ALTERNATE SIDE AND METER RULES FOR THURSDAY AND FRIDAY

Alternate side of the street parking regulations for street cleaning, which had already been suspended for Thursday, November 1st, for All Saints Day, will also be suspended on Friday, November 2nd.

However, all parking meter regulations will be reinstated starting Thursday, and all other parking regulations remain in effect.

SCHOOL CLOSING TO CONTINUE POST-HURRICANE SANDY

Due to the conditions created by Hurricane Sandy, all New York City public schools will be closed to students on Thursday, November 1st, and Friday, November 2nd. All after-school activities and Public Schools Athletic League events will also be cancelled.

Schools will reopen on Monday, November 5th.

RECYCLE YOUR FALL LEAVES AT THE EAST FOURTH STREET COMMUNITY GARDEN

Recycle your fall leaves

at the East Fourth Street Community Garden.

Because of budget cuts, the Sanitation Department's leaf composting collection program is suspended again this year. The leaves that the department collects at curbside will be treated as regular household trash.But this precious resource doesn't have to be wasted: the leaves can be kept out of landfills and recycled to create compost instead.

The East Fourth Street Community Garden is working with Project LeafDrop of NYCLeaves to recycle the leaves to improve the soil in local greening projects. For more information, see http://nycleaves.org.

Put your leaves in clear plastic bags or brown paper bags and bring them to the Garden. Bring leaves from residences only, and please don't bring branches, twigs, or trash.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced when limited subway, Metro North, and LIRR service will resume.

The following is an up-to-date service status list of the MTA operating agencies including New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North and Bridges and Tunnels.


NYCT SUBWAY SERVICE:
EFFECTIVE TOMORROW MORNING PRIOR TO RUSH HOUR

1 trains will operate local between 242^nd Street (Bronx) and Times Square-42^nd Street.

2 trains will operate between 241^st Street (Bronx) and Times Square-42^nd Street, with express service between 96^th Street and Times Square.

3 trains are suspended.

4 trains will operate in two sections making all local stops:

· Between Woodlawn (Bronx) and Grand Central-42^nd Street
· Between Borough Hall and New Lots Avenue

5 trains will operate express in Brooklyn between Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center and Flatbush Avenue.

6 trains will operate local between Pelham Bay Park and Grand Central-42^nd Street.

POST-HURRICANE SANDY TRANSPORTATION AND OTHER ISSUES

Parking: alternate side of the street parking regulations and parking meters are suspended Wednesday.

Tunnels: seven tunnels underneath the East River were flooded, affecting the 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, L, A, C, and F subway lines.

Buses: Partial MTA bus service will resume today (Tuesday) at 5:00 p.m. Buses will operate on a fare-free basis and on a Sunday schedule. A full schedule is expected for Wednesday. Rides will continue to be fare-free. These Brooklyn bus lines are operating as of 5:00 p.m.: B1, B3, B15, B35, B41, B44, B46, B61, B82, Q58, Q59. The Brooklyn bus map illustrates where these lines operate.

Bridges: the East River bridges reopened at 2:00 p.m.

MTA Bridges: All MTA bridges except the ones in the Rockaways are open. 

Driving and walking: Avoid driving and walking as much as possible. Fallen trees may be blocking streets. Flying debris is a danger. 

Electricity: Con Edison estimates that customers in Brooklyn and Manhattan served by underground electric equipment should have power back within four days. Restoration to all customers in other areas served by overhead power lines will take at least a week. 

Schools: New York City public schools and charter schools will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, October 31st, along with all CUNY schools.

Halloween Parades: the Park Slope Civic Council has cancelled tomorrow night's annual Halloween Parade; this event will not be rescheduled. The Prospect Park South parade has also been canceled.

Parks: New York City public parks will be closed until further notice.

Playgrounds: New York City playgrounds will be closed until further notice.

Beaches: New York City beaches will be closed until further notice.

Recreation centers: New York City recreation centers will be closed until further notice.

Fallen trees: report fallen trees and sewer backups to 311 Online, text 311 at 311-692, or call 311.

Water: New York City's drinking water is safe. 

911: Only call 911 in an emergency.

311: when you call 311 for a non-emergency situation, hang on until someone answers.

SOME BUSES WILL ROLL TODAY

MORE CLOSINGS DUE TO HURRICANE SANDY

Schools: Public schools and CUNY schools will be closed on Tuesday.

Parking: Alternate side of the street parking regulations are suspended citywide on Tuesday. Payment at parking meters is also suspended throughout the city tomorrow.

Trash collection: The Sanitation Department will be on twelve-hour shifts (7:00 a.m.  to 7:00 p.m.) on Tuesday. Put trash and recycling out on Tuesday morning so that cans don't get blown around by the wind.

New Jersey Transit: All New Jersey Transit rail bus, light rail, and Access Link service is shut down.

Tunnels: The Holland Tunnel and Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel will closed at 2:00 p.m. today.

HURRICANE SANDY-RELATED CLOSINGS

If you see or have problems, fill out the Hurricane Sandy Report Form to let City Councilmember Brad Lander's staff know about outdoors problems caused by the storm, such as hanging or fallen tree limbs, clogged storm drains, and so on.

Power outages: Report any power outages to Con Ed at (800) 75-CONED.

Trash collection:  DSNY will collect trash and recycling on Monday if storm conditions allow it. See nyc.gov/sanitation for updates.

MTA: The subways, buses, and commuter rails have already been shut down. How long service will be suspended for isn't known. How long it'll take to restore service after the suspension ends also isn't known.

PATH: PATH train service and stations will be shut down at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, October 29th, until further notice.

Amtrak: Amtrak shut down Northeast Corridor service north of New York as of 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. It has canceled nearly all service on the eastern seaboard on Monday.

Parking: Alternate side of the street parking regulations and rules for parking meters and muni-meters will be suspended on Monday.

Driving: Stay off the road as much as possible because conditions may become dangerous and trees may be lying in the road. 

Schools: Public schools are closed on Monday. CUNY schools are closed on Monday. 

Libraries: All three public library systems will be closed on Monday.

Senior centers: Senior centers will be closed on Monday and Tuesday. 

Parks: All city parks were closed as of 5:00 p.m. Sunday.

MTA CANCELING ALL SERVICE BECAUSE OF HURRICANE SANDY

Due to expected severe weather conditions, all MTA subway and commuter rails will be suspended citywide as of today, Sunday, October 28th, at 7:00 p.m.

The program is for children of all ages. All participants will receive a free pass to visit the Museum of Modern Art as a family.

Riva Blumenfeld has been a gallery director and owner. She's an art advisor and has a master's degree in art history. She started out as an educator at the Brooklyn Museum. She leads workshops and tours for adults and children in grades K-12 at the Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and 92nd Street YMHA.

MTA TO DECIDE TOMORROW ON SHUTTING DOWN FOR HURRICANE SANDY

The MTA will decide tomorrow if it's going to suspend subway, bus, and commuter railroad service (Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road) tomorrow.  Riders would have to complete their ride by 7:00 p.m. Preparations for the possible shutdown began today.

It's possible that some of the subway may be curtailed over a period of several hours before all service is suspended.

CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS IN ANTICIPATION OF HURRICANE SANDY

Senior centers: Senior centers will close early on Monday. They won't be open at all on Tuesday. Centers are making arrangements for their members to take meals home with them. Extra meals will be delivered to home-bound seniors on Monday. 

Subways: All of the subway service changes that were planned for this weekend have been canceled, except the changes planned for the 7 and the J. Changes to the 7 and the J have been rescheduled through Saturday only. 

Access-A-Ride: Trips are only being scheduled one day in advance of travel for both Saturday, October 27th, and Sunday, October 28th. Rides might be canceled. 

Specialized High Schools Admissions Test: The SHSAT, which was scheduled for Sunday, October 28th, has been rescheduled for Sunday, November 18th. The Saturday, October 27th, test will take place as planned.

COMPOST FOR BROOKLYN CLOSING FOR A WHILE

After Sunday, October 28th, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., don't bring your compost to Compost for Brooklyn. That'll be their last open day for a while as they temporary close for repairs and renovations. While they're closed, bring your compost to Cortelyou Greenmarket on Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Cortelyou Greenmarket is on Cortelyou Road between Argyle and Rugby roads. It's open year-round Or go to any location listed here.

In the spring of 2013, Compost for Brooklyn will reopen. In the meantime, while they're closed, they'll have some needed volunteer workdays. Their website and Facebook page will list the dates and times for workdays.

SAMO LIVES ON FORT HAMILTON PARKWAY

Homage has been paid to Jean-Michel Basquiat, 1960-1988, on a construction fence at the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway and E. 2nd Street in Windsor Terrace.

Basquiat, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, is buried in Green-wood Cemetery, just a few blocks from this corner.

Kensington Community Supporting Justice For Golden Farm Workers is the name of the newly-created blog that supports Golden Farm employees in their long-standing wage, hour, and benefits battle against their employer, Sonny Kim. Mr. Kim is scheduled to sit down with the employees' union next week. The meeting between the employer and the union was mandated by the National Labor Relations Board after it certified the results of the employees' vote in favor of unionizing with Local 338 of the Retail, Wholesale Department Store Union, United Food and Commercial Workers (RWDSU/UFCW).

Albemarle Neighborhood Association Meeting on Sanitation

Thursday, October 25th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The public litter baskets on street corners fill up and overflow too quickly; they're full again the day after they're emptied. People are putting their household garbage in these baskets; they should get ticketed. Businesses are putting their commercial garbage in them; they should get ticketed. The baskets need to be emptied more often. We need more of the litter baskets with the narrow openings that household and commercial garbage can't fit into. More baskets are needed near schools, libraries, and bus stops.

Those are some sanitation issues that residents might like to bring up at Thursday's meeting of the Albemarle Neighborhood Association. The Department of Sanitation will send a representative from its Community Affairs Office to that meeting. Ignazio Terranova will talk about the department's efforts to keep Kensington's sidewalks and streets clean, answer your questions, and listen to your complaints (and compliments).

Other issues the Sanitation Department deals with that you might have questions or comments about are snow removal, recycling, and street cleaning.

The meeting is free. All members of the Albemarle Neighborhood Association (ANA) and all non-members are invited to attend. Foodtown and the ANA will provide refreshments.

The ANA will meet in the 4th floor student lounge at University Place, the student housing building at 385 McDonald Avenue, between Church Avenue and Albemarle Road, across the street from Foodtown. The meeting room is wheelchair-accessible.
