NEW LOCAL AUTHOR DANIEL SCHORR PUBLISHES HIS FIRST NOVEL, "A BRIEF HISTORY OF KATE PARKER"

 author Daniel Schorr

Longtime (thirty-six years) Brooklynite and Kensington/Windsor Terrace resident Daniel Schorr has just released A Brief History of Kate Parker, a debut novel set largely in Kensington and Ditmas Park/Midwood, Brooklyn.

From the author:
A Brief History of Kate Parker is the story of a woman in search of tranquility and belonging.

The reader follows the life of an ordinary American woman, Kate Parker, from her high-school years to her late twenties. Originally from Ohio, her prestigious eastern college completes her transformation into a provisional member of the upper middle class, though her status is menaced by an unsuccessful marriage and her limited income as a public-school teacher.

A symposium given by a wealthy financier who has taken an improbable interest in public education leads to her world being irrevocably altered, but to what degree?

NON-PERISHABLE FOOD NEEDED FOR THE KWT TINY PURPLE PANTRY

To help relieve food insecurity and hunger in the neighborhood, Kensington-Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid (KWTMA) has set up the KWT Tiny Purple Pantry for non-perishable food. Donate food items if you can or take whatever donated items you need so that you can enjoy adequate and nutritious meals.

The outdoor pantry is on E. 4th Street in Windsor Terrace, just south of Fort Hamilton Parkway, alongside Jaya Yoga East.

Non-perishable food has a long shelf life and doesn't have to be refrigerated before it's opened. Some examples of food to donate are
  • fish (canned),
  • poultry (canned),
  • beans (canned and dried),
  • soup (canned and packaged),
  • vegetables (canned and dried),
  • fruit (canned and dried),
  • pasta, rice, and other grains,
  • dried herbs and spices,
  • condiments,
  • nuts and seeds,

  • protein bars.

In addition to the pantry, KWTMA has set up an outdoor KWT Community Fridge. It's for perishable food, and it operates on the same philosophy of "Give what you can; take what you need." The fridge is located at 137 E. 2nd Street, off Fort Hamilton Parkway, next to the laundromat. You can read about it at https://karmabrooklyn.blogspot.com/2021/03/which-food-to-donate-to-community.html.

STOP AAPI (ASIAN AMERICAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER) HATE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND BEYOND

The Asian Affairs Committee and the Public Safety Committee of Community Board 7, which covers Windsor Terrace and Sunset Park, are joining forces to work on the pressing issue of hate crimes against Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders (AAPI).

Anti-AAPI hate crimes, particularly against women and the elderly, have been continually increasing since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic as innocent people are wrongly blamed for the worldwide outbreak of the devastating and sometimes deadly virus.

The joint committee meeting will be open to the public, just as all meetings of every committee of every community board are.

For the past year, all CB 7 board meetings and committee meetings have been held virtually, with access via computers, cell phones, and landline phones.

In addition to being able to attend meetings, people who aren't board members are welcome to become members of any committee of any community board.

If you're interested in joining either of these two committees or any other CB 7 committee, write to the board office at bk07@cb.nyc.gov.

A calendar of all CB 7 board and committee meetings is posted at https://www1.nyc.gov/site/brooklyncb7/calendar/calendar.page.

Additional ways to support the AAPI community at this critical time are posted under "Act Now" on the Stop AAPI Hate website.

Press Release
Green-Wood Cemetery
March 16, 2021

GREEN-WOOD’S ICONIC ARCH TO BE ILLUMINATED IN AMBER LIGHT TO HONOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES TO COVID-19

To honor the lives of the more than 500,000 American souls who lost their lives to COVID-19, The Green-Wood Cemetery has joined with other cultural institutions around the country and illuminated its landmarked Gothic Arch in amber light.

Richard J. Moylan, President of Green-Wood, said, “This has been a year marked by unspeakable sorrow and loss. At Green-Wood, we shared in the grief of too many families who lost loved ones to this insidious disease. But we were also inspired by the bravery, fortitude, and goodness of so many who put their lives at risk in order to keep our City moving forward. It is this indomitable spirit that will get us through this crisis stronger than ever. I have never been prouder to be a New Yorker.”

Designed in the Gothic Revival style by architects Richard Upjohn and his son, Richard M., and built between 1861 until 1863, Green-Wood’s Arch marks the Cemetery’s Main Entrance at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue.

The Arch will be bathed in amber light until April 11, 2021.

Prospect Farm in Windsor Terrace has announced that compost can once again be dropped off there on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to noon. After a pandemic-related hiatus, Prospect Farm is now back to collecting our neighborhood's food scraps, diverting them from landfills, and making healthy and fertile compost to feed our local soils.
Every Saturday between 11am and 12pm
1194 Prospect Ave (below the Seely St bridge)

Mask wearing and physical distancing guidelines will be enforced so please be respectful.
Please only bring accepted materials, as listed below, to be donated to Prospect Farm and be sure to remove any produce stickers, rubber bands, and twist ties from your scraps before dumping them.

Accepted:
Fruit and vegetable scraps
Coffee grounds and filters
Paper tea bags
Egg and nut shells
Food-soiled paper towels and napkins
Bread and grains
Shredded newspaper
Sawdust and wood shavings from untreated wood
Stale beans, flour, and spices
Cut or dried flowers
Houseplants and potting soil
