TOXIC HATE GRAFFITI HAS GOT TO GO

Hate

Hate painted over.

From Kim, a Kensington neighbor:
a call for awareness and an end to hate graffiti

Personally as a Muslim American, I have lived peacefully in Kensington for over 3 years now. I have never experienced any religious discrimination except in the form of this hate crime--specifically, these hateful messages which have been repeatedly written on the two USPS storage boxes along Ocean Parkway.

When I first noticed these hateful messages, it was disconcerting, but perhaps like many, I figured it would be taken care of sooner of later. Now after so many repeated incidents and over such a long period of time I believe its only right to bring the person or people responsible for this to justice. The dedicated police officers of precinct 66 made sure the hateful writing was removed from both storage boxes and are investigating this hate crime further.

This is the month of Ramadan, but I don't want people to think that's the only reason this happened. As I stated before, this is a recurring problem. It is only now being handled appropriately because someone cared enough to report it to the proper authorities. The USPS has also been contacted, since these storage boxes are their property, but there is no update from them as of yet.

Regardless of religious affiliation, this situation is important to all residents of Kensington. Not only are these messages atypical of our neighborhood but they also discredit our reputation for being a diverse and harmonious community. I hope that by spreading awareness we can put an end to this chronic crime.

Best,
Kim
