GENTLY USED COATS ARE NEEDED FOR HURRICANE SANDY VICTIMS

New York City police precincts, public libraries, and three Prospect Park locations are accepting gently used coats through December 31st for the New York Cares 24th Annual Coat Drive. This year, recipients of the donated coats will not be the homeless only but also the thousands of victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Last year, New York Cares collected 78,000 coats. This year, because of the increased need, their goal is 200,000 coats.

Take a look at this 5-borough map. It shows where where coats are needed most. The darker the blue, the more coats are needed in that borough. The brighter the red, the less the need.

New or clean gently-used coats are being collected at these Prospect Park locations through December 31, in addition to libraries, and police stations:

BUY A CHRISTMAS TREE AND SUPPORT A LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

Buy a Christmas tree from Tom Foley and help a local school financially.

Tom, a former stock broker, sells trees at the corner of 8th Avenue and 8th Street in Park Slope. Tell him that you'd like $10 of the purchase price donated to a school listed on his website at https://www.foleyfirs.com/our-fundraiser.

Suggest to your family and friends that they buy from Tom too so that their tree purchase also helps a school. It isn't necessary to have a child in a particular school in order to have the donation made.

Delivery and tree set-up are free of charge if you already have your tree stand in place.

From "Finding the Perfect Christmas Tree: A Bluegreen Timeshares Holiday Exclusive":

Common Christmas tree varietals include the Douglas fir, the Canadian balsam, the Noble fir, and the Fraser fir. Tom Foley, the proprietor of a popular Christmas tree lot in Brooklyn, New York, recommends that shoppers seek out a Fraser fir if possible. He prefers Frasers for a number of reasons, namely because the varietal boasts approximately 30 branches and gives off an especially piney scent.
If you have any questions, send an e-mail  to Tom.

DINNER, A MOVIE FOR ADULTS, AND A MOVIE FOR KIDS

Dinner and a Movie
Saturday, December 1st, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Adults and children are invited to Movie Night at the Flatbush Jewish Center. "Gasland," a film by Josh Fox, will be shown to the adults while children are in another room in their pajamas watching "The Lorax." Both movies begin at 6:30.

A light dinner will be served in the Hanid Room at 6:00 p.m. The cost of dinner and a movie (or just the movie, if you don't want dinner) is $5.00 per adult, $2.00 per child.  Menu: Italian dairy, salads, popcorn, and beverages. If you can't pay, you won't be turned away.

After dinner, the adults will stay in the Hanid Room and watch "Gasland,"a 2010 documentary about hydraulic fracturing (commonly referred to as "hydrofracking" or "fracking").  The movie's intention is to warn the public about fracking's negative effects on the environment, the water supply, and people's health.

Kids will go upstairs to the kids activity room where Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax" will be shown. "
Twelve-year-old Ted will do anything to find a real live Truffula Tree in order to impress the girl of his dreams. As he embarks on his journey, Ted discovers the incredible story of the Lorax, a grumpy but charming creature who speaks for the trees."

Bring pillows and blankets to keep the children warm and comfortable.

A ride home will be available to those who need one. If you need a ride to Flatbush Jewish Center, call (718) 871-5200 to make arrangements.

PUBLIC SCHOOL VACATION CUT SHORT

To make up for the week of school lost because of Hurricane Sandy, the Department of Education is shortening mid-winter recess and canceling a clerical half-day.

For mid-winter recess, schools were scheduled to be closed for five days: Monday, February 18th, through Friday, February 22nd. Instead, they'll be closed for two days: Monday, February 18th, and Tuesday, February 19th.

The first June clerical half day, on Tuesday, June 4th, has been canceled. Elementary and intermediate/junior high schools will not close at noon; they'll be open  for the full day.

It looks like the DOE isn't going to make students make up the other one-and-a-half days that they missed.

GAS RATIONING NOT OVER YET

Gas rationing--the odd-even license plate system that was put into effect in New York City on Friday, November 9th--has been extended until Friday, November 23rd, the day after Thanksgiving. Thirty percent of the gas stations in New York City are still closed.

The system explained:
  • Drivers of vehicles with license plates ending in an even number or ‘zero’ can buy gas on even-numbered days.
  • Drivers of vehicles with license plates ending in an odd number can buy gas on odd-numbered days.
  • Drivers of vehicles with licenses plates ending in letters are considered to be odd-numbered plates and can make purchases on odd-numbered days.
  • Commercial vehicles, emergency vehicles, buses and para transit vehicles, Medical Doctor (MD) plates, and vehicles licensed by the Taxi and limousine Commission are exempt from this gas rationing system.

SAVE A LIFE WHILE YOU SWAP CLOTHING

Clothing Swap, Blood Drive, and Bone Marrow Registry
Saturday, November 17th, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

P.S. 139's Parent Association will juggle three events on Saturday: the annual clothing swap, a blood drive, and bone marrow registration.

The clothing swap will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. People bring clothing to the clothing swap that they no longer want, and they leave with clothing donated by others. This year, it'll be different in that people will be asked to take away only one bag of clothing. All of the leftover clothing will be donated to people who are in need because of Hurricane Sandy--or a monetary donation will be made.

New York Blood Center's blood drive and the National Marrow Donor Program's Be the Match bone marrow registration will both be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lots of blood is needed because the supply has run so low; the Blood Center wasn't able to collect for a while because of the hurricane.

To donate blood, sign up online at https://drm.nybloodcenter.org/PublicScheduler/GroupWelcome.aspx?Group=62425. Or send an e-mail to Diana at dkfrombk @ yahoo.com.

If you can't participate in the blood drive that day but would like to be a blood donor another day, call the New York Blood Center at (800) 933-2566.

To determine your medical eligibility for donating blood, call the Blood Center at (800) 688-0900.

CURRIER & IVES: BRINGING ART TO THE MASSES

"Currier & Ives: 19th Century Printmakers
Who Put Art in the Hands of Ordinary People"
Saturday, November 17th, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Mass-produced lithographic prints designed and turned out by the firm of Currier & Ives brought art and the myriad of subjects it portrays within the grasp of ordinary people. Currier & Ives produced more than 7,500 lithographs between 1834 and 1907 and sold more than a million copies of them. Ordinary people were hungering for access to art.

Nathaniel Currier founded the company in Manhattan in the 1830s. It was subsequently owned by both him and James Merritt Ives, his bookkeeper and accountant, from the 1850s.

Robert K. Newman, a third-generation owner of the Old Print Shop in Manhattan and an expert on Currier & Ives, will provide an in-depth look at this legendary team.

The talk is free.

After Mr. Newman's talk, Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman will lead a trolley tour that will stop at the graves of Currier, Ives, and other artists from the firm, including Fannie Palmer, the only woman in an otherwise all-male business.

The optional trolley tour costs $15 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and $20 for non-members. Because seating is limited, making reservations is recommended. For more information or to make reservations online, either go to www.green-wood.com/toursevents or call (718) 210-3080.
