CHRISTMAS TREE SALE AND PTA FUND RAISER; FREE DELIVERY AND SET-UP

Buying a Christmas tree can give a financial boost to a school in your area. Purchase a tree from Tom Foley and tell him which school you want him to donate money to. Tom will then donate $10 of the purchase price to that school's PTA.

A running tally will be kept on Tom's website of the amount that he'll be donating to each school. Last year, Tom donated $11,000 to PTAs.

The participating schools are
  • Pre-K 280,
  • P.S. 10,
  • P.S. 39,
  • P.S. 107,
  • P.S. 118,
  • P.S. 124,
  • P.S. 130,
  • P.S. 133,
  • P.S. 154,
  • P.S. 295,
  • P.S. 321,
  • P.S. 372,
  • M.S. 51,
  • M.S. 88,
  • M.S. 443,
  • M.S. 447,
  • Brooklyn Prospect Charter School,
  • Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School, and
  • St. Saviour Catholic Academy.

Fraser firs that are five feet tall or more are Tom's specialty. He also sells Fraser firs that are over eight feet tall. His small balsam firs are two feet to four feet tall (known as "Charlie Browns") and three feet to five feet tall.

The Frasers are cut just a week before Tom receives them, not months in advance.

Tips on where it's best to place your tree in your home, how to keep your tree watered, and what to do with your tree after the holiday are posted on Tom's website.

Only cash is accepted at the stand. If you'd like to pay with a credit card or a debit card, order from Tom online. Wreaths, pine roping (garland), and tree stands can also be ordered online.

Free delivery and free set-up are available if you request it. The delivery area is shown on this map.

Tom's stand is open during these hours:
  • Mondays through Thursdays, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Fridays, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and
  • Saturdays and Sundays, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

General meetings of Community Board 12 are normally held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, from September through June, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Amico Senior Center.

Every neighborhood in New York City is represented by an all-volunteer community board, which serves as the neighborhood's liaison to city agencies. Board members are appointed by the neighborhood's city councilperson and the borough president.

CURBSIDE LEAF COLLECTION SCHEDULE

Fallen leaves are collected curbside by the Department of Sanitation (DSNY). They turn them into compost, a natural soil amendment. Do not set out leaves, grass, branches, and yard clippings generated by hired professionals. Professionals must dispose of them at a permitted composting facility.

Leaf collection is part of the program for the portion of residents in Community Board 7 whose organics are collected by DSNY. Your leaves will not be collected separately. Put the leaves in your brown organics bin or in a paper lawn and leaf bag and set them out at the curb for pick-up with your regularly scheduled organics collection.

The rest of Community Board 7's residents and all of Community Board 12's residents should set out their leaves at the curb after 4:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, November 26th. Collection is scheduled to start on Sunday, November 27th. Since you do not have brown organics bins, put your leaves in either a paper lawn and leaf bag or an open, unlined container.

Paper lawn & leaf bags can generally be purchased at hardware and home improvement stores and many larger supermarkets. Click here to see a map of where you can buy paper lawn and leaf bags. Do not put leaves in plastic bags; they cannot be composted.

TOY DRIVE FOR CHILDREN IN KENSINGTON'S FAMILY SHELTER

A toy drive is underway for the eighty-five children currently living at The Kensington, the family shelter in our neighborhood. The drive was launched early so that the gifts will be ready for the wrapping party that will most likely be held during the first week of December.

The gifts will be given out at a holiday party in mid-December and on Christmas day.

The coordinators of givemeshelterbk, a mailing list of Kensington and Windsor Terrace residents who want to assist in the success of the shelter, are partnering with Park Slope Parents on this project.

To make sure that the right number of toys are collected for each age group, an Amazon Wish List has been created (https://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/2FETQYFQTF3CF). On that page, the shelter's address is set as the default address; your purchases will be shipped directly to the shelter.

Or maybe you would rather shop locally to support our neighborhood merchants. Saturday, November 26th, would be the perfect day to do that, if you can. That day is Small Business Saturday. The Shop Small movement encourages shoppers to buy from stores in their own neighborhoods, which increases neighborhood stability.

If you buy an item locally (or anywhere other than Amazon), mark it "purchased" on the wish list so that the coordinators can keep track of what has already been purchased. Click "Buying this gift elsewhere?", situated next to each item, right below "Add to Cart."

Bring the unwrapped toy(s) to the shelter (385 McDonald Avenue, across the street from Foodtown) by Thursday, December 1st, if possible. Mark it "Holiday toy drive. Attention: Uniquia Parker."

FOOD DONATIONS REQUESTED BY BROWNIES FOR A BROOKLYN FOOD PANTRY

                                          Food Drive
                   Friday, November 18th, 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

CAMBA needs to keep its Beyond Hunger Emergency Food Pantry fully stocked because it feeds 4,300 hungry Brooklynites every month. IHM Brownie Troop #2662 will lend CAMBA a hand by collecting food to donate to the food pantry.

The Brownies will be stationed outside of Foodtown tomorrow (Friday), from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. They'll accept canned tuna, chicken, and salmon, dried milk, beans, fruit, vegetables, and pasta, cereal, peanut butter, and 100% fruit juice.

They can't accepted expired or dented cans.

From CAMBA's website:

CAMBA’s emergency food pantry operates on a client-choice/supermarket-style system, where clients choose individual food items rather than receiving pre-packed bags, as they would at traditional pantries.

The pantry distributes a three-day supply of nutritional food. This is critical for many of our clients who are unable to maintain a healthy diet, including the elderly and those at or below the poverty level. Clients include current CAMBA clients, those referred by other agencies and organizations and people who self-refer.

Foodtown is located at 382 McDonald Avenue, at the corner of Albemarle Road, in Kensington.
