The musical comedy-drama is based on Sholem Aleichem's series of short stories about Tevya the Dairyman, published in 1894. The film version of the short stories is set in anti-Semitic Czarist Russia in 1905. It explores the life of a poor Jewish family with several marriageable, strong-willed daughters.
The G-rated movie, released in 1971, won three Academy Awards and two Golden Globes.
