66TH PRECINCT'S NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME MOVES

The 66th Precinct Community Council is changing the venue of this year's National Night Out against Crime. Held at the precinct building in Borough Park since at least 2007, the program will instead be held in Gravesend Park (also called 18th Avenue Park) at 18th Avenue and 56th Street in Borough Park on Tuesday, August 7th, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Bring your family and friends.

The goals of National Night Out, now in its 29th year, are to
  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
National Night Out was introduced in 1984 by National Association of Town Watch, which was founded in 1981.

Many people, as an alternative, participate in National Night Out by turning on their porch lights, sitting outside for the evening, and chatting with their neighbors. This grassroots tradition dates back to the early 1970s.
