SUSPENSION OF ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING EXTENDED

Alternate side of the street parking regulations--normally in effect on weekdays and Saturdays so that streets can be cleaned--will be suspended on Friday, February 10th, and Saturday, February 11th, for snow removal.

Parking meter regulations and all other parking regulations will be in effect.

"CHURCH AVENUE SESSIONS": NEW MONTHLY MUSIC SERIES AT FLATBUSH JEWISH CENTER

Church Avenue Sessions

7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

A new monthly music series will get underway in Kensington next month. Guitarist and composer Yoshie Fruchter has created a series called Church Avenue Sessions, hosted by the Flatbush Jewish Center. The sessions will showcase Brooklyn-based musicians playing in all genres.

The cost of admission is $15. People of all ages are welcome to attend.

Two Kensington bands will kick off the series, Who is Manny Blanc? and The Xylopholks.

Klezmatics clarinetist Matt Darriau leads Who is Manny Blanc? in playing jazz-tinged klezmer music. In addition to reeds, band members play trombone, guitar, marimba, harmonica, bass, keyboards, and drums. Yoshie Fruchter, who performed at Flatbush Jewish Center a week ago, is on guitar.

The Xylopholks plays ragtime and jazz from the Roaring 20s, with Jon Singer on xylophone and other band members on banjo, bass, upright bass, and drums. And they dress in furry animal costumes (and sometimes fruit) when they play!

POSTCARD PROTEST NUMBER TWO AT BROOKLYN COMMUNE

Thursday, February 16th, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Tuesday is Thursday next week in Windsor Terrace. Join like-minded neighbors at Brooklyn Commune on Thursday, February 16th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., for Resist Trump "Tuesday."

At this second postcard protest writing party, folks will write postcards to the White House, senators, members of Congress, and members of the committees that approve nominees before the Senate votes on confirming them.

A $2 donation will be requested to reimburse the organizer for postcards and stamps. Any money that's left over will be donated to the ACLU.

Or, if you'd rather, you can bring postcards and stamps with you, along with return address labels or an address stamp to save yourself some writing.

Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages can be purchased at the restaurant, or you can bring your own.

Suggestions about an action to focus on at the following writing party are welcome. Tell the organizer.

A snowstorm is predicted for tomorrow, February 9th, and the New York City Department of Education has announced that all public schools will be closed.

A DOUBLE MUSIC FESTIVAL AT P.S. 130--TWICE THE MUSIC

P.S. 130 Music Festival Celebration Weekend

P.S. 130 celebrates diversity and community twice this weekend at its 3rd annual music festival.

The Friday evening concert--the P.S. 130 PTA's festival concert--is a community celebration that features P.S. 130 parent musicians. Musical styles will range from Appalachian to Latin, traditional Bengali song to rock, jazz to R&B, and classical to musical theater to Irish, according to Kim Smith, Public Relations.

The concert on Saturday morning--Transcendence featuring master drummer/educator Jaimeo Brown and producer/guitarist Chris Sholar--is an interactive workshop/performance in celebration of Black History Month.

The festival is free, and it is open to the public. Donations will be gratefully accepted and will be used by the PTA to benefit P.S. 130's music programs.

Postcards with political messages will be delivered to several senators and members of Congress this week, sent by dozens of Windsor Terrace and Kensington residents.

People from the two neighborhoods gathered at Brooklyn Commune last night for the first postcard protest writing party. The 500 postcards that they collectively composed will be delivered to the Post Office today.

The subject matter ranged from the Supreme Court nominee to cabinet nominees to Steve Bannon's presence on the National Security Council to preserving the Environmental Protection Agency and the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

The date and time for the next writing party haven't been set yet, but that will be announced soon.

MAN ARMED WITH BOLT CUTTER MENACES TENANTS

Armed with a bolt cutter, the man pictured above menaced tenants as he tried to gain entry to 483 Ocean Parkway. A full hour after the tenants reported the incident, officers from the 66th Precinct arrived.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM WITH NEW YORK ITALIANS

New York Italians: After School Spring 2017

Thursday, March 2nd through Thursday, June 22nd,

2:40 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

New York Italians offers a connection between language acquisition and the creative process through the integration of art and play. Its after school program is a place where children from six to ten years old have fun while learning Italian.

The afternoon's activities start with free play, followed by a healthy snack, an art, music, singing, yoga/dance, or science enrichment activity, and story time.

The weekly program runs from Thursday, March 2nd, through Thursday, June 22nd, from 2:40 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. It's closed on April 13th for spring recess and on June 8th for Anniversary Day.

The available programs and their fees are

• Full fifteen-week session: $400
• Extended care, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.: $10 per hour
• Half session A, March 2nd through April 27th: $200

SOUTH ASIAN YOUTH ACTION BRINGS ITS PROGRAMS TO THE KENSINGTON LIBRARY

Students in grades 9 through 12 are invited to meet the staff of South Asian Youth Action (SAYA) and hear about its free programs.

The Mayor’s Preliminary Fiscal Year 2018 Capital and Expense Budget has been issued. The decisions that were made on whether to approve or reject each of Community Board 7 (CB 7)'s budget requests are indicated in that preliminary budget.

CB 7 will hold a Public Hearing about its response to those decisions on Wednesday, February 15th, at 6:00 p.m.

For Valentine's Day, donate a heart in the name of your pet, a pet you used to have, a friend's or neighbor's or family member's pet, or a pet at Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR). 

Donate $5.00 for a Valentine's Day heart that is handmade by Immaculate Heart of Mary Girl Scout Troop 2700. Tell SCAR the name of the pet, and SCAR will put a heart with the pet's name on it on the front window of the shelter.

You can pay for the heart through PayPal ("Sean Casey Animal Rescue") with either a PayPal account, a credit card, or a debit card.

You can also pay in person at the shelter. Sean Casey Animal Rescue is open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day.

Brooklyn Children's Theatre at P.S. 130 will present two musical theatre performances on Friday, February 3rd, at 6:00 p.m. First and second graders will perform "Garfield’s Big Day," and third through fifth graders will perform "Grief at the Reef."

The suggested ticket price of $5 will benefit the P.S. 130 School Fund.

Brooklyn Children’s Theatre Inc. provides youth with a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment to discover and hone their talents and life skills through the collaborative art of musical theatre.

In the on-site after school program at the P.S. 130 Lower School, musical theatre classes lead to a fully-produced performance of an original musical.

Community Board 12 now publishes a newsletter, "The Boardroom: Brooklyn Community Board 12." The monthly newsletter will contain facts about the borough, the board, and the community. 

The first issue of the newsletter is available today; to read it, click on the Photos tab on the Board's Facebook page.

To be added to the newsletter mailing list, contact the board office by phone at (718) 851-0800 or by e-mail at bkcb12 @ gmail.com. 

A copy of the newsletter will be posted on CB 12's website, when possible, along with a form so that people can sign up for the mailing list. Printed copies of the newsletter will also be available in their office and at board meetings.

If you have suggestions for further issues, pass them along to the board.

Community Board 12 represents Kensington, Dahill, Borough Park, and Midwood.

Meetings of Community Board 12 are open to the public. They are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except during July and August, at Amico Senior Center, 5901 13th Avenue, at the corner of 59th Street, on the 3rd floor. The entrance is on 59th Street. The building has an elevator.
