The 72nd Precinct has reported an uptick in the theft of catalytic converters in Sector A. Sector A, represented in purple in the map posted above, includes Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights, and South Slope.
Part of a car's exhaust system, a catalytic converter is an emissions-control device that contains precious metals, which act as catalysts. Thieves steal the converters for the metals--platinum, palladium, or rhodium. Their monetary value is higher than that of gold; depending on the specific cars they're stolen from, thieves can sell them for $300 to $1,500 each. The "cats" in hybrid cars have a greater amount of precious metals in them.
