings over the bare soil around street trees or in your garden. 

After removing the branches for mulch, you can take your tree to Mulchfest or leave it out for our collection.

Mulchfest

Remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel, and stands from natural trees and take them to Mulchfest for free chipping.

Winter Solstice Celebration

Wednesday, December 21st, 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The onset of winter will be celebrated with a community sing-a-long, neighborliness, and free hot cocoa from Angelica's Coffee Shop. The Kensington Stewards will hold its annual winter solstice celebration on Wednesday, December 21st, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. 

The event is presented in conjunction with Make Music Winter, part of a worldwide celebration of music.

SCOUTS HOLIDAY BAKE SALE

 

Enjoy baked treats and hot cocoa at the Brooklyn Scouts Troop 1213th Lookout Hill holiday bake sale. It'll take place tomorrow (Sunday, December 18th) from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The proceeds of the sale will be used to support Scout financial aid.

FIDO 2023 DOG CALENDAR

 

The FIDO 2023 calendar, featuring photos of dogs in Prospect Park, will be for sale in the Kensington Dog Run on Saturday, December 17th, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and on Sunday, December 18th, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

If your dog's photo is in the calendar, you'll get a copy of the calendar for free.

Additional calendars will be available for sale at these prices: 1 calendar for $8, 2 calendars for $15, and 3 calendars for $20.

The Kensington Dog Run, located on Coney Island Avenue in the Parade Ground near Prospect Park, opened in July 2020 after years of community advocacy. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

About Brooklyn Community Board 12

Brooklyn Community Board 12 encompasses the neighborhoods of Borough Park and parts of Kensington, Sunset Park, and Midwood.

We are home to a diverse demographic. Borough Park is known for its large enclave of Chasidic Jewish residents. Kensington is home to a rapidly growing Pakistani and Bangladeshi Community. Sunset Park, specifically 8th Avenue which borders District 12 as well as District 7, is the location of Brooklyn's Chinatown. Midwood's Ocean Parkway is the site of a 4.86 miles-long boulevard that connects Coney Island Beach to Prospect Park.

A community is only as good as the sum of its parts. We have an incredibly diverse one here in our district with people from all walks of life. The community board is the place where we come together to discuss, debate and make recommendations to the greater NYC government on matters that impact our district. I have the privilege of being appointed by my fellow board members, who graciously volunteer their time, to lead this board as Chairman.

As chairman, I preside over the monthly board meetings. All meetings are open to the public and are a forum for residents to discuss their opinions and concerns. I am also in charge of forming committees and appointing their chairpersons. It is my job to set the agenda and the direction for the board. I have been involved in many community projects and organizations prior to my appointment as chair, and proudly continue in these endeavors. This community is my home and I am humbled by the opportunity to serve it.

WRITING WORKSHOPS: "LET'S WRITE TOGETHER" (FREE, INDOORS)

Writing Workshop

Monday, December 12th and 19th, 10:30 a.m. to noon

Micky Shorr is leading a series of three writing workshops on Mondays. The series began on December 5th and will continue on December 12th and 19th, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Micky, a NY Writers Coalition-trained leader, has facilitated writing groups in public libraries--including the Windsor Terrace branch--both online and in person. 

She will offer a writing prompt for the group, and group members will all write together, using the prompt as a suggestion. 

Members will be asked to share their work, but it is not a requirement. They will offer feedback about what they enjoyed about the writing. This is not a class to teach writing or to critique. All voices are important.

FAMILY SHELTER WINTER HOLIDAY UPDATE

We are excited to let you know that all the gifts have been purchased from the wish list for the children!  What a joyful holiday it will be for them all.  THANK YOU!

Here's an update on some of the other traditions that we are hoping to revive post-pandemic.  Unfortunately, the lingering threat of Covid, plus the particularly difficult flu season that's underway, means our efforts will remain pared back for 2022.  

Gift wrapping: will be handled by shelter staff this year

Holiday party:  not possible this year

Cookie brigade:  like last year, the shelter can only accept store-bought, packaged cookies.  You can drop these off any time (7 am - 7 pm) between Friday, December 16 - Wednesday, December 28.  

Gifts for the adults:  the parents and other caregivers living at the shelter also appreciate being remembered during the holidays.  As in the past, we hope you will consider a gift of cologne or other self-care item for the moms and dads.  We've set up a list on Amazon, but you should feel free to purchase anywhere.  There are approximately 85 adults, about 65 of whom are women.

We're collecting books for the Brooklyn Book Bodega (www.brooklynbookbodega.org), an organization that gives books to families who don’t have enough in order to improve kids’ reading so they can learn and succeed.

All money raised will be used to fund the following programs:  

-Youth programs including after-school, weekend clubs, summer activities, women empowerment including Info-workshops, conversation partner classes, craft classes and our digital literacy program.

-Also funding will be our farm stand, open to all distributions of food, home deliveries for seniors, support for domestic-violence victims, single-moms and low -income families, warm-clothing, school supplies and our holiday distribution. 

Suggested donation will be $50 each which includes a delicious sampling of Jalsa’s incredible cuisine.
