MINUTES OF ALBEMARLE NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION PUBLIC MEETING, MARCH 2022

Albemarle Neighborhood Association (ANA)
Minutes of the March 30, 2022, Meeting
by Jannette Katz Gomori, Secretary

Larry Jayson presided over the zoom meeting with 10 participants.
Peter Gomori, Treasurer
Jannette Katz Gomori, Secretary

1. New York State Assemblyman Robert Carroll was introduced.

Councilman Carroll is in Albany awaiting the state budget approval proceedings. It is hoped that the budget will be passed by the beginning of April. Some sticking points are issues of affordable housing, bail reform, and casinos.

There has been additional funding given to SUNY and CUNY as well as to the public schools, MTA funding, and renewable energy projects. The Federal Stimulus package has added funding to the State budget. Robust tax receipts from state and city have added as well.

The uptick in crime was discussed. Councilman Carroll spoke about preserving the Presumption of Innocence structure.

Also spoken about was that most crimes have nothing to do with bail reform. Reasons for uptick in crime include the lockdown during the pandemic, folks staying at home, and unemployment. Bail is only used to compel people to return back to court.

Rollout in congestion pricing was discussed. The timetable would suggest March or April 2023. Traffic is equal to or above pre-pandemic levels. Limited exemptions might include individuals with disabilities or under medical treatment.

2. Pete Gomori spoke about the East 5 Street block party scheduled for May 14, pending permit approval. The block would include the street between Albemarle Road and Caton Avenue. A letter is being sent to everyone on the block to inform people of the event. Activities include tree management, street cleaning, petitioning to restart composting, arts /crafts, and music. Bob Elstein of the Beautify Brooklyn movement is invited to attend.

The purpose of the block party is for neighbors to meet neighbors and to improve quality of life. A $1000 grant was awarded to sponsor a music event in Kensington that might be used for this event.

3. Church Avenue cleanliness was discussed.

The issue of 419 Church Avenue being vacant as well as the deli next door contributing garbage on the streets adds to the unsightliness and uncleanliness of the area. People can call 311 to report this, as each store is responsible for cleaning the front area of their store.

Foodtown was discussed regarding quality of freshness and accurate advertising of sales. Larry Jayson will speak to the manager regarding these issues.

Parkway Pharmacy has a torn awning outside the building. Larry Jayson will speak to the owners to see if the awning can be replaced.

Trash outside Dunkin Donuts is placed in black bags outside the store. Is it possible to have bins used instead of black garbage bags?

Pete Gomori suggested having another volunteer cleanup on Church Ave sometime this spring.

4. A gathering of Uber drivers on Albermarle Ave near Ocean Parkway has been observed daily around 4 p.m. Larry Jayson will look into this to see if there is any questionable activity.

Also mentioned was the concern regarding a menacing person standing in the middle of Ocean Parkway on an island leading to the Prospect Expressway. 311 should be called as well as the Neighborhood Coordination Officers, Karol Smiarowsky at 917 826 6569 and Vivianne Perrone at 917 863 5169. The 66th Precinct can be called as well at 718 851 5611.

5. Participatory Budgeting week is starting this week.

6. The next ANA meeting will take place on Zoom in June, with the date to be determined.

Respectfully submitted
Jannette Katz Gomori, Secretary

DANCING IN KENSINGTON: CYNTHIA KING DANCE STUDIO WILL BE IN RESIDENCE AT FLATBUSH JEWISH CENTER

Dear  Neighbors and Friends of CKDS,

This has been an incredibly challenging time for all of us. We have endured a pandemic shutdown, the tragic loss of loved ones, the omicron wave, and ever-changing rules and guidelines. Like so many other small businesses and arts organizations we are also suffering the actions of a landlord desperate for higher rent who has been applying pressures we can no longer endure.

In the interest of maintaining a positive atmosphere at the studio I have kept this struggle quiet. I have hoped with all my heart that we’d find a solution and not have to move (and certainly not have to disband!). Unfortunately, we will have to leave the studio we have called home for the past 9 years.

BUT…HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS! I’m excited to announce that we have found a beautiful, storybook community partnership which is providing us with a safety net and helping prevent any interruption in our training and artistic mission. It’s just blocks away at the corner of Church Ave and East 5th Street!

We will be able to begin our residency in July at the Flatbush Jewish Center: 327 East 5th Street!

This local synagogue:

  • Is a progressive and welcoming place...the president of their board is a black woman, a mother, a school principal, and a former CKDS dancer!!!!

  • Their mission includes building a safe community for intersected identities, ages, and abilities and “to be the change and effect the change that we want to see in the world.”
  • FJC is committed to being active in the greater community in which they are located.

While it’s difficult (even heartbreaking) to have to leave the home we designed, built, and filled with memories, securing a space to continue dancing is most important. June 1st marks the 20th year of CKDS! We will continue to look for a more permanent home but are thrilled that we can KEEP DANCING together - uninterrupted! We won’t stop training, creating, expressing, laughing, and performing.

Your continued support means so much to us and there are many ways you can help us through this transition:

  • Donate to our upcoming GoFundMe (or donate directly to the studio now: https://cynthiakingdance.com/donate)

  • Join us for our Spring Cleaning Yard Sale at 21 Snyder Ave. (June 11 & 12)
  • Lend a hand as we walk our costume racks, props, and thousands of tutus over to the new space :)
  • Continue dancing with us for years to come!

Our upcoming Summer and Fall schedules will be announced ASAP so dancers will be able to secure their spots.

Thank you all for your commitment to dance, arts, and culture. Now more than ever…we need to stay immersed in the things that make us happy and healthy.

With love and gratitude,

Cynthia King

EARTH DAY NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP

Earth Day Neighborhood Cleanup
Sunday, April 24th, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Love your planet and your neighborhood. On Earth Day, meet up with your neighbors at the Newkirk Community Garden in Kensington and work together to clean up streets in the neighborhood.

Gloves and grabbers for picking up litter will be available for you to use. If you have your own gloves and grabbers, you're welcome to bring them. And bring used plastic bags with you to fill with litter.

When Earth Day was first celebrated back in 1970,
"Earth Day inspired 20 million Americans — at the time, 10% of the total population of the United States — to take to the streets, parks and auditoriums to demonstrate against the impacts of 150 years of industrial development which had left a growing legacy of serious human health impacts.

Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment and there were massive coast-to-coast rallies in cities, towns, and communities.

By the end of 1970, the first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of other first of their kind environmental laws."

You can read more about the history of Earth Day, from 1970 up to the present, at https://www.earthday.org/history/.
