STAYING ALIVE (AND UNINJURED) ON THE STREETS OF KENSINGTON: A SAFE STREETS TOWN HALL

"Together with New York State Assemblymember Robert Carroll, I'll be hosting a town hall meeting with the New York City Department of Transportation on Monday, November 18th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at P.S. 889/M.S. 890 at 510 Coney Island Avenue (between Turner and Hinckley places) to talk about all the recent crashes and focus on what more can and must be done to make Church Avenue, Coney Island Avenue, Ocean Parkway, and all our streets safer.

The latest changes at Church Avenue and Ocean Parkway which were recently implemented after over a year of conversation don't appear to have made much difference.

I expect the Department of Transportation to discuss the changes at Church Avenue and Ocean Parkway, steps they are taking at Church and Coney Island avenues, and to listen to the community about what needs to be done to make Coney Island Avenue a safer place for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. 

I'll also give an update on the Reckless Driver Accountability Act. By the November 18th town hall, I expect to have some progress to report (and expect to be held accountable if I don't)."

EXPRESS YOUR CONCERNS ABOUT CRIME AT THE 72ND PRECINCT PUBLIC MEETING FOR WINDSOR TERRACE AND SUNSET PARK

                  72nd Precinct Community Council Public Meeting
                   Tuesday, November 12th, 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This month's meeting of the 72nd Precinct Community Council will be in Windsor Terrace. Normally, it meets in Sunset Park, so let's take advantage of it coming to our neighborhood.

Residents of Windsor Terrace and Sunset Park will get together with police officers to discuss past crimes and what the precinct is doing to prevent future crime at the 72nd Precinct Community Council's monthly meeting. Learn what types of crime have been taking place, their frequency, why they happen, and how to prevent them.

The public is invited to voice its concerns about criminal activity: armed robberies, rape and other forms of sexual assaults, home break-ins, burglaries in local stores, bank robberies, drivers who are speeding or breaking other laws, stolen bicycles, package theft, and any other crimes.

HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH: THE INTERSECTION OF BEVERLEY ROAD AND E. 2ND STREET

Car drivers and truck drivers are injuring and killing pedestrians and bicyclists on a regular basis in Kensington and Windsor Terrace. We have to be vigilant about our own safety, of course, but we also need our elected officials, our community boards, the NYPD, and the Department of Transportation to protect us.

One example of their failure to do that is the intersection of Beverley Road and E. 2nd Street. After conducting a traffic study there in 2013, the Department of Transportation determined that no traffic-calming measures were needed. They were wrong.

Neighbor Shermin Shakiri has created a petition about that intersection: "SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AT E2 STREET & BEVERLEY ROAD." It's posted at https://www.change.org/p/mayor-bill-de-blasio-safety-precautions-at-e2-street-beverley-road.

A car hit Shermin's mother there. A driver on Beverley Road turned right onto E. 2nd Street too quickly and hit a parked car. That car hit another car, which hit another car, and so on. One of the parked cars ended up on the sidewalk where Shermin's mother was standing and caused serious injuries.

My name is Shermin Shakiri and I was born on November 28, 1982 and lived at the corner of E2 Street and Avenue C at the time. I live on E2 and Beverley Road my entire life.

I have been reporting the dangerous corner of Beverley Road and E 2 Street for many years to the City. My mother was a pedestrian struck by a vehicle there in 2011 and my brother-in-law was a pedestrian struck there in 2017 requiring surgical procedure.

There is no stop sign, NOR a painted crosswalk for pedestrians. Cars that drive down Beverley mostly speed on that curve and are going to result in a deadly accident one day (GOD FORBID).

I am going to start a petition for a stop sign and painted crosswalk as well as 2 speedbumps on that curve. THIS HAS URGENCY. I hope that all my fellow neighbors see this as a huge safety threat and help in me trying to obtain the attention of the CITY & DOT.

Latin, Flamenco, and classical guitarist Tomas Rodriguez will be accompanied by Grammy-nominated percussionist Urbano Sanchez. They'll play music from Spain, Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, West Africa, and more.

Through his original compositions and interpretations of other works, Mr. Rodriguez seeks to define a new sound for the Spanish guitar that includes explorations of African rhythms as well as lesser-known pieces in Latin American and Spanish guitar repertoire.

PS 130 PTA to Hold Fifth Annual Used Book Sale

Brooklyn, NY – The PS 130 PTA is holding its Fifth Annual Book Sale on Sunday, October 20, 2019, from 10 am to 2 pm at the PS 130 Lower School, located at 70 Ocean Parkway.

The Book Sale is open to the public and will feature a huge array of books for babies, children, and adults. All books are $2 or less.

The PTA welcomes donations of gently used books in good condition from the community. They can be dropped off at the back door of 70 Ocean Parkway (entrance on East 5th Street) on Saturday, October 19, between 9am and 12pm. We are sorry, but no donations can be accepted on the day of the sale. Donations are tax deductible.

"This event is a wonderful way for the community to support PS 130, and for PS 130 to support the community," said PS 130 PTA Vice President of Fundraising Lisa Jackson Zelznick. "By allowing neighbors to donate books that we sell at a very reasonable price, we are promoting reading, literacy, and sustainability in the community while also raising funds to support important PTA initiatives, like professional development, direct support to classroom teachers, and improving the school library.”

All funds raised will be used to support the PS 130 PTA. Baked goods, drinks, and assorted snacks will be available for purchase.

OPPOSITION TO PROPOSED JAILS: PRESS CONFERENCE IN KENSINGTON

Press Conference to Oppose New Jails

A press conference to demonstrate immigrant opposition to the new jails will take place this Friday, October 11th, at 2:30 p.m., at Avenue C Plaza, located at the intersection of Avenue C and McDonald Avenue in Kensington.

A message from DRUM (Desis Rising Up and Moving):

As many of us know, Rikers Island is inhumane and a torture chamber for thousands of people. After many years of organizing by impacted communities, Rikers was supposed to close. Yet, Mayor de Blasio and New York City Council is pushing a $10 Billion Rikers expansion plan to build 4 borough based jails. They claim this plan will allow them to close Rikers.

However, the plan does not legally guarantee Rikers will close. The only guarantee is that there will be 4 New Rikers and 4 new opportunities that lead to increased policing and criminalization, which lead to more imprisonment for communities of color, and increased detentions and deportations for immigrants.

Join us as immigrant communities to say NO to 4 New Rikers and demand the investment of the $10 Billion into our communities to build community mental health centers, build more schools to reduce overcrowding, improve public housing, fix our subways, build real housing for homeless New Yorkers, and jobs programs. These are investments we need in our communities to thrive and prevent people from being incarcerated in the first place.

We cannot claim to be a sanctuary city, demand Abolish ICE and end concentration camps and allow for the building of 4 New Rikers. We are pushing City Council to vote NO on building 4 new Rikers and reinvest money into our communities.
