KENSINGTON COMMUNITY LIAISON JOB AVAILABLE IN CITY COUNCILMEMBER SHAHANA HANIF'S OFFICE


New York City Councilmember Shahana Hanif (District 39) has an opening for a part-time job on her team.

Kensington Community Liaison

The Position:
The Kensington Community Liaison, for Shahana Hanif, New York City Council Member for the 39th District, will be the main point of contact for constituents in Kensington. They will work to address problems facing residents and their communities and lead organizing campaigns to uplift issues. Under the supervision of the Chief of Staff, this person will organize community outreach, field constituent requests, and liaise with community leaders and community organizations. This is a part time position of approximately 20-hours a week that will have a joint constituent service & organizing portfolio.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the main point of contact for residents of Kensington, including but not limited to:
    • Conduct weekly in-person outreach to constituents and businesses to promote services and community events provided by the City Council office 
    • Attend Kensington community meetings, including monthly Community Board 12 meetings, and share general updates, as well as often delivering remarks on behalf of the Council Member 
    • Manage the weekly CUNY Citizenship Now! legal clinic our office sponsors with the immigration attorney assigned 
    • Seek out, develop, support, and liaise with community organizations engaged in faith-based, educational, cultural, and organizing programming in Kensington specifically the Kensington Bangladeshi and Muslim community
    • Hold office hours in our satellite office once a week to provide walk-in constituent services to Bangla-speaking constituents 
    • Act as liaison with Bangladeshi youth, women, community leaders, including Community Board members, religious leaders, business owners, and civic association leaders
    • Support organizing across Kensington communities to build bridges and help strengthen the neighborhood

  • Assist with the Council Member’s constituent service caseload including but not limited to:
    • Answer calls, emails, and letters from constituents seeking support and assist in finding the best possible outcome for these constituent problems
    • Liaise with relevant City agencies and/or service providers by phone, email, or letter to address constituent concerns
    • Providing regular updates to constituents and supervisors
    • Maintaining up-to-date records on all cases by ensuring that cases are entered into “CouncilStat,” a Council-wide constituent service database


The ideal candidate will have:
  • Deep knowledge of the Kensington neighborhood in the 39th Council District including diverse community issues and dynamics
  • Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills
  • Superb organizational skills and attention to detail
  • The ability to stay calm in a fast-paced and high pressure political environment
  • A passion for building a leftist and progressive city that works for all
  • Fluency in Bangla required

Salary & Benefits:
  • This is a part-time position

  • The salary range for this position is $20,000- $25,000
