KENSINGTON PLAZA'S GRAND OPENING THIS SUNDAY

From City Councilmember Brad Lander...a press release announcing the official opening of Kensington Plaza
Please join me for a ribbon-cutting for the new “Kensington Plaza” – this Sunday, June 3rd, at 12:30 pm at the intersection of Church Avenue and Beverley Road (in front of Walgreens). This new (albeit small!) public space will add to civic life in Kensington and I am excited to celebrate it with you and your neighbors on Sunday.

The idea for creating a small plaza on the recently-extended sidewalk came from Kensington residents who wanted to address the neighborhood’s lack of open space. In response, my office worked with community members and a number of City agencies on a plan to add a few trees, benches, and granite blocks – to turn this into a small space where people can sit for a few minutes, to enjoy an ice cream, coffee, or conversation.

In February, Kensington residents, local civic groups, and representatives from City agencies came together at PS 230 to talk about what the plaza would look like, and also to address concerns. I have continued to have conversations with community residents after the meeting and have worked hard with the appropriate City agencies to make Kensington Plaza the community space you want. I am happy to report that:
  • The NYC Parks Department has planted three additional trees at the plaza.
  • NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) will install four new benches and two new granite blocks by the end of this week.
  • In response to concerns about the intersection, DOT painted a high visibility crosswalk over Beverley Road.
  • A new volunteer “stewardship group” has formed to help keep the plaza clean. In addition to regularly picking up garbage, sweeping the space, and helping care for the trees, the group is interested in promoting small community activities at the plaza to encourage community use of the space.
  • The NYPD 66th Precinct has committed to focus on the plaza with attention from the neighborhood beat cop and other officers.
  • The Department of Sanitation has committed to work with nearby property owners so that they do not get unfairly fined.
  • The NYPD 66th Precinct has also begun removing graffiti in the area, starting with locations identified by neighbors near Beverley Road.
Working together, I am hopeful that Kensington Plaza will be a space that community members take pride in, a place where we can meet each other and socialize, and a unique feature that supports what makes Kensington – and New York City – a great place to live.

I would like to thank the West Kensington Action Group and the Albemarle Neighborhood Association for their support, and the NYC Department of Transportation, NYC Department of Sanitation, and NYPD 66th Precinct for helping to make Kensington Plaza a reality.

And, most importantly, I would like to give special thanks to the Kensington Plaza Stewardship Group for contributing their time, energy, and enthusiasm. If you have questions or concerns, or you would like to become involved with the Stewardship Group, please contact my District Director, Catherine Zinnel, at 718-499-1090 or czinnel@council.nyc.gov.

I look forward to seeing you at Kensington Plaza on Sunday, and in the future.

SAFE SLOPE'S TIPS ON STAYING SAFE

Attention Neighbors:

Early Wednesday morning (May 23rd), there was an attempted assault on 16th Street (between 4th and 5th Avenues). This incident is part of a larger pattern of violence in our community. Fortunately, neighbors were willing to help.

What you can do to help prevent violence
Intervening shouldn't compromise your safety. If you see or hear harassment, assault, or any other forms of violence happening, remember you have lots of options:
  • Ask for help (alert others in the area, call 911)
  • Create a distraction by spilling your drink or yelling
  • Check in with the victim directly if there are safety concerns
What you can do if you are concerned about your personal safety
While a victim of assault is never at fault, there are a few things anyone can do to reduce their risk:
  • Try and be aware of your surroundings
  • Try to walk with a friend
  • If possible, walk in well lit areas
  • Don’t wear headphones while walking or jogging
  • If possible, walk in areas where there is a lot of foot traffic or establishments open late at night so you have a safe place to get help
  • Avoid passing too close to big bushes, dark doorways, or alleys
What you can do if you don’t feel safe traveling at night
There are services that can help you:
  • Safe Slope volunteers offer Safe Walks to women and LGBTQ folks in South Slope, Windsor Terrace, and Sunset Park on Thursdays (8:00pm-1:00am); Fridays and Saturdays (8:00pm-3:00am). Please send us an email (safeslope @ gmail.com), text us (347-709-8852), or leave us a voicemail (347-709-8852) by 6:00pm of the night you need a walk to request a walk. Please go to www.safeslope.org for more details.
  • RightRides offers free, safe, late-night rides home citywide to women, LGBTQ and genderqueer individuals on Friday and Saturday nights (midnight-3:00AM). Call(718) 964-7781or (888)215-SAFE (7233).
  • Brooklyn Bike Patrol offers walks home to women in many Brooklyn neighborhoods on Sunday-Thursday (8:00pm-midnight) and Friday-Saturday(8:00pm-3:00am). Call 718-744-7592 or email rocket55j @ aol.com or brooklynbikepatrol @ gmail.com.
  • visit http://www.safeslope.org for a list of additional resources. Please email Safe Slope (safeslope @ gmail.com ) if you are interested in volunteering with us.

MORE DETAILS ON THE 16TH STREET GROPING

A twenty-two-year-old woman was groped on 16th Street between 5th and 4th avenues on Thursday morning. Returning home from work, she exited the 4th Avenue/9th Street F/G station at 5:03 a.m. and was walking on 16th Street when a man approached her from behind and put his hands under her skirt. She had noticed him prior to that, but she thought she had eluded him.

The woman screamed loudly, and a neighbor heard her. A second neighbor chased the attacker, grabbed him at Prospect Avenue and 3rd Avenue, and held on to him. When the police arrived, they wrote down information about the suspect and released him fifteen minutes later because they didn't have a victim. She had left the crime scene.

The police then left. They returned to the neighborhood later that day to question neighbors and check security cameras.

Police have released three videos of the suspected attacker, who was wearing a red baseball cap and camouflage pants and was carrying a shoulder bag crossed against his chest.. He is in his 40s, about 140 pounds, 5 feet and 4 four inches tall, and Hispanic.

The Brooklyn Paper says that the "Two officers involved in the incident have been placed on modified duty pending an investigation."

Anyone with information in regards to this case is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website  at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577.

ATTEMPTED RAPE IN SUNSET PARK YESTERDAY (THURSDAY)

In Sunset Park yesterday (Thursday) morning, a man knocked on a door, went into a woman's home after she opened the door, and tried to rape her. A member of  the intended victim's family intervened, and the attacker fled. The attacker is Hispanic, in his 40s, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and about 170 pounds.

News 12 has an extremely clear video of the attack.

The New York Post reports that the assault took place in Sunset Park on 49th Street at 3:00 a.m.

The intended victim is 57 years old, according to NY 1

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted online.

THESE ARE THE SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS

Assemblymember Dov Hikind shows one of the 150 high-tech security cameras that will be purchased for the Leiby Kletzky Security Initiative. The four-lens cameras will be purchased with a grant from the New York State Senate and placed in Borough Park, Midwood, and "all the way to Manhattan Beach."

The goal of the pilot program is to protect children and adults and, in the case of Jewish neighborhoods, protect communities that are subject to anti-Semitic activities.

On the map shown in the videos, the red dots represent the planned locations of the cameras, including outside such sites as major schools and synagogues as well as at thoroughfares.

Nachman Kletzky, father of murdered eight-year-old Leiby Kletzky, was present in his first public appearance ever, although he did not speak.

FEELING QUEASY FOR SEAN CASEY ANIMAL RESCUE

To celebrate the 85th anniversary of the opening of the Cyclone roller coaster, Luna Park at Coney Island will host its "Cyclone Roller Coaster 1st Annual Charity Coasterthon" on Saturday, June 9th. Our neighborhood's very own Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR) is one of only twelve non-profit organizations that were chosen to participate in this fund raising event.

Two lucky (unlucky?) representatives from each organization will have the opportunity to try not to lose their lunch while riding the roller coaster for ten hours, from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Support SCAR by donating to the riders for each cycle they complete (for example, you can donate $2 per ride or $3 per ride--or any other amount) or by donating a flat fee via PayPal by June 16th.

In addition to the money raised that way, Luna Park will donate $24,000 to the organization whose riders keep riding for ten hours.

Cheer Sean Casey Animal Rescue on in person while enjoying food, music, and other festivities. SCAR will have a booth with adoptable pets and will be selling t-shirts.

Memorial Day Rededication of Col. Donald Cook Square

Donald Cook (1934-1967) grew up at 107 E. 2nd Street, between Fort Hamilton Parkway and Greenwood Avenue.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1956. In 1964, during the Vietnam War, he was assigned to Saigon. Three weeks after arriving, he volunteered to lead a search for a downed helicopter. The enemy attacked, and he was shot, captured, and held as a prisoner of war for three years.

Throughout his imprisonment, his conduct was heroic, selfless, and beyond reproach, and for that he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

The enemy reported him dead on December 8, 1967. His body has not been recovered.

ATTACK BY A GROPER TODAY

Dozens of women were groped in the streets and subway stations of Kensington, Windsor Terrace, Park Slope, Greenwood Heights, Sunset Park, and Bay Ridge from May 2010 through January 2012. Today, the following post on EveryBlock today by Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Heights indicates that the problem, after either stopping for a few months or occurring but not being reported, has returned:
"I am reporting this through a 3rd party, but I felt is was important to alert the news groups. The person I spoke to, who will remain anonymous for now, gave me the following information:
This morning at 5am 5/23/12, on 16th Street, btwn 4th/5th Aves (south side) there was another attempted sexual assault by a male Hispanic on a young Caucasian female. When the victim screamed and neighbors came out of their homes, the attacker fled.

The victim and several witnesses called 911.

One neighbor chased the attacker to 4th Avenue and held him until the 72nd Pct. arrived.

The police offers [officers] who responded let the attacker go and would not take a report from the witnesses. The officers made little or no attempt to talk to the victim.

So now we have a scared victim (in hiding) and neighbors contacting me to give their report anonymously, as they fear the 72nd Pct.

Fortunately there are two witnesses, one of which saw the attack last spring on 16th St, who will talk to the 72nd Pct. When/if I get that info, I will make it available.

i have asked the witness who called me to call CB7 and file a formal complaint.

We'll take it from there. While I do not have all the facts, I am appalled that the 72nd Pct. would handle the situation in such a manner, but I am not surprised. Which is very sad.

I should be reporting via CB7 with the Pct. reporting to CB7, not the other way around.

More info to the newsgroups when i hear more."

MORE ABOUT THE LEIBY KLETZKY SECURITY INITIATIVE

The high-tech surveillance cameras that will be put in Borough Park and Midwood through the Leiby Kletzky Security Initiative will be located outside of businesses, synagogues, and schools in predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods. The program could be in place within two months or sometime in the fall.

This pilot program is funded by a a $1 million New York state grant sponsored by State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos. The grant will be given to Agudath Israel to purchase the cameras and administer the program. Law enforcement officials will be able to view footage. It's likely that Shomrim also will.

The area to be covered, writes Assemblymember Dov Hikind, will be bounded by "60th Street to McDonald Avenue, 9th Avenue to 20th Avenue in Borough Park, McDonald Avenue to Ocean Avenue, and Foster Avenue to Avenue U in Midwood."

He adds that "Surveillance cameras will be mounted at major intersections. Camera output will be accessed by private volunteer organizations and can be reviewed by authorized police officials."

66TH PRECINCT COMMUNITY COUNCIL NOTES, MAY 2012

At last night’s 66th Precinct Community Council meeting, Deputy Inspector Michael Deddo Jr. announced that robberies had dropped 17% since the Council’s last meeting in Aprilwhen he took commandand burglary was down 43%. Nonetheless, he pointed out, that represents 16 people whose homes were burglarized. Kensington led the precinct in crime reduction last month, with a drop of 34%.

An ongoing problem, he said, is grand larceny—credit card or identity theft—where stats are up. The Cop of the Month, Officer Anthony Carreira, captured two perpetrators of identity theft who were able to cash a check for $4,500 using phony identification. This was Officer Carreira’s fourth Cop of the Month award.

Deputy Inspector Deddo introduced 13 florists who work within the precinct's boundaries. They had asked for the precinct’s help in curtailing the blossoming of illegal street flower vendors, and he had invited them to present their case at the meeting. The illegal vendors, the florists’ spokesperson said, cannot do arrangements, don't handle weddings or bar mitzvahs, and don’t pay taxes.

The traffic jams on Coney Island Avenue were on his mind. The precinct conducted two operations there and expects to send out more.

When asked if the Community Council could sometimes meet in Kensington, he explained that the meeting doesn't rotate and that the current location is central. He said that if there is a neighborhood association in Kensington, he would be willing to speak there.
