GIFTS, A MEAL, COOKIES, AND HOLIDAY HELP ARE REQUESTED FOR THE FAMILIES AT THE KENSINGTON FAMILY SHELTER

Gifts for the children, gifts for the parents, a meal, and cookies--the families at The Kensington, the family shelter on McDonald Avenue near Church Avenue, will appreciate all of these.

Before the shelter opened in December 2015, neighborhood residents Catherine and Tracy volunteered to bring the neighborhood together to support the sheltered families in any way we're able to and to serve as liaisons between the neighborhood and the shelter.

Periodically throughout the year, they send e-mail to neighborhood residents with information about what the families need. Sometimes it's clothing, sometimes it's personal care products, sometimes it's holiday gifts, and sometimes it's participation at parties or other events.

To get on the mailing list for updates from Catherine and Tracy, send an e-mail to givemeshelterbk @ gmail.com.

And now, here's the e-mail they sent today.

Happy holidays to you all!

-----------------------------------------
Hello Neighbors!

We hope everyone is having a terrific autumn. A few weeks ago we threw a Halloween party for the kids at the shelter. A local resident, Beth Boyle Machlan, coordinated a bunch of NYU students to put on the event, which featured a visit from Spider-Man. A huge hit, as you can imagine.

We are now in the thick of planning our winter events. This neighborhood has always come through in a big way to make the families' holidays super-special and we know you will do it again. Now onto the details!

As you know, we try to provide three gifts for every child at the shelter, each chosen specifically for them with input from shelter staff. We have created an Amazon wishlist for this purpose. You can order from Amazon, or buy the same item elsewhere and mark as bought on the wishlist. Please do not wrap! We will be holding a wrapping event. https://amzn.to/2KEOPLk

We also try to provide a gift for the adults. As in the past, we hope to collect one new bath-and-body set or perfume/cologne for each parent. We have created an Amazon wishlist for convenience — https://amzn.to/2pxjSRQ — but you are also welcome to purchase elsewhere (or regift!) and bring or ship to the shelter.

The gifts will be handed out at the holiday party (details in a future email) and on Christmas morning. On Dec. 15, we will host a wrapping event at the shelter. If you would like to volunteer for that, you can sign up here (18+ for on-site volunteers please!): https://bit.ly/2Oxs1OG

We have two more ways to help out this season:

We are providing a harvest meal the day after Thanksgiving. You can sign up here to donate a cooked dish, dessert, paper goods or beverages (details in the link as well): https://bit.ly/2qzOqmq  Shelter staff will handle serving the meal, so no volunteers are needed for this event.

And we are doing our cookie brigade again! If you would like to drop off some cookies at the shelter during the holiday weeks, sign up here: https://bit.ly/2XvUXuA

The shelter address is 385 McDonald Ave., Brooklyn NY 11218. All donations for these events should be marked attn: Uniquia Parker.

Thank you for all you do for our neighbors who are struggling. It's really a gift to the community and to us! We will send you one more email with further details on the Holiday party scheduled for Dec 22. In the meantime, stay warm!

Love,
Catherine and Tracy

CRIME-FOCUSED MEETING CALLED FOR THE 72ND PRECINCT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Special Meeting of the 72nd Precinct Community Council
Tuesday, November 26th, 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The special meeting of the 72nd Precinct Community Council that Windsor Terrace residents were promised has been scheduled for next week.

At last week's meeting, the commanding officer was caught unaware of a number of the crimes residents reported at the meeting. Some of the crimes they reported were

  • group assaults,
  • groups of people armed with guns and/or knives,
  • verbal threats of physical violence,
  • house break-ins,
  • car break-ins,
  • people climbing on top of garages to get access to private backyards,
  • young teenagers smoking pot in the presence of younger children in parks,
  • crimes by the Fort Hamilton Parkway/E. 5th Street F and G subway station due to the absence of a clerk inside and low lighting outside, and
  • package theft.

Quite a few took place in the southwestern portion of Windsor Terrace--the part that's closer to Kensington and is west of the Prospect Expressway.

Deputy Inspector Emmanuel Gonzalez committed to following up on those matters and reporting back to the community at a specially-called meeting, rather than waiting until the Community Council's regularly-scheduled monthly meeting in December.

This follow-up meeting of the 72nd Precinct Community Council will be held on Tuesday, November 26th, at 7:30 p.m.

NEIGHBORHOOD POLICE WILL MEET WITH KENSINGTON RESIDENTS IN TWO WEEKS

Kensington Neighborhood Policing and Safety Meeting
              Wednesday, December 4th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCOs) and the Steady Sector Officers in the 66th Precinct's Sector D (Kensington and Ditmas) will meet with residents on Wednesday, December 4th, to discuss pedestrian and highway safety and any other issues you wish to address.

At 6:30 p.m., refreshments will be served at this Build The Block Neighborhood Policing and Safety Meeting. At 7:00 p.m., the meeting will start.

The NYPD divides each precinct into four or five sectors to carry out neighborhood policing. This means that the same officers work in the same neighborhoods on the same shifts. The radio dispatchers, supervisors, and sector officers work together. Sector officers and sector cars stay within the boundaries of their assigned sectors, except in precinct-wide emergencies.

The four sectors in the 66th Precinct are Sector A or Adam, Sector B or Boy, Sector C or Charlie, and Sector D or David.

Sector D's boundaries are Fort Hamilton Parkway and Caton Avenue to the north, Coney Island Avenue to the east, 18th Avenue and Avenue F to the south, and McDonald Avenue and 37th Street to the west.

The NCOs for Sector D are
  • Police Officer Viviane Perrone (phone: (917) 863-5169, e-mail: viviane.perrone @ nypd.org)
  • Police Officer Karol Smiarowski (phone: (917) 826-6569, e-mail: karol.smiarowski @ nypd.org.

The officers will update the community about public safety issues in the neighborhood.

Ask questions and express your concerns, complaints, and suggestions about assaults and robberies on the street, home burglaries, packages stolen from porches and lobbies, street safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, and any other issues that you have.

STREET CLOSINGS ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY FOR ROAD WORK

These streets in Windsor Terrace and Kensington will be closed for milling this week:

Monday, November 18, 2019

  • E. 5th Street, from 19th Street to Albemarle Road
Tuesday, November 19, 2019
  • E. 4th Street, from Vanderbilt Street to Caton Avenue

Each week, a new milling and paving schedule for streets in Brooklyn is posted on the Department of Transportation's website at https://nycstreets.net/PavementWorks/Project/WeeklyResurfacingSchedule/B. Click on the listings for details about which streets will be affected. To avoid having your vehicle relocated to another street without your knowledge, check that page for the upcoming week.

Signs indicating street closings for milling and paving are supposed to be posted on the streets in advance of the work, but that isn't always done.

From the DOT website:
Milling is the process of grinding off the top layer of asphalt or surface of a roadway. This is usually done in preparation for paving, although there are exceptions where no milling or only partial milling is needed.

Resurfacing is the process of placing an asphalt overlay on a roadway, whether or not it has been milled.

The milling process is noisy and may cause discomfort in the affected neighborhood for several days. Much of the work is done at night in order to minimize disruptions to traffic.

Although DOT takes steps to minimize the inconvenience, milling requires trucks, special machinery and portable lights. To minimize disruption, machinery is fitted with noise reduction equipment and crews attempt to keep noise to a minimum.

Schedules are subject to change due to inclement weather or emergencies.

BRING YOUR LEAVES TO THE COMMUNITY GARDEN FOR COMPOSTING

Rake up your fallen leaves and donate them to the East Fourth Street Community Garden's Fall Leaf Drive this Sunday, November 17th, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The leaves will be mulched, and they'll be used in the garden's compost operation. Leaves are valuable "browns" (carbon-rich material) that balance the food scraps in compost bins.

Just bring leaves--not twigs, branches, or trash.

People of all ages are welcome. Cider and donuts will be served.
