As you embark on a long relationship with your eight-week-old to five-month-old puppy, you can both benefit from working together in Puppy Kindergarten. Socialization and puppy play, house training, handling, coming when called, nipping and jumping, polite leash walking, basic manners (sit, down, stay), and safety concerns (drop it, leave it) will all be covered. The Wednesday session starts on October 14th at 7:00 p.m., the Saturday session on October 17th at 10:30 a.m., and the Sunday session on October 18th at 5:00 p.m. Each session lasts for six weeks and costs $300. Classes are located in Windsor Terrace/Kensington close to the F/G subway lines. To sign up (or to ask questions), send an e-mail to 2BDogTraining @ gmail.com.
Speeding has been an ongoing problem on many streets in Windsor Terrace. To increase pedestrian,
bicyclist, and driver safety, drivers need to slow down. Speed humps (NOT bumps) are one of the traffic-calming methods often used to resolve the problem. A
"speed hump" isn't a bump. It's a gradual rise in the road, designed to slow vehicles down to between fifteen and twenty miles per hour. The hump is three to
four inches high and up to twenty feet long.
Community Board 7's Transportation Committee met in August to consider a request for fifteen
additional speed humps
for Windsor Terrace, but the committee didn't reach a decision. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for October 13th. The meeting is open to the public. Residents will have the opportunity to voice their opinions to committee members about the proposed speed humps. When
the committee reaches a decision, it will make a recommendation to the
full Community Board. If the board votes in favor of the humps, the New
York City Department of Transportation will install them.
If approved, the speed humps will be located at
Vanderbilt Street between Prospect Park Southwest and McDonald Avenue (3),
Seeley Street between Prospect Park Southwest and McDonald Avenue (3),
Terrace Place between Prospect Park Southwest and Prospect Avenue(2),
Windsor Place between 11th Avenue and Terrace Place (2),
19th Street between Vanderbilt Avenue and Seeley Street,
18th Street between Terrace Place and Seeley Street,
Sherman Street between 11th Avenue and Terrace Place,
Prospect Avenue between Seeley Street and Vanderbilt Street, and
Kermit Place between Caton Place and Caton Avenue.
Sign a petition to Community Board 7 to encourage its members to vote in favor of the speed humps.

Lego Masterbuilder Class Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to noon September 27th through December 20th
This fall, Eleanor Rogers' "Kensintonlegoclass" will run two regular Lego classes: the
Sunday "Masterbuilder" class and a Monday after-school class for kindergartners and 1st graders at P.S. 130
as part of the Wingspan Arts program. Classes at Lark Cafe will likely
restart in late October.
The Sunday class will meet in Eleanor's apartment on Albemarle Road
at E. 5th Street from 10:30 a.m. to noon. She's targeting it for 2nd and 3rd
graders--and possibly younger or older students, if the class is a good
fit for them. The class will start on September 27th and continue every
Sunday through December 20th, with the exception of November 29th
(Thanksgiving weekend).
The cost for the full 12 classes is $220. It's also possible to sign up for a smaller number of classes, based on their availability.
The themes will be Pirates, Wizard's Tower, and Outer Space. The class
will build large detailed sailing ships, islands, towers, foreboding
gateways, bone cages, moonlanders, Mars rovers, alien spaceships,
planets, and more.
General description of the classes
One of the joys of Lego is that everyone plays with it differently. In
these classes, Eleanor will incorporate what she sees as the three main
areas of Lego play: structured building (following preset instructions),
free building, and imaginative play.
The classes have a free-flowing
structure that allows the kids to lead the direction of the project as
it continues. Builds will be kept and developed from week to week. At
the end of each theme, the students will take some smaller builds home
with them.

"Wonderama" host Sonny Fox will be visiting P.S. 217 next month to host "Broadway to Brooklyn." Fox, born in Brooklyn in 1925, attended the school in the 1930s. (Coincidentally, P.S. 217 opened the year that Fox was born.)
Fox served as the host of several iconic children's shows on Channel 5 (WNEW-TV) in the 1950s and 1960s:
"Wonderama," an award-winning, four-hour show on Sunday mornings that he hosted from 1959 to 1967, and "Just for Fun," which broadcast for two-and-a-half hours on Saturday mornings from 1959 to 1965.
Fox
will regale listeners with interesting stories and personal
recollections about some of the
great composers and lyricists of the 20th century and the Broadway songs
or film scores they created that are so familiar to many.
To bring these stories
to life, he will show excerpts from "The Songwriters," the series he
produced for CBS Cable in 1982. Featured profiles include Alan Jay Lerner,
Kander and Ebb, Sheldon Harnick, Yip Harburg, Arthur Schwartz, Charles
Strouse, and Burton Lane.
Last year, Fox published his book But You Made the Front
Page: Wonderama, War, and a Whole Bunch of Life. The title comes from a comment his mother made in 1977 when she read in the New York Post that her son had been laid off from his job as vice-president of children’s programming at NBC.
"I was staring balefully at the headline when my assistant said, 'Your
mother’s on the phone.' I said, 'Ma, I got fired.' She said, 'Yeah, but
you made the front page!'"
The fund raiser is for Friends of
P.S. 217, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit that raises money for the school's arts programs. Impressed by the arts programs that the school offers to its
students, Fox volunteered to do a fund raiser to support these
programs.
Tickets to the performance cost $25 each. A limited number of VIP
tickets will be available for $100 each; they include a private reception
with Fox before the show and a signed copy of But You Made
the Front Page. Purchase tickets by using the form at http://fo217.org/events.
