HIDING FROM THE HOLOCAUST: "NO PLACE ON EARTH"

Movie: "No Place on Earth"
Thursday, May 15th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The docudrama "No Place on Earth" tells the remarkable story of five Ukrainian Jewish families who hid in a cave in the Nazi-occupied Ukraine during World War II. Four of the survivors narrate the film.

In 1942, thirty-eight men, women, and children, aged two to seventy-six, entered Priest's Grotto--one of the longest caves in the world at seventy-seven miles--with the hope of surviving the Nazi mass executions of Ukrainian Jews. They lived underground, in darkness, for well over a year until local people gave them the news that the Nazis had gone.

In 1993, Chris Nicola, a cave explorer (and, at the time, an NYPD officer) from Queens, New York, was investigating caves in southwestern Ukraine. In one of them, he came across a comb, a shoe, buttons, a mug, a skeleton key (pictured above), and other artifacts of human existence.

In 2002, after years spent searching and researching, Mr. Nicola received an e-mail from the son-in-law of a survivor--who, coincidentally, lived in Queens.

Sixty-seven years after they left their refuge, Mr. Nicola led four survivors back "to say thank you to the cave."

After the screening, Mr. Nicola will talk about the film and answer questions from the audience about this inspiring and incredible story.
