CELEBRATE KENSINGTON! (FREE)

 
Celebrate Kensington!
Saturday, July 25th
1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
 

Join NOCD-NY, Arts & Democracy, Kensington Cultural Council and

community partners for a celebration of our neighborhood’s rich culture and the close-knit network of people who cultivate it!

Avenue C Plaza will feature:


  • 1pm: Music Jam with local musicians including Yoshie Fruchter, Nilofar Jahan, Naqibul Islam, Roy Nathanson, Shai Wetzer, and Brian Drye

  • 2:30pm: Embroidery and Storytelling with author Roohi Choudhry, Farida Ruhul and Casa Cultural, including readings from Candace Hall, Asia Begum, Nurun Nahar, Roy Nathanson, Ienna Dela Torre, and Diya Abbass

  • 4pm: Performance with Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts (BIPA)


Ongoing:


  • Exhibitions including How to Create Kensington Culture and Bangladeshi Ladies Club’s Nakshi Kantha display

  • Kantha and Mexican embroidery, with Farida Ruhul and Casa Cultural

  • Youth-led Mural Making

  • Engagement with community groups and initiatives including DRUM, Sakhi, Kensington-Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid, Windsor Terrace Food Coop, Department of City Planning South of Prospect Park Neighborhood Plan, Fifth Avenue Committee, and Mixteca


Kensington Plaza with The Singing Winds presents:


  • 2:00 - 7:00pm: Crafts Market, featuring hand-made toys and jewelry

  • 5:30 - 7:00pm: Music on the Plaza with Kalimba Unity,
    Led by Kevin Nathaniel, the ensemble features kalimbas, flute and percussion.

This event is presented by Arts & Democracy and Naturally Occurring Cultural Districts NY (NOCD-NY), in collaboration with the Kensington Cultural Council.

WEATHER UPDATE FOR THIS WEEKEND'S FREE EVENTS AT AVENUE C PLAZA

From Naturally Occurring Cultural Districts NY (NOCD-NY): 
Final week of June programming at Avenue C Plaza!
 
Due to weather, ArtBuilt and partners have made some adjustments to the weekend schedule at Avenue C Plaza!
 
Depending on the rain forecast in the morning, Saturday's Kite Making and Flying with The Singing Winds may be swapped with Mosaics on Sunday. Come for both in any case!
 
Unfortunately, Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts (BIPA) Folk Performance with Bangladeshi Ladies Club Kantha Display has been cancelled, but BIPA will be performing at Celebrate Kensington on Saturday, July 25th. Save the date and stay tuned for more details at kensingtonculture.org!
 
Visit kensingtonculture.org for remaining Kensington Culture @ Avenue C Plaza activities in June. The website includes events throughout the year supported by the Kensington Cultural Council and partners!

SUMMER AT AVENUE C PLAZA BEGINS

Summer at Avenue C Plaza begins! 

Join ArtBuilt Mobile Studio and community partners for Kensington Culture programming in June, starting with their Summer Program Launch this Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts (BIPA). 

A series of weekly dance, embroidery, language, music, and art activities also begin next week. Be on the lookout for the month's calendar soon!

Join a celebration of Kensington's food, music, and textiles and the close-knit network of people who make them happen.
 
"Celebrate Kensington! Culture + Community + Care" will take place on Sunday, June 30th, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Avenue C Plaza.
 
 
The day's events: 
 
Celebrate the culmination of a year-long community research project about Kensington’s culture and cultural networks with a free full-color printed booklet (while supplies last) and poster display.
 
For all ages. Open to all.

LEARN NAKSHI KATHA EMBROIDERY (FREE, OUTDOORS)

 


Nakshi Katha Embroidery
Friday, June 10th, 17th, and 24th, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Learn Nakshi Katha with the Bangladeshi Ladies Club. Make a Nakshi Katha (embroidered quilt) with a traditional running stitch.

Sessions will take place on Friday, June 10th, 17th, and 24th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Attend either one, two, or all three of the free guided sessions.

Nakshi Katha is a traditional embroidery art of rural Bangladesh. For a detailed explanation of it, see Banglapedia's entry for Nakshi Kantha.
