HAMILTON'S' OUTDOOR SEATING IS GONE

the past

the present

Hamilton's' outdoor tables and chairs have been folded up: owners Georgia and Kevin Read have had to discontinue offering outdoor seating to their customers.

A restaurant that "operates a portion of a restaurant on a public sidewalk," as Hamilton's did, is required to have a sidewalk café license. The New York City Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) has been enforcing this rule more frequently lately.

DCA applies the rule to all sidewalk cafés, enclosed and unenclosed alike. An unenclosed sidewalk café is "an outdoor area on the public sidewalk in front of the restaurant that contains removable tables and chairs."

To be licensed, a restaurant must meet a bucketload of requirements. To name just two, the street must be zoned for sidewalk cafés (including the specific type of café), and at least twelve feet of sidewalk must be left available for pedestrians.

If you want to see how overwhelming the process is to apply for a license, take a look at this DCA page. The fees are pretty staggering too.

Until Hamilton's customers can again sit outdoors while they enjoy their meal, luckily, the inside of Hamilton's is attractive, and the food tastes good indoors too!

Monday, March 11th, to Thursday, March 21st

Two Windsor Terrace restaurants--Le P'tit Paris Bistro and Hamilton's--are among the approximately 200 throughout Brooklyn that will offer big savings on three-course brunches, lunches, and dinners during the eleven days of "Dine in Brooklyn." The locations of all of the participating restaurants have been mapped.

The fixed prices for the meals are
  • Brunch: 2 for $20.13

  • Dinner:  1 for $28.00

Not every restaurant will serve all three meals at the "Dine in Brooklyn" price. Hamilton's will offer it for dinner, and Le P'tit Paris Bistro will offer it for brunch, lunch, and dinner.

MY DINNER AT HAMILTON'S; MENU

A friend and I ate dinner at Hamilton's last night on its opening night. We got there at 7:15. The place was full--every table and every space at the bar was occupied.

My friend suggested three items from the menu for us to order. Which means I tried a few foods that were new to me. We shared Brussels, Farro Salad, and Kimchi Fried Rice and Organic Egg. I'd never had queso fresco, farro, or kimchi before.

My "official" review:
Brussels: delicious.
Farro Salad: scrumptious.
Kimchi Fried Rice and Organic Egg: fabulous.

Our waitperson, Chrissy, brought us our meal quickly. She was efficient, and she was pleasant. The whole experience was enjoyable.

Hours: 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Temporarily closed on Mondays. Open on Mondays beginning October 29th.

HAMILTON'S SETS OPENING DATE

co-owner Kevin Read

The interior. (not blurry in real life.)

The bar (also not blurry in real life!)

Thursday, October 11th--that's the date scheduled for the opening of Hamilton's, a restaurant and bar, on the corner of Fort Hamilton Parkway and E. 4th Street. The time: 5:00 p.m.

Owners Georgia and Kevin Read describe Hamilton's as "a casual, neighborhood restaurant with 20 tap beers and wine. An internationally inspired menu created by Joseph Bayley (formerly of Littleneck and Boqueria)." Joseph was the sous chef--the second in authority, right below the head chef--at Boqueria and also at Cobblestone. He was a winner on "Chopped."

The Reads are still hiring servers and bussers (see their ad on craigslist), and they're also hiring bartenders. Anyone interested in any of those jobs should send them an e-mail at hamiltonbkny @ gmail.com. Experience is a necessity.
