NEW COMMUNITY FRIDGE IN WINDSOR TERRACE

Community fridges and purple pantries are tools in the struggle for food justice and against food insecurity and an opportunity for neighbors to help neighbors.

Kensington/Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid (KWTMA) set up a community fridge today near the northeast corner of E. 2nd Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway, by the laundromat. There you can donate perishable foods, such as dairy products, meat, eggs, home-cooked meals, fresh fruit, and fresh vegetables, or you can take food that you need.

[Update: The purple pantry is on E. 4th Street, just south of Fort Hamilton Parkway.] In the near future, KWTMA will set up a purple pantry by Jaya Yoga East, located at the corner of Fort Hamilton Parkway and E. 4th Street, for non-perishables, such as canned and packaged foods.

A map of the community fridges and purple pantries in Brooklyn is posted at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1sU_etWNgS4tWVbx5SSyjcTF09Pltl5an&ll=40.64801884051553%2C-73.9781280074266&z=18.

IF YOUR RELATIVE OR FRIEND SERVED IN WORLD WAR II: GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY LAUNCHES ITS EFFORT TO IDENTIFY WORLD WAR II VETERANS

Update: You can now also submit information by filling out a form on the Green-Wood website: https://www.green-wood.com/ww-ii-project/?mc_cid=93606e7cf0&mc_eid=1f94a98131.

---------------------------------------------------

Many people in this area have family and friends who served our nation during World War II, and some of them are buried in Green-Wood Cemetery. Green-Wood is asking for your help in identifying them so they can be publicly acknowledged and commemorated for their service.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

GREEN-WOOD LAUNCHES PROJECT TO FORMALLY RECOGNIZE ITS WORLD WAR II VETERANS

Landmark Cemetery Seeking the Help of Families and Friends to Identify and Honor WWII Veterans Interred at Green-Wood

(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Brooklyn, NY) – To mark the 80th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War II, Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery today launched its World War II Project, an effort to identify and honor Green-Wood’s permanent residents—military, medical, and civilian—who bravely served to protect our country in the European and Pacific Theaters and at home.

Volunteers and staff, under the direction of cemetery historian Jeff Richman, will pore through Green-Wood’s extensive archival records to identify men and women who served our country during World War II. Because burial records or gravestones don’t always indicate military service, the team will also utilize the public records of military pension applications, New York State records, and all other available resources.

Green-Wood is asking for the public’s help. Richman noted, “Identifying the veterans is an arduous process. Our dedicated team will spend countless hours on this important project. But you can become an important partner in this effort just by letting us know if you had a relative or friend who served in WWII and is interred at Green-Wood. It’s a simple way to preserve and honor their history.”

Anyone with information about relatives or friends who served in WWII and are interred at Green-Wood should email history@green-wood.com or call 718-210-3045 with as much information as possible, including:

  • Name of serviceperson
  • Date and place of birth
  • Date and place of death
  • Service details (for example: infantryman; Marine; pilot; nurse; civilian contractor, etc.)
  • Lot number at Green-Wood
  • Contact information for family
  • A photograph of the serviceperson

Green-Wood President Richard J. Moylan said, “The lives of our Greatest Generation must be memorialized. Green-Wood is committed to doing all we can make sure their stories are told.”

Green-Wood will compile an online, searchable database of the veterans along with a short biography on each. Richman will also create public programming and tours to honor the veterans’ service. The first tour will take place on Memorial Day 2021.

Richman noted that the WWII Project follows the success of Green-Wood’s two other initiatives on war veterans. The WWI Project identified over 200 veterans buried at the cemetery. In the Civil War Project, volunteers helped identify more than 5,000 Civil War soldiers interred at the Cemetery. Green-Wood is the largest burial ground of Civil War veterans north of the Mason Dixon Line.

The United States entered WWII on December 8, 1941 in the aftermath of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. Germany declared war on the U.S. three days later on December 11. Between 1941 and 1945, 326,000 Brooklynites, or 12% of Brooklyn's total population, served in the war. The number represented 58% of Brooklyn's males between the ages of 18 and 37.

CELEBRATING GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY'S BLACK "RESIDENTS" ONLINE (FREE)

Celebrating Green-Wood's Black Residents
Wednesday, February 24th, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Slavery was abolished in New York State in 1827. Founded eleven years later in 1838, Green-wood Cemetery has always been integrated.

Green-Wood Cemetery celebrates Black History Month annually with a trolley tour that honors the life and accomplishments of many prominent black New Yorkers as well as several abolitionists.

This year, the celebration will be online instead of in-person and a fee won't be charged.

From Green-Wood Cemetery's website:

Although Brooklyn and New York City have long struggled with segregation and racism, they also have a history of diversity, progress, and activism.

This conversation, between City Councilman Robert E. Cornegy, Jr., and Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman, will examine the life and accomplishments of many prominent Black New Yorkers.

Featured will be Jean-Michel Basquiat, innovative artist of the 1970s and ’80s; Susan Smith McKinney Steward, the first Black female doctor in New York State; Jeremiah Hamilton, New York’s first Black millionaire; and jazz great Cedar Walton.

We’ll also discuss freed enslaved people who worked as abolitionists and those buried in Green-Wood’s Freedom Lots, where more than one thousand people of color are interred. These stories illustrate the long struggle toward equality that remains ongoing today.

This conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents, Zooming in on History.

Reservations to this virtual program are free. Please consider a donation so that Green-Wood can continue to provide free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.

VIRTUAL COFFEE HOUSE MAKES ITS NEIGHBORHOOD DEBUT

Poets Raymond Nat Turner and Zigi Lowenberg, formerly of NYC,
supported the Virtual Coffee House from Oakland with readings.

Roy Nathanson and Aidan Scrimgeour of Kensington’s Five O’Clock Porch Concerts shared their musical compositions at the Virtual Coffee House.

Poets, spoken word artists, and musicians gathered last week for the neighborhood’s first Virtual Coffee House sponsored by Kensington / Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid (KWTMA).

The event drew over thirty people from the neighborhood and beyond. The atmosphere was unusually relaxed for a large online gathering. Both live and video performance was featured. Artists shared original poems and songs as well as jazz-poetry pieces they had composed. Some read pieces by artists they admired. Many just came to listen.

Coffee Houses have hundreds of years of history as venues where innovative, even revolutionary, art and ideas have converged. Saturday’s coffee house seemed to fit that tradition, using online technology to bring artists and activists together in order to build community, inspire one another, and raise money for KWT Mutual Aid’s program of food support at a time when, as one organizer put it, “the neighborhood is experiencing glaring inequalities amid the ongoing pandemic.”

As messages flew through the chat, “Thanks for all the love and support!” seemed an overriding sentiment. After the event, about a third of the participants stayed on. Several expressed that they simply didn’t want to “leave the room” after spending so much time in isolation without access to festive gatherings.

It was the consensus of those present that the Virtual Coffee House should continue. Organizers say they will be planning future coffee house events and they ask the community to stay tuned.
