BATTLE OF BROOKLYN'S 240TH ANNIVERSARY WILL BE COMMEMORATED IN GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY (FREE)

The 240th Commemoration of the Battle of Brooklyn
Sunday, August 28th, noon to 4:00 p.m.

The 240th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn will be commemorated with a free day of living history and family-friendly events, including American and British troop re-enactors, Revolutionary War-Era music and cooking, a parade of flags, demonstrations of artillery, and more.

Fought on August 27, 1776, across Brooklyn--including on land that is now part of Green-Wood Cemetery--the Battle of Brooklyn was the first battle of the American Revolution to be waged after the Declaration of Independence was signed. In terms of the total number of British and American troops poised and ready to fight, this was the largest battle of the Revolution.

Schedule of events
  • noon to 1:30 p.m.: Living history programming on Green-Wood’s meadow includes drills, weapons demonstrations, and re-enactors from Continental Line regiments as well as historic figures.
  • 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.: The Battle of Brooklyn Parade will travel from Green-Wood’s Main Gate to Battle Hill, with The Regimental Band of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Along the parade route will be nearly 100 replicas of Revolutionary War flags, which attendees are invited to carry to Battle Hill.
  • 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.: The Battle of Brooklyn Commemoration Ceremony atop Battle Hill--the highest natural point in Brooklyn, with views of the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and the Manhattan skyline--will end a day honoring the heroes of the battle.
