 Alternate side of the street parking (street cleaning) regulations will be suspended on Tuesday, November 3rd, for Election Day.

All other parking regulations, including those for parking meters, will remain in effect.

 

Parking meter regulations are only suspended on these major legal holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Kensington Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid Celebrates at Prospect Park Gathering.

"I think it's pretty impressive," said one attendee at the  Kensington Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid gathering in Prospect Park earlier this month. "We've raised over $90,000 in less than seven months!" The all-volunteer mutual aid group has been supplying groceries and emergency cash stipends to neighbors hard hit by the pandemic and making deliveries to individuals unable to leave home.

At the Prospect Park gathering, some KWTMA members were meeting in person for the first time. The group has been organizing remotely on Zoom since the onset of the pandemic, with as many as “a couple of hundred” area residents contributing in various ways over time. “It was funny,” observed Lorraine Le Tac afterwards, “now that we were meeting for real, we could only see half of our faces, because of our masks!”

KWTMA emphasizes that the neighborhood crisis is far from over. Neighbors wait many weeks to get grocery support and months to get cash grants. “People are struggling to pay their rent, put food on the table, all while worrying about childcare and getting sick,” says Sofya Aptekar, making the observation that the pandemic “has hit us in different ways, reflecting the deep inequalities across NYC.”

Sunday's gathering, however, was a time for celebration and community building. Attendees ranged in age from preteen to mid-fifties. Longtime residents were joined by volunteers who moved to the area two months ago. There were treats, guitar music and a dog. "Seeing people come together like this is powerful," said Adam Wilson, one of several event organizers.

OCEAN PARKWAY CLEANUP: COMMUNITY RESIDENTS NEEDED

 

Ocean Parkway Community Cleanup

Sunday, October 25th, 10:00 a.m. to noon

The next community cleanup of beautiful, historic Ocean Parkway will take place on Sunday, October 25th, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

 

The Kensington Stewards (TKS) and the Albemarle Neighborhood Association (ANA) are co-sponsoring the cleanup and will provide the supplies.

After meeting on the east side of the intersection of Ocean Parkway and Beverley Road (the side of Ocean Parkway that's closer to E. 7th Street) at 10:00 a.m., volunteers will clean up the east side of Ocean Parkway between Beverley Road and Avenue C. Join them at any time between 10:00 a.m. and noon.

 

Wear a mask, and be mindful of social distancing.

Launched on March 19th, 2020, KWT Mutual Aid is a volunteer organization created by neighbors for neighbors, with the objective of helping our community cope with the physical, mental, emotional, and economic hardships created by the COVID-19 crisis.

The idea is simple: showing solidarity through our actions. Neighbors helping neighbors by pooling resources and supporting each others' needs.

Our neighborhoods include immigrant communities that are often denied financial support from the city, state, and federal government, neighbors who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic and those living in vulnerable situations.

KWT Mutual Aid partners with local groups, organizations, and volunteers to meet needs, from grocery shopping and delivery, to prescription pick-ups, well-being phone check-ins, support and guidance accessing government benefits, and providing emergency funds.

LEAF DROP-OFF AT EAST 4TH STREET COMMUNITY GARDEN

The East 4th Street Community Garden is having its annual fall leaf drive, starting tomorrow (Wednesday, October 21st) and running through Saturday, November 21st.

 

Drop off your leaves in clear plastic bags or paper bags on Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

 

The leaves will be used for composting operations. Woody plant matter, roots, and litter can't be accepted.

Fang-tastic Halloween Online Raffle for Sean Casey Animal Rescue

The annual Howl-O-Ween Bark Block Party fund raiser for Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR) has taken place for twelve years in a row. But this year, SCAR is having an online raffle instead.

More than seventy wonderful prizes are up for grabs: vacations, goodie baskets, original artwork, electronics, a variety of gift certificates, jewelry, games, kitchenware and other household items, and many other gifts for people of all ages and for their animal companions.

 

The random drawing for the prizes will take place on Sunday, October 25th at 6:00 p.m. Everyone who participates will be notified about the outcome. Many of the prizes will be mailed or e-mailed to the winners, and others will be picked up at SCAR at 153 East 3rd Street, Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn. 

The proceeds will benefit SCAR's Critical Care Program for sick and injured animals as well as the daily needs of the shelter and its occupants.

Dr. Maya Angelou's words inspired the quilters: “Be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.” The quilts incorporate the colors of the rainbow.

Halloween Mask-erade: A Kensington Dog Run Meet-and-Greet

At the meeting, the public can report crimes in Kensington, Borough Park, and Midwood as well as any policing matters.

The 66th Precinct's commanding officer, Deputy Inspector James King, will update residents on recent crimes in those neighborhoods, but the input of people who live within the boundaries of the precinct is essential.

 

The purpose of the 66th Precinct Community Council is to provide the critical interface between citizens and police through regular monthly meetings. Meetings are normally held monthly from September through June.
