DETOUR THROUGH WINDSOR TERRACE NEXT WEEKEND DURING BQE CLOSURE

Repair and replacement work on the BQE will cause traffic to be diverted in various parts of Brooklyn next weekend.

But thanks to the preemptive activism of neighborhood residents, Community Boards 7, 12, and 14, Assemblymember Robert Carroll, and City Councilmembers Shahana Hanif and Rita Joseph, the New York City Department of  (NYC DOT) has altered its detour routes during the repairs.

The original plan would have dumped every southbound car and truck, no matter how large, onto E. 5th Street at Greenwood Avenue, have them travel two blocks on E. 5th, and then have them turn onto Caton Avenue to get to Linden Boulevard.

Instead, traffic will exit onto 10th Avenue, turn onto McDonald Avenue, and then turn onto Caton Avenue to get to Linden Boulevard.

NYC DOT will announce any future work requiring closures at a later date.

From Assemblymember Robert Carroll:

BQE Closure

The NYC DOT has alerted my office to the details of the upcoming BQE closure next weekend. The closure will be from 2 AM Saturday, October 14th to 4 AM Monday, October 16th.

Windsor Terrace and Kensington will be affected, with all eastbound traffic being directed through Prospect Expressway.

Trucks will be directed to the 10th Avenue exit, and then rerouted onto McDonald Ave through to Caton, so be prepared for heavy additional traffic along that route.

My office has been in contact with the 72nd Precinct to ensure that traffic safety will be properly enforced throughout this time.

The Hamilton Avenue Eastbound entrance to the BQE will also be closed, meaning that westbound traffic will need to exit at Ft. Hamilton Parkway.
Driving instructions from the NYC DOT:
Queens-Bound Linden Boulevard Detour
  • Exit Gowanus Expressway at Prospect Expressway
  • Exit at 10 Avenue
  • Turn right onto 10 Avenue
  • Turn left onto McDonald Avenue
  • Turn left onto Caton Avenue
  • Continue onto Linden Boulevard
  • Detour routes to Conduit Avenue with connections to Nassau Expressway, Van Wyck Expressway, and the Long Island Expressway via the Van Wyck Expressway

NEW TRAFFIC SIGN

A new "No Turns" sign prohibits left turns from Fort Hamilton Parkway onto E. 5th Street. Right turns are already prohibited because traffic on E. 5th Street runs one-way, north to south.

STREET-BY-STREET PARKING REGULATIONS ONLINE

A searchable database on the New York City Department of Transportation’s website lists the parking regulations for both sides of every street in all five boroughs. The regulations are on signs that read, for example, "No Parking," "No Parking Anytime," "1 Hour Parking 8:30AM-7PM Except Sunday," and "Bus Stop." The website also provides a detailed description of the meaning of each sign.

To use the database, choose a borough from the drop-down menu, type in the street name (abbreviations are acceptable), click "Get Cross Streets," choose a cross-street from the drop-down menu, choose the other cross-street from the drop-down menu, click "Search," and scroll down the page.

Data is updated six days a week, Mondays through Saturdays. The information is taken from the New York City Department of Transportation’s sign database.

TRAFFIC CALMING ON BEVERLEY ROAD

In early June, City Councilmember Brad Lander reported that the Department of Transportation would be working on several projects in Kensington this summer.

Currently,
on Beverley Road, between Church Avenue and E. 2nd Street, traffic calming measures are being put into place to make the street safer for pedestrians and drivers. These measures include
  • narrowing the street by widening the sidewalks and creating bulb-outs,
  • restriping the crosswalks,
  • adding stop bars and other pavement markings, and
  • improving signal timing.
A bulb-out widens the curb and the sidewalk. A stop bar is the solid white line where cars are required to stop before reaching a stop sign.

SAFER KENSINGTON STREETS

From our New York City Councilmember, Brad Lander:

Dear Kensington resident,

I've heard from many a number of you about dangerous intersections in the neighborhood -- especially Church Avenue at both McDonald Avenue and Ocean Parkway.

So I am very happy to report on some good news we've received from the NYC Department of Transportation about projects that are taking place this summer:

1. Church Avenue is being repaved, from Old New Utrecht Road to Coney Island Avenue.

2. Church Avenue and McDonald Avenue:
  • Installation of new bus shelters on both sides of Church Avenue
  • Installation of bulb-outs and pedestrian ramps
3. Beverly Road, between Church Avenue and E. 2nd Street:
  • Narrow Beverly Road with wider sidewalks and bulb-outs
  • Restripe crosswalks, stop bars and other pavement markings
  • Improve signal timing
4. Ocean Parkway and Church Avenue:
  • Raised pedestrian refuge island and median extension
  • New pedestrian signals
  • New pavement markings to discourage illegal left turns from the southbound service road
  • Upgrade No Turn signs
  • "Yield to Pedestrian" signs at all approaches
  • Restriping of crosswalks, stopbars and other pavement markings
  • Improve Signal timing and offset changes

Click here for a full copy of the work DOT is doing at key Church Avenue intersections. Thanks to everyone who contacted my office about this issue. Please keep me updated on whether the improvements are making a difference. And don't hesitate to be in touch with any future observations or concerns about your neighborhood.

CHURCH AVENUE TO BE ONE-WAY?

"Hoots and hollers were the order of the day as East Flatbush residents and merchants made it clear that they did not want to see Church Avenue turned into a one-way street. DOT plans to return to the community for further discussion in October."
