TRASH COLLECTION RESUMES THURSDAY

The Department of Sanitation will start collecting trash and recyclables on Thursday, January 28th. Starting tonight (Wednesday), place your trash and recyclables at curbside, following your normal collection schedule. Because of the backlog in trash collection and ongoing snow operations, expect some delays in collection.

Make sure that Sanitation Department employees can easily get to your trash by clearing any snow surrounding it.

LIBRARY NEEDS FACEBOOK LIKES FOR A CHILDREN'S LITERARY GARDEN

If enough people click "Like," the Windsor Terrace Library could get funding from BKLYN Incubator to create a Children's Literary Garden.

BKLYN Incubator is going to provide money to a Brooklyn Public Library branch for a new community program. Help the Windsor Terrace Library's program win the money by clicking "Like" and commenting by Wednesday, February 3rd.

A description of the Windsor Terrace Library's program:

"The inspiration for this program comes from literature. We hope to plant a love of reading. From Greek myths to Shakespeare to Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, plants have always played an important role in works of literature.
The goal of the program is to create a children’s literary garden that is filled with flowers and plants mentioned in works of literature. The Children’s Literary Garden is a program that incorporates plant care and reading."

The Windsor Terrace Library will partner with GreenWorks Team for this project.

HEALTH WARNING ABOUT DOLE PACKAGED SALADS

Dole Salad Company has informed Foodtown that it is voluntarily withdrawing from the market all Dole-branded packaged salads, which are sold in the produce department of Foodtown and other supermarkets.

This withdrawal is being performed voluntarily by Dole in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control.

A multistate outbreak of listeriosis has been linked to packaged salads produced at the Springfield, Ohio, Dole processing facility. Listeria can cause a serious, life-threatening illness.

These packaged salads were sold under various brand names: Dole, Fresh Selections, Simple Truth, Marketside, The Little Salad Bar, and President's Choice. The packaged salads can be identified by the letter "A" at the beginning of the manufacturing code found on the package.

Twelve people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria have been reported from six states since July 5, 2015, including New York. Twelve were hospitalized, and one died as a result of listeriosis.

See more about this withdrawal at http://www.cdc.gov/listeria/outbreaks.

SHELTER CAN NOW ACCEPT MORE DONATED ITEMS

The family shelter across the street from Foodtown can now accept donations of the items that its families need the most. The items should be new or in like-new condition.

To find out which types of items are needed and the times that you can drop them off at the shelter, send an e-mail to Catherine and Tracy at givemeshelterBK @ gmail.com.

Catherine and Tracy are neighborhood residents who have been doing a beautiful job of coordinating this and other efforts to lend a helping hand to the people who are currently living in the shelter.

At Christmas, neighborhood residents prepared and served dinner to the families in the shelter. This activity will take place again on Valentine's Day. Write to Tracy and Catherine at givemeshelterBK @ gmail.com, and they'll tell you how you can help with this.

People are needed to pop popcorn for the families to enjoy during the weekly movie screenings that will start soon. Write to Catherine and Tracy at givemeshelterBK @ gmail.com for more information.

If you or someone you know has a particular skill or talent or ability to share with children and/or adults, contact Tracy and Catherine at givemeshelterBK @ gmail.com.

Financial donations are also being accepted. They're tax-deductible. Details about donating are available from Catherine and Tracy at givemeshelterBK @ gmail.com.

Help is much appreciated.

HELP PLAN THE NEW PLAZA AT MCDONALD AND AVENUE C

Avenue C Plaza Planning Meeting
Thursday, January 14th
6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A second pedestrian plaza is in the works for Kensington; this one will be at the intersection of McDonald Avenue and Avenue C. Everyone interested in learning about what has been accomplished so far as well as helping to plan the plaza is invited to the next meeting of the Kensington Stewards at the Windsor Terrace Library.

Some of the features of the plaza would be movable tables and chairs, umbrellas, planters, and a granite block.

The proposed plaza is a joint project of the Kensington Stewards and the Neighborhood Plaza Partnership (NPP), who would work together to manage the plaza and keep it clean.

The Kensington Stewards
The Kensington Stewards is a group of volunteers who live in Kensington and Windsor Terrace that got together a few years ago to work on community beautification and quality-of-life projects: creating Kensington Plaza, protecting trees on Church Avenue with metal tree guards, planting daffodils and other flowers around the trees, and holding community "sidewalk clean-up days."

Neighborhood Plaza Partnership (NPP)

Neighborhood Plaza Partnership is a program of The Horticultural Society of New York that is working with The Kensington Stewards. With their professional guidance, the proposed plaza would be clean, green, and well-managed.

For more information, contact Dorothy Le of the Neighborhood Plaza Partnership at dle @ thehort.org or (212) 757-0915, x. 125.

PROPOSALS WILL BE MADE TO SOLVE EXISTING PEDESTRIAN SAFETY ISSUES AT TERRACE AND ON 11TH AVENUE

Terrace Place Pedestrian Safety Improvements
Tuesday, January 12th, 6:30 p.m.

Plans are afoot for increasing pedestrian safety where Terrace Place, Windsor Place, and Prospect Park Southwest intersect and on 11th Avenue between McDonald Avenue and 19th Street.

Proposals for the existing problems on these streets include the marking of lanes, shortening the length of street crossings, adding crosswalks, and adding a turn to the traffic signal phasing.

The New York City Department of Transportation will present its proposals at a regular meeting of Community Board 7's Transportation Committee on Tuesday, January 12th, at 6:30 p.m.

The meeting is open to the public.

View a PDF of the DOT's proposal here.

NEW TRAFFIC LIGHT FOR CATON AVENUE

A traffic light will be placed at the intersection of Caton Avenue and E. 8th Street, on the east and southeast segment of E. 8th, now that a Department of Transportation (DOT) study has confirmed its necessity.

Keith Bray, Brooklyn Borough Commissioner for the DOT, has told Community Board 7 that installation is tentatively scheduled to be completed by April 30th. Curb extensions and pedestrian refuge islands have already been installed at that intersection.

Caton at E. 8th is near a public school. It's on a local truck route, and it's between two other heavily-traveled roads--Ocean Parkway (two blocks away) and Coney Island Avenue (one block).

Another traffic light was recently installed next to a public school--this one housed in the former Bishop Ford High School--where the Prospect Expressway exits onto 10th Avenue at 19th Street.

A traffic light will also be installed in February at Windsor Place and 8th Avenue, by the Bishop Boardman Apartments (senior housing). This also resulted from a request to the DOT to study the intersection.

These safety improvements and others are the result of residents' demands for traffic safety, followed by working with elected officials and the DOT on specific needs.

Let's keep pushing for traffic safety in Kensington and Windsor Terrace. Join forces with other people who are interested in traffic safety by signing up for the Facebook group KWT Safe Streets and liking the Facebook page Windsor Terrace Safety.
