Church Avenue Sessions*A Monthly Music Series in Kensington, Brooklyn*Thursday, June 2nd, at 7 pm$10 at the gateFeaturingJob’s Trials by Dan LoomisSortaMetaJOB’S TRIALS: A JAZZ SONG CYCLE BY DAN LOOMIS
Job’s Trials: A Jazz Song Cycle by bassist/composer, Dan Loomis is an evocative musical dive into an ancient, universal story exploring why bad things happen to good people.Job stands up for his truth and dares to hold God to account. Loomis brings his unique compositional voice and signature soulful bass-playing to a new jazz song cycle form developed to bring this story alive. The fullness of the album examines the most perplexing and powerful themes from the story: the ephemeral value of a virtuous life, the injustice of suffering, and the righteousness of rebellion.
This record, an ambitious step forward for Loomis, reaches into uncharted formal and sonic territory to create a novel and thought-provoking artistic experience. The unique ensemble bringing this album to life consists of two outlandishly soulful singers, Song Yi Jeon and Yoon Sun Choi; a visionary guitarist, Jeff Miles; and NYC’s favourite beast on the drums, Jared Schonig. The composer and bassist, Dan Loomis, uses a unique new format based on a classical song cycle recast using the passionate language of jazz, and amplified with theatrical narration. Each song presents an essential, thought- provoking theme from the Book of Job, setting music to original text. Stepping in for the role of narrator, linking the events from each song (and going through a transformative experience himself) is the character of Satan, played by Broadway star Daniel Breaker (Hamilton, Book of Mormon, Passing Strange). In both form and content this piece is truly unlike anything else in the jazz or classical cannon.
SORTAMETA

ABOUT CHURCH AVENUE SESSIONS:A monthly music series has sprung up in Kensington, Brooklyn called Church Avenue Sessions. Founded by guitarist and composer Yoshie Fruchter and hosted by the Flatbush Jewish Center, the series is focused on showcasing the amazing artistry of Brooklyn based musicians, regardless of genre. All ages are welcome! As a recent transplant to Kensington from Prospect Heights, Yoshie was inspired to start CAS from other peers who have run music series’ in synagogues around the city, including The Sixth Street Synagogue in the East Village, Kane Street synagogue in Cobble Hill, Temple Beth Emeth in Ditmas Park, and the Stephen Wise synagogue on the upper west side.
As community spaces, synagogues are many ways perfect venues to present art and music, and Flatbush Jewish Center is no exception. With a beautiful and spacious sanctuary, and a downstairs event room, there is opportunity to present both sensitive acoustic music, as well as bands that utilize drums and electric instruments.
Flatbush Jewish Center (FJC) is a Conservative synagogue offering programming and services for families, adults, and children. We serve the Windsor Terrace and Kensington, Brooklyn communities and offer traditional egalitarian services.
Yoshie Fruchter is a guitar, bass, oud player and composer whose band, Pitom (Tzadik Records), has received critical acclaim from JazzTimes magazine, the Wall Street Journal and Guitar Player Magazine, among others. The unique blend of rock, jazz, experimental and Jewish styles in his playing and composing is a defining characteristic of his music. He has toured the US and Europe with Pitom and other groups, playing the Atlantique Jazz Festival in France, the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival, Saalfelden Jazz Festival in Austria and others. He recently released a record of post-rock arrangements of old cantorial recordings entitled Schizophonia, and leads a new project called Sandcatchers featuring oud, lap steel and cello. In addition, Yoshie is a sought-after freelance musician in New York City in bands ranging in style from acoustic world music to heavy metal and has performed with John Zorn, Cyro Baptista and Frank London, among many others.
Yoshie and his family are members of Flatbush Jewish Center and the Kensington community.

BUFFALO, NEW YORK: FUND RAISER FOR THE VICTIMS AND FAMILIES OF THE RACIST MASSACRE
From Flatbush Jewish Center
The FJC community was deeply saddened to hear about yet another racially motivated attack at a grocery store in Buffalo over the weekend. Our hearts go out to the families of the 10 lives that were violently taken from this world and pray for the recovery, both physical and emotional, of the 3 people who were injured.
We have learned that the manifesto of the alleged shooter contained both racist and antisemetic rhetoric and calls for more of this extremist behavior. The FJC community remains resolute in our commitment to fighting for the freedom, justice and peace of all humankind.
To support the victims of this act of sinat hinam (baseless hatred), FJC is raising funds to cover the cost of funerals and also to provide food to community members who rely so heavily on the Tops supermarket (that is now closed temporarily).
We were especially touched by the story of Andre Mackniel, a father who was at the Tops supermarket to buy a birthday cake for his son who just turned 3 (read more about the victims here). In his honor and memory, we want to give the community an opportunity to bake and share items and strengthen our ties to each other.
Here’s how you can help:
1. Pledge to bake items this week or next, to be sold to another community member as a part of the fundraiser.
2. Watch this space for baked items for sale, to be available for pickup this Thursday evening (5/19) and next Thursday evening (5/26).
3. Make a donation now, directly to our relief fund. If you have any questions or would like to help in other ways, please contact Dina Garfinkel (dinagee@gmail.com).
May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life for us and for all people. May Hashem create peace for us all and may the memories of those who passed provide comfort to their loved ones.
