A state senator from Suffolk County is sponsoring legislation that would decide which of our teachers keep their jobs and which ones get laid off.
New York State Senate bill S3501B-2011--sponsored by John J. Flanagan, who represents the Town of Smithtown and portions of the towns of Brookhaven and Huntington--applies ONLY to cities with a population of one million or more. Our city is the ONLY one in the state with that many people.
Mayor Bloomberg, who supports the bill, is talking about laying off more than 7,300 teachers--almost 10% of the total number of teachers--even as class sizes keep growing.
- At P.S. 130, The Parkside School, 1 of its 40 teachers (3%) might get laid off.
- At P.S. 230, Doris L. Cohen, 7 of its 93 teachers (8%) might get laid off.
- At P.S. 179, Kensington, 3 of its 67 teachers (4%) might get laid off.
- etc., etc., etc.
