ANOTHER HALLMARK STORE WILL CLOSE

The Churchview (or CV) Hallmark store at 236 Prospect Park West--between Windsor Place and Prospect Avenue--will close in approximately two months, after being open for about twenty-six years. Everything in the store is being sold for 40% off.

The store's next-door neighbor, Shop Smart Food Mart, will expand into that space.

Hallmark stores--whether they're corporate-owned or independently operated--have been closing by the dozens for the past several years; some had been open for twenty-something, thirty-something, and even forty-something years. One family-operated store had been in business for sixty years.

"A study conducted by the U.S.P.S. showed that correspondence using greeting cards delivered through the mail decreased by over 24% between 2010 and 2011." Social media, e-cards, e-mail, texting, tweeting, instant messaging, Hallmark's prices, and the country's economic status are given as the causes of decreased sales of greeting cards.

Hallmark is also closing its greeting card and envelope manufacturing plant in Topeka. One of Hallmark's three plants in Kansas, it opened in 1943.
