ARRESTS MADE IN CASE OF ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING OF TEENAGE GIRL

Two suspects were arrested tonight for the September 22nd attempted kidnapping of a fifteen-year-old girl. The crime took place in front of a commercial building at 370 19th Street (between 7th and 8th avenues) at 2:40 p.m.

Brooklyn residents Raymond Ortiz, 60, of Wyckoff Street, and Delgria Lynch, 33, of Avenue T, were charged with two counts of second degree attempted kidnapping, acting in a manner injurious to a child, and two counts of second degree harassment. Two publications give his name as Richard Ortiz.

Allegedly, Lynch lured the girl over to the SUV that Lynch was a passenger in. Ortiz then grabbed the girl by her arms and tried to pull her into the SUV, but she was able to break away from him and escape.

We hope everyone is having a fantastic start of fall. This is a busy time at the Kensington family shelter and we wanted to share with you some of the upcoming activities.

First of all, thanks to everyone who donated clothing and other items for the back-to-school, back-to-work drive this month. The shelter got everything it needed and was very grateful for the community support.

Our next big project is a Halloween/Harvest party for the shelter kids. It will be held Saturday, October 28th, from noon to 2 p.m.

Here's how to help:

Costumes: Please drop off costumes in excellent condition to the shelter, 385 McDonald Ave. (across the street from Foodtown), attention Uniquia Parker, by October 15th. That Spider-Man or panda bear costume your kid wore last year for three hours of trick-or-treating that is not tattered or stained is just the type of thing to donate. Toddler/pre-school costumes are particularly needed.

An event captain: This is someone who can work with us to make sure we have everything we need for the party and be on site the day of from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to ensure things go smoothly. We keep these events relatively simple, so it's not a ton of work, but will require some emails and phone calls.

Face-painters: As anyone who has been to one of the shelter parties in the past can attest, the face-painters are the stars of these events. We will supply the paints (unless you have some of your own that you prefer to use) and you supply the creativity. You don't have to be Michelangelo for this gig, but you should be comfortable with kids and a paintbrush. Entertainment: We would love to provide some kind of kid-friendly entertainment. Maybe it's a sing-along. Maybe it's a DJ who can get the kids doing the Monster Mash. Maybe you're a magician who can spare an hour of your time? Please raise your hand by replying with the subject line ENTERTAINMENT.

Kensington Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison

For Fatally Stabbing Landlord with Sword

Apprehended in Airport before Boarding Flight to his Native Bangladesh

Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez today announced that a 31-year-old Brooklyn man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally stabbing his landlord with a samurai sword during a dispute inside a basement he was leasing from the victim.

Acting District Attorney Gonzalez said, “This defendant caused a tragic and completely senseless death, taking the life of a beloved businessman and a father of three. He will now serve a very long prison sentence for his brutal and violent conduct.”

The Acting District Attorney identified the defendant as Rasel Siddiquee, 31 of Kensington, Brooklyn. He was sentenced today by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Neil Firetog to 25 years in prison and five years’ post-release supervision following his guilty plea earlier this month to first-degree manslaughter.

The Acting District Attorney said that, according to the evidence, on January 6, 2014 the defendant was inside a basement apartment at 546 McDonald Avenue in Kensington, which he was renting from the victim, Mahiuddin Mahmud.

The defendant, who was holding a sword, became angry at the victim over a pedicab license that was received in the mail. He struck the victim with the sword multiple times and continued to strike him in the throat after he fell to the ground, the evidence showed.

The defendant was apprehended on January 8, 2014 in Kennedy Airport after using his credit card to buy a flight ticket to Bangladesh.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Melissa Carvajal, Deputy Bureau Chief of the District Attorney’s Homicide Bureau, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Timothy Gough, Chief.

PARKING REGULATIONS CHANGED ON YOM KIPPUR

ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPERS OF TEENAGE GIRL ARE BEING SOUGHT

The intended victim of a kidnapping--a fifteen-year-girl--thwarted the attempted crime last Friday, September 22nd, at about 2:30 p.m. A video of the attempted abduction is posted on Windsor Terrace Patch here.

The incident occurred in front of 370 19th Street (photo), between 8th and 7th avenues. That portion of the block has only commercial buildings. It's across the street from an on-ramp to the Prospect Expressway.
 
The man pictured on the poster above tried to pull the girl into the vehicle that he was driving, but she was able to break away from him and escape.

The vehicle is a gray, late-model BMW SUV. The driver was accompanied by a woman passenger.

The driver is described as a white or white Hispanic male with several arm tattoos, in his late 30s, and 5'8" to 5'10" tall.

The passenger is described as Asian, heavy-set, in her 30s, and with a tattoo of a bow on her lower back.

G TRAIN SKIPPING STATIONS THIS WEEKEND

No G trains will stop at the stations between Hoyt-Schermerhorn and Church Av. this weekend. G trains will operate in two sections.

A and F trains will provide alternate service.

From Friday, September 29th, at 11:30 p.m., until Monday, October 2nd, at 5:00 a.m., these stations will not have G train service, so take the F train instead:

Bergen Street, Carroll Street, Smith-9 streets, 4th Avenue-9th Street, 7th Avenue, 15th Street-Prospect Park, Fort Hamilton Parkway, and Church Avenue.

• Transfer between A and G trains at Hoyt-Schermerhorn.

Community Board 12's monthly general meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 26th, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting, as always, is open to the public.

FREE BICYCLE HELMETS

Bicycle Helmet Giveaway

Sunday, September 17th, 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Bicycle helmets are going to be given away at 18th Avenue/Gravesend Park. The exact location is 18th Avenue and 56th Street.

The New York City Department of Transportation, along with New York City Councilmember David G. Greenfield, will give them away on Sunday, September 17th, between 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Helmets are available for children and for adults. Adults over the age of 18 who receive a helmet must sign a waiver. For a child under the age of 18 to get a helmet, a parent or legal guardian must be present to sign the waiver.
 
Helmets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. 

You must be present to get a helmet. Nobody will be allowed to pick up a helmet for someone else. Before it can be given to you, you will be shown how to properly fit and wear it.

In New York City, 74% of fatal crashes involved a head injury. 97% of the bicyclists who died were not wearing a helmet.

STEALING PAPER GARBAGE, POSSIBLY FOR IDENTITY THEFT--SO SHRED YOURS

Thieves are rummaging through cans and bags in Windsor Terrace and Kensington that are filled with paper to recycle. The cans and bags are put outdoors the night before the Sanitation Department is scheduled to collect the paper.

Discarded mail is the target of the thieves. Foil them by shredding papers containing personal information before you put them in your paper recycling bags or cans and then outdoors. Using a cross-cut paper shredder is preferable.

The types of papers that include personal information are Social Security statements, credit card and bank and other financial statements, pre-approved credit card applications, ATM receipts, utility bill account numbers, medical records, store register receipts with your partial credit card numbers, mailing labels, pay stubs, etc.

The thieves seem to be operating at night, so you might want to wait until the morning of the collection to put your paper recycling by the curb.

Report trash tampering incidents to the Department of Sanitation by calling 311 or by filling out the form on the department's website. The department won't deal with individuals rummaging through the recycling, but it does want to be informed when a vehicle is involved in the theft.

66TH PRECINCT REP WILL SPEAK AT ALBEMARLE NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION MEETING

Albemarle Neighborhood Association Meeting

Thursday, September 14th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The guest speaker at the next Albemarle Neighborhood Association (ANA) community meeting will be a representative from the 66th Precinct. Discussion will focus on issues of interest and importance to the neighborhood, including any issues that you would like to talk about. 

At ANA's June meeting, community members brought up several long-standing complaints about car, electric bike, and non-powered bike traffic problems as well as trash problems. These concerns prompted ANA to invite the precinct to be this month's guest speaker.

Light refreshments will be provided by Foodtown and ANA. 

Members and non-members of ANA are welcome to attend all ANA community meetings. Admission is free.

About Albemarle Neighborhood Association

Albemarle Neighborhood Association (ANA) is the oldest neighborhood association in Brooklyn. Since its founding in 1973, it has worked to advance Kensington's quality of life. ANA's meetings are free and are open to the public. They provide a place for Kensington's residents to address safety, security, and quality of life issues.

ANA helps create a safe and stable neighborhood by working closely with its members, other neighborhood residents, city agencies, and elected officials to address key issues.

New members are welcome to join. This strengthens ANA's impact. Membership is open to everyone who resides in or owns a business in the geographic area ANA that serves:

• northern border: the north side of Caton Avenue
• southern border: the south side of Beverley Road
• western border: the west side of McDonald Avenue 
• eastern border: the east side of Ocean Parkway

An individual or family membership costs $20 per year. Associate Membership dues for business owners cost $25 per year.

Meetings are held in March, April, May, June, September, October, and November.
