COOLING CENTERS ARE OPEN BECAUSE OF HIGH TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY
A heat advisory is in effect for New York City through Thursday, August 22nd, at 8:00 p.m.
Cooling centers are open in all five boroughs today and will also be open tomorrow--Thursday, August 22nd. The National Weather Service has issued the heat advisory for New York City. High heat and humidity are in the forecast, with heat index values in the mid-90s.
A severe thunderstorm watch is also in effect. This afternoon may bring thunderstorms, with some possibly severe. Heavy rainfall and damaging winds are possible.
In addition, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for New York City on August 22nd from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
You can stay informed by following @NotifyNYC on Twitter or visiting NYC.gov/NotifyNYC.
New York City's cooling centers are air-conditioned facilities, such as libraries, community centers, and senior centers. They're open to the public during heat emergencies.
To find a cooling center, including accessible facilities closest to you, call 311 (212-639-9675 for Video Relay Service, or TTY: 212-504-4115) or visit the NYC Cooling Center Finder at NYC.gov/beattheheat.
Don't leave pets or children in a car. Temperatures rise quickly--even with the windows down--and can be deadly. Call 911 if you see a pet or child in a hot vehicle.

The National Association of Town Watch introduced National Night Out--America's Night Out Against Crime--in 1984. The night's goals are to
- heighten crime and drug prevention awareness,
- generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts,
- strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and
- send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
In the 1970s, in a grass-roots movement that preceded the creation of National Night Out Against Crime, people in several communities participated in an effort to deter crime by turning on their porch lights, sitting outside, and talking with their neighbors.
