LANDLORD ACCOUNTABILITY ACT OF 2016 INTRODUCED

Landlord Accountability Act of 2016
Wednesday, November 2nd, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

At the next meeting of Community Board 7's Housing Committee, Representative Nydia Velazquez’ office will give a presentation on legislation that she is sponsoring: Landlord Accountability Act of 2016. The meeting is open to the public.

The act would address issues regarding the Housing Choice Voucher Program (also known as Section 8) and harassment by landlords of their tenants. The voucher program provides assistance to very low-income families so that they can afford to live in decent, safe, and sanitary housing.

From the
Landlord Accountability Act of 2016:
This bill amends the Fair Housing Act to make it unlawful to discriminate in connection with the rental of a dwelling because the current or prospective tenant holds a housing voucher for rental assistance under section 8 of the United States Housing Act of 1937.

An owner of a dwelling unit available for rental may not take any action, or fail to take any action, with the intent to make the unit insufficiently decent, safe, sanitary, or inhabitable so that the dwelling fails to qualify for assistance within the jurisdiction of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
