FIREHOUSE ON PROSPECT AVE. LANDMARKED

Engine Co. 240/Battalion 48 has been awarded city landmark status. The building, in continuous use for 117 years, has been designated as a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, which cites it as an "architecturally distinctive" firehouse.

Peter J. Lauritzen designed the two-story limestone and brick. building, located in Windsor Terrace at 1307-1309 Prospect Avenue (near Greenwood Avenue), in the Romanesque Revival style, a popular style for firehouses at the time. The firehouse, originally named Engine Co. 40/Hook & Ladder 21, went into service on January 20, 1896. It was renamed Engine Co. 240 in 1913. Battalion 48, which oversees the FDNY’s units in Windsor Terrace, Park Slope, and Borough Park, has been housed there since 1978.
