About Kensington Dog Run
The
Kensington Dog Run, located on Coney Island Avenue in the Parade Ground
near Prospect Park, opened in July 2020 after years of community
advocacy. It was a much anticipated event and was particularly important
because it became a place for people and dogs to reconnect and form a
much needed sense of community.
Since opening, the Kensington Dog Run
Association (KDRA) has held community building events and fundraisers to
support the maintenance and upkeep of the dog run. People travel by
foot, bike, car and taxi to socialize their dogs. As a result, there is a
constant stream of dogs and owners visiting each day, and the number
continues to grow.
KDRA
is also growing. Volunteers dedicate their personal time for daily
upkeep and event planning, as well as outreach to improve the
accessibility and functionality of the run for humans and dogs with
disabilities.
Our Spring Clean Up event helped raise funds to purchase
sun shades, which are desperately needed for people and dogs who need to
cool off or cannot be in the sun too long. But
regardless of whether a dog owner “officially” joins the association, we
have found that people have been increasingly inclined to help out
with needed cleaning and repairs.
The Kensington Dog Run has become a vital gathering space for our community, where dogs and their owners can enjoy safe and responsible off-leash activities. The association remains dedicated to serving Kensington and its neighboring communities by organizing and advocating for the continued success of the dog run.
